Two of my entries also had the same fate: Phoenix's 1901 DNQ'd before it got particularly big and Inspector Norse DNQ'd when it rly did end up seeming like the earworm of 2012-14. Idk what they did in terms of charts but they ended up feeling ubiquitous for a long time.

Madness, but yeah I guess that's what happens if you dont vote
Surprised that Video Games hasn’t been mentioned yet, that has to be one of the biggest

Wasn’t Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know sent before it’s release in the UK? Icr.

Also: Keri Hilson - Knock You Down came 10th and then went top 5 a few months later *.*

It was in BJSC 124

Spreadsheet's here

(plus it only DNQ'd by virtue of non-voting so I guess that's a great "what could've been" counterfactual of BJSC history!)

Of course that's one of the few contests I missed! I definitely would have been giving top points to PPP there

surely Pink Pony Club is in this list?

oh wait that is the song… damn we really fumbled that huh

It didnt even make the final and I didnt get to hear it as I was in t'other semi, so I remain blame-free :teresa:

Lourdes.

Not big hits, but cult monsters like Run Boy Run, and yes I'm going to plug a Singerpurear semi flop (again) In Hell I'll Be In Good Company, The Dead South the video currently on 433 million views and they were on UK TV New Years Eve, it popped up in Umbrella Academy and been touring globally ever since. I'm taking that as a hit. :D

Several of my entries did:

Sara Bareilles - Love Song (sent in 2008, came 1st - UK No.4 hit a few months later)

Pixie Lott - Boys and Girls (sent in 2008, came 3rd - UK No.1 hit in 2009)

Hozier - Take Me To Church (sent in 2013, came 11th - huge UK No.2 hit in 2014/2015)

Walk The Moon - Shut Up And Dance (sent in 2014, came 4th, huge UK No.4 hit in 2015)

Freya Ridings - Lost Without You (sent in 2018, came 2nd (tied on points with the winner), big No.9 hit later that year unexpectedly)

Oh gosh so you’re to blame for “Shut Up + Dance”?!

The others are great though and a pretty impressive hit list all in all.

Afraid so!

I believe they had been sent before by Chez - Anna Sun didn't qualify for the final. But Shut Up & Dance felt like a surprising poppy swerve for them so I thought I'd give it a go as it sounded quite catchy with a big chorus - I just didn't realise 2 billion streams catchy.

As an aside, I remain blameless for Pink Pony Club's failure - I was in its semi and gave it nearly maximum points! And was gutted the person that sent it didn't vote. I can only recommend always checking out the DNQs from the other semi, usually it's only another 10 songs of your time and you never know what you might miss if you don't.

Absolutely this, one of my fave entries ever is Dr Peacock - Trip To Ireland which was an opposite semi DNQ (admittedly on this occasion I remember listening to it before the results had been announced) but there are certainly some contests where I've not listened to the 10 or so DNQs from the other semi and you never know what might end up blossoming into an all time fave discovery. I think I got lucky once with a DNQ I missed doing well in the Rejects contest that year* so I had a second chance to hear it but obviously these side-contests don't run anymore.

*Edit: I was struggling to remember what that was other than it being a Quintessa entry so for peace of mind went and found out it was Woolf And The Wondershow - Cages
