Biography

Nobody makes feeling bad sound as good as The Weeknd. Even the singer’s sunniest tracks (“Can’t Feel My Face”, “Starboy”) feel anchored by darkness—the sense that pleasure is pain and beauty decays and you can’t have the night without the morning after. The brainchild of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, the project took off in 2011 with a string of mixtapes (later collected as 2012’s Trilogy) that forged cavernous, falsetto-driven R&B with narratives drenched in drugs, sex and other regrettable decisions—a sound both sensuous and detached, featherlight and dead heavy. One of the earliest musicians to find his footing on the internet, Tesfaye originally offered his music through YouTube and free downloads, a move that felt radical then but is common now. Ethiopian by heritage (his parents immigrated to Canada in the late ’80s, just before he was born), Tesfaye—out from behind the mask of making art online—has since come to represent the changing face of Toronto, rooting himself not just in an international musical community but in a specific diasporic experience. Tesfaye’s music has become a symbol of hedonism pushed to bleak excess, with a series of albums—including 2015’s Grammy-winning Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s multiplatinum Starboy and 2020’s dense and atmospheric After Hours—whose narrators can’t seem to say no even if they hate themselves for it later. And though his music has gotten a little brighter over time, the prevailing mood remains heavy, even unsettling—the ride you want more of even when you’ve had too much. Speaking to Apple Music about the persona behind his songs, Tesfaye said, “I’m a chill person. That guy is who I am, but it is who I am to myself and in my writing. Sometimes you take him and then you create more, and then it becomes this beast. You add more to him, and then it’s uncontrollable—its own character. It’s like Scarface, the villain: It’s horrible, but you can’t stop looking at it.” Though he didn’t release a new album in 2021, he was a constant part of the cultural conversation, releasing a slew of singles, performing at the Super Bowl and on Saturday Night Live (think: “Ladies and gentlemen, The Weeknd”) and winning the Apple Music Award for Artist of the Year. Though he didn’t release a new album in 2021, he was a constant part of the cultural conversation, dropping a slew of singles, performing at the Super Bowl and on Saturday Night Live (think: “Ladies and gentlemen, The Weeknd”), and winning the Apple Music Award for Artist of the Year. After a banner 2021, he unleashed 2022’s Dawn FM, a cross-decade synth-pop exhibition for the ages. Featuring flourishes of new wave (“Gasoline”), astral rock (“Here We Go... Again”), and other genres in between, the album tightropes the retro and the modern—a singular vision curated by a singular artist. - Apple Music

Biography

Lady Gaga

Some may dismiss pop as inauthentic. But for Lady Gaga—one of popular culture’s greatest, most extravagant creations—the inauthenticity is the point. No artist has more defiantly embodied that provocation this century than the one born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (in New York in 1986). Never wedded to the same image—her most memorable looks (among many) have included a gown fashioned from raw meat, a red-carpet-appropriate pair of dish gloves, and “the world’s first flying dress”—Gaga personifies pop’s surface obsessions while simultaneously upending them. In a sense, her creative identity had crystallized by age 21; she’d been a child pianist, aspiring actor, and burlesque performer. Each of these facets powered her career’s most distinct parts: the celebrity fascination of her first two albums, 2008’s The Fame and 2009’s The Fame Monster; the subversive layering of 2011’s Born This Way and 2013’s ARTPOP; the sincere reverence of 2014’s Cheek to Cheek, her jazz standards album with Tony Bennett; the rootsier songwriting of 2016’s Joanne; and 2020’s jubilant return to her neon-hued electro roots, Chromatica. If the 2009 smash “Paparazzi” reveled in the flashes, then “Born This Way” celebrated inner light: In translating her diffuse identity into world-conquering art, Gaga has become a beacon to anyone else who’s felt like an outsider. Her loyal following of Little Monsters has affirmed a deep connection to her message of self-love and self-expression, despite pop’s fickleness and her chameleonic exterior. She played out a simpler version of her path to fame in the Oscar-worthy 2018 remake of A Star Is Born. But while her character’s ascent was abetted by her lover, Gaga’s was all her own. - Apple Music

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars has a good story about Prince: Mars is hanging out at an awards show, during a commercial break. The crowd is filled with celebrities. Suddenly, Mars feels the room shift, people part, and there he is, Mars told Apple Music in a 2016 interview—Prince, “just floating by, levitating by.” Prince catches Mars’ eye and gives him a thumbs-up, and Mars—stunned—gives Prince a thumbs-up back. “And that’s it,” Mars said. “What more can you ask?” More than a Prince cosign? How about a stack of multiplatinum records? The privilege of being able to entertain people the world over? Mars has those too. But you get the sense that the nod from Prince was affirmation of a higher order. Even when he was living on instant ramen noodles and trying to find his way into the industry, Mars knew he didn’t just want to be a songwriter or a singer or a producer, but—like Prince, or maybe Michael Jackson—a total pop package, the kind of artist who’s as powerful in the studio as they are onstage. Those records, though: “Uptown Funk,” “Locked Out of Heaven,” “That’s What I Like.” Fun, omnivorous, generation-bridging. The kind of stuff that Mom will be pulling you onto the dance floor for. Mars could do old-fashioned showmanship, could credibly play the crooner with a live band to boot. But he also had an ear for hip-hop and R&B, could—like all great pop—collapse the distance between then and now, Black music and white. Most of all, he knew how much retro was retro enough: Music that made you think about the past, not pine for it. Born Peter Hernandez in Honolulu in 1985, Mars took the stage early, famously doing Elvis impersonations with a family revue at a local hotel before he even hit kindergarten. (In one formative moment, young Mars wet his jumpsuit during “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” but finished without flinching.) As a teenager, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a deal with Motown Records. The deal went nowhere, but Mars kept himself afloat by writing and producing with a team called The Smeezingtons, which he helped found. In 2010, he released his debut, Doo-Wops & Hooligans. By 2012’s Unorthodox Jukebox, the image had gotten a little grittier, the sound a little more diverse, and the retro affectations—goodbye, pompadour—a little less pronounced. Leaning on the slick bounce of ’80s and ’90s funk and R&B, 24K Magic followed in 2016, sweeping its nominations at the Grammys. A confessed perfectionist, Mars pushes on. “All the statues or Time magazine—that s**t is beautiful and made my parents and my family proud and all that,” he told Apple Music. “But there’s this battle within—that you always wanna. You got this fighter’s spirit. I still feel like I’m chasing to prove something to myself, that I got a better song in me.” - Apple Music

Yup Chappell Roan threw me off - I'll edit it in now!

'Timeless' has really clicked for me now - that, 'Open Hearts' and 'Drive' are my favourites from The Weeknd's new album.

Biography

Jimin had spent only six months as a K-pop trainee when he debuted in BTS—the least amount of any of the band’s members. With his natural charisma and strong background in contemporary dance, Jimin was considered a shoo-in for the group, but it would be years before he would get comfortable with his vocals. After more than a decade with BTS, though, Jimin would become one of the most distinctive voices in K-pop. Born in Korea’s southern city of Busan as 박지민 (or Park Jimin) in 1995, Jimin moved to Seoul at 16 to become a trainee at Big Hit Entertainment. In 2013, he debuted alongside RM, JIN, SUGA, j-hope, V, and Jung Kook as a dancer and vocalist in 방탄소년단 (or Bangtan Sonyeondan, aka BTS). They would go on to become one of the most successful musical artists of all time. In 2016, when BTS made international waves with the single “Blood Sweat & Tears,” it was Jimin’s raspy, sensual intro that lured in many new listeners. He further cemented his reputation as a uniquely expressive performer with the release of BTS solo songs “Lie” (2016), “Serendipity” (2017), and “Filter” (2020). In 2023, during a BTS group hiatus, Jimin collaborated with Taeyang, of BIGBANG, on the R&B track “VIBE” and released a solo mini-album called FACE. A six-track record written over a period of 10 months about Jimin’s intense feelings during the initial pandemic period, FACE hit at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, with synth-pop lead single “Like Crazy” debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Co-written by Jimin, the album is about confronting one’s self in order to become a better artist. “Finally free,” he sings again and again on “Set Me Free, Pt. 2,” a self-liberation song that features Jimin rapping—a reminder that finding one’s voice is not only a continuous, lifelong process for an artist, but one that can lead in unexpected directions. - Apple Music

Biography

When singer-songwriter Billie Eilish feels something new, the first thing she does is take out her phone and write it down. “You can write anything,” she told Apple Music in an interview for the Up Next series in 2018. “You can say the truth, and you cannot tell anyone that it’s the truth—you can just write it, and it’ll be yours.” Raised and homeschooled in Los Angeles by actor/musician parents, Eilish (born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell in 2001) started writing songs when she was around 11, exploring a strain of melancholy, minimal, and slightly surrealistic pop influenced as much by Lana Del Rey as the radical honesty of rappers like Tyler, The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. Writing and recording with her brother—and producer—FINNEAS at their parents’ house, Eilish released dont smile at me in 2017, graduating directly from her bedroom to the spotlight. Hardly two years later, she’d released the Grammys-slaying WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, an experimental-pop opus exploring mental health and totally upending notions of what constitutes pop music in 2020. (She also won the inaugural Apple Music Award for Global Artist of the Year and performed an Apple Music Live session at London’s O2 Arena in 2022.) Despite the attention, Eilish has done her best to stake out a space of freedom and fluidity, dodging easy definition. Her 2021 album Happier Than Ever saw her chart a further path of self-discovery, after which 2023’s Academy Award-winning ballad “What Was I Made For?” felt downright existential and the 2024 single “LUNCH” openly radiated queer desire. For an artist who has always seemed like she’s whispering closely guarded secrets into our ears, Eilish’s songwriting only seems to be growing more personal. “This is the most ‘me’ thing I’ve ever made,” she told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about 2024’s HIT ME HARD AND SOFT. “And purely me—not a character.” - Apple Music
