FAQs

What is streaming? What are the chart rules regarding streaming?

For streaming and chart rules related FAQs read this thread.

How many streams equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread.

How much does streaming contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole. Spotify counts for at least half of this, with Apple Music and Amazon also big contributors. YouTube is also big however most of YouTube's streams are at the free tier so won't count for as much.

Why is my fave not doing well?

Is it being promoted on a major curated playlist, and/or going viral on TikTok? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists on Spotify from a UK standpoint. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped releases, such as the recent album impacts from Drake and Taylor Swift.

Spotify

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. For the full top 200, use the link below to go to Spotify's website. You can also use the Kworb website which displays the data in an easier to read format and also contains additional information, however this is often out of date.

What are the most influential Spotify playlists?

Links to Spotify's top playlists are as below.

Hot Hits UK

New Music Friday

Today's Top Hits

How often does the Spotify chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although on occasion there will be a delay.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Apple Music

How do I see today's Apple Music chart?

You can use the link below to view the Apple Music top 100 through Kworb. If you have Apple Music, you can also view the top 200 by going to the Charts section and clicking on See All in the Top Songs section.

How often does the Apple Music chart update?

I think she was dismissed from the case so "won" essentially. I'm not sure what public opinion on Lizzo is now though as it did taint her somewhat? She did a nice interview with Keke Palmer in Decembe

Always with the binaries. Her last album debuted at #2 in the US & Aus, and #6 in the UK. That's a fanbase.

5 Fontaines DC - It's amazing to be Young

no clue what this is: Selena, Benny Bianco, Gracie Abrams

but has also been added to HH

weird combo on paper...

Sam Fender has 7 songs in the top 50 on Apple Music and Tate is doing okay with her album too but apart from that not much movement. Not like us still remaining at 1 surprisingly

All Sam's album is now top 70, with 9 songs in the top 50. I'm sure he's doing well, and it's the most acclaimed album of his up until now, and the other 2 were also very much so, so that says something.

I'm sure he'll move a lot of physical also. He will do big numbers this week.

Tate also doing much better that her last album (the album s X50 better in my opinion) and have 10 songs in the top 100, and the whole album, except from the last song in the top 200, which I'm sure she will by next update.

Fontaines D.C. - 86

I honestly think Sam can do over 100k with this. Great album, will be picking up my CD later this week!
40,913 Hypersonic Missiles [33,493 Physicals (8,210 vinyl + 469 Cassettes)+ 7,420 Digital] (13th September 2019)

43,717 Seventeen Going Under [34,603 Physicals] (8th October 2021)

Very consistent sales across the board so far. I imagine very similar sales for this. Although those were in Q3/Q4. This is his first release in Q1.

Sam’s previous opening weeks. He’s definitely a bigger name now than he was then, but I think 100k is a bit too optimistic. Anything between 50k & 60k would be a great result. Considering this is his first release outside of peak period for sales usually (Q3/4) it’s gonna be interesting to see what he can do…

Q4 meansnothing anymore

I think he will do closer to 100k than 50k

Big impact from both Tate and Sam!

New Fontaines in at 18, Selena/Gracie/Benny Blanco at 37, Jennie ft. Doechii at 72, Raving In The Studio remix at 149

Looking like not like us might sneak another week though I suspect it’ll drop quite big mon/tue/wed

It's really impressive to have 2 albums have such big effects at the same time, tbh.

Sam hadn't yet even had a top 40 single when his last album came out ('Seventeen Going Under' finally went top 40 the week of the album release and then still took another couple of months before fully blowing up), would definitely expect this album to comfortably blow past the debuts of his first two. Agreed 100k might be a bit optimistic though. I'll take a stab in the dark at like 70k?

Still not used to Fontaines D.C. becoming such a streaming viable act pretty much overnight but excellent to see them in a strong position to get a first top 40 hit *.*

Kendrick's sales will obviously be down a fair bit this week but looks like there's no new contender to replace him and he's still quite comfortably ahead of Chappell on Spotify and #1 on Apple too so I think he is most likely to hang on for a second week. The bulk of the Super Bowl boost will have already worn off so not sure he'll be continuing to drop at the same rate this week? (But if he does then Chappell could sneak a week with low sales).

Nice to see All The Stars declining but I’d rather Not Like Us declined instead
