My Oh My is good even if it does sound like a much inferior version of the Real McCoy from 1994.

The original Just The Two of Us is a very nice song and Will Smith's version isn't bad but I'd rather listen to the jazzy original.

Weird to have no new entries at all in the top ten on that first week! Did a lot of songs underperform against expectation or was it just a release schedule lull for some reason? Nice that it let Stra

It's interesting that the charts slowed down a bit in 1998 in the top ten, and you can see it with some of these protracted runs for many songs. But there were some very big, classic songs released th

Also Mulder and Scully is superb - I remember this chart vividly. Woolies had it out of the top 10 So it was an unexpected hit!

I always forget about the dance cover of Mas Que Nada but it was a nice enough version. There were two more interesting and memorable dance entries in the top 20 on these two weeks though, the classic trance track Cafe Del Mar by Energy 52 and the brilliant garage cover of Teardrops by Lovestation, both of which I still play a lot.

To this day I don't understand how Energy 52 missed the top 10. It felt hugely popular in club culture at the time, everyone would go mental when it came on - plus it had been around for a while by this point so it should have built up anticipation for the release. I guess it probably didn't amass much radio play (although I don't know) so maybe that made the difference.

Cafe Del Mar is very good once it builds up its a pity it didn't make top 10. Teardrops by Lovestation also should have made top 10 its a cover of a well known soul classic.

Such a shame but maybe just timing.

Trance felt like a bigger commercial concern in 1999/2000, even Binary Finary was so much bigger with a re-release and remix the year after. 1998 dance hits still feel very cover heavy and more disco/house, whereas trance was so dominant by 1999.

Was that Catatonia song expected to reach the top ten? No.11 feels like a very close scrape to nearly give them three in a row, Cerys four.

Strange Glue is a beautiful song, wish it had snuck a top 10.

I like My Oh My but I guess it was a bit of a step down. I did expect it to be no.2 at the time behind Viva Forever.

I always wish Never Give Up On The Good Times had been on the double A side in the end.

Not too bad for My Oh My, at least it charted. It missed the top 100 in Australia from memory. Though it was the 5th single from the album here in Australia.

Saying that was t this released as the follow up to Roses Are Red in Denmark? Before Barbie Girl was released.

Love 'Cafe Del Mar'! ❤️ I suppose being instrumental may have limited its commercial appeal?

Every time I'm reminded of a Will Smith entry, I realise just how lazy he was as an 'artist'

Viva Forever is of course top tier Spice Girls.

Will Smith however is dreadful!

Agree, Viva Forever is one of their better singles.

Wow movie mania at the moment with the Godzilla-anchored Jamiroquai chart-topper, a new wave of appetite for Grease 20 years on and Peter Andre piggy-backing on the Little Mermaid re-release, all new top 10 entries during the same week.

I'm another who has a soft spot for 'Life Is A Flower'. There's something really charming about it.

'Viva Forever' is my favourite Spice Girls single wub the Latin-flavoured, symphonic production is gorgeous and I like the range of vocal choices on display, like Emma's soft start while Mel B rounds off the song with her lower register. It was magical hearing it in a live setting when I got the chance to see them at Wembley Stadium.

2/10 for Viva Forever, their worst single.

Why do you not like it? I would have thought it would be your sort of thing based upon some other group ballads you like

From Spice Girls I like only one song (The Lady Is A Vamp).

The Spice Girls prove too powerful for any challenger to come close so “Viva Forever” gets a second week at No 1 with sales depleted by a huge 59% but when your opening week was as strong as theirs even that doesn’t prove fatal. This is the 20th week that the Spice Girls have been No 1 bettered only (in the 90s) by Take That’s 21 weeks but with Boyzone released this week the 112,000 that the single sold last week is looking a vulnerable tally.

Highest new entry of the week comes from Puff Daddy and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page who charted last week on imports but with a full release “Come With Me” enters at No 2 (60,800). The track features the guitar work of Page who re-creates the riff from “Kashmir” to earn it, that song appeared on the 1975 Zeppelin album “Physical Graffiti” which was never a single in keeping with the group’s ethos. Its inclusion in the film “Godzilla” gives the movie a second hit single with Jamiroquai already having topped the charts, he moves 5-9 (27,000) this week.

The movies continue to generate the singles with Apollo 440’s “Lost In Space” new at No 4 (43,000). It serves as a dance remix of the theme from the classic 60’s show which has been remade for the big screen and stars John Hurt and Matt Le Blanc which was released last week. It becomes the biggest hit of the group’s career beating the No 7 peak of “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Dub” last year.

Remixers under a guise of names Adam Carter-Ryan and Mark Hadfield are now hitmakers in their own right under the moniker Lucid with the single “I Can’t Help Myself”. It’s a track which has been generating waves in the dance clubs for some time now and a delayed release finally results in a No 7 hit with sales of 31,000.

Pras Michel/ ODB/ Mya remain at No 3 (46,000) but Ace Of Base bounce back 7-5 (38,000) in the face of losing sales, they overtake the falling Another Level 4-6 (34,000) and Will Smith 2-8 (29,000) with Eagle Eye Cherry completing the top 10 drifting 8-10 (26,000).  We also finally hit 100 new entries in the top 10 but we're still at the slowest point since 1995 on a year on year basis.

1- VIVA FOREVER- Spice Girls (112,000)

Proving more than a rival to the Spice Girls, Boyzone’s “No Matter What” powers into the top spot to give the boys a fourth chart topper, a record for an Irish act. It sold 277,554 copies to crush the opposition and failed by just 368 copies to overtake “Viva Forever”’s opening tally as the strongest opening of the year but it does become their personal fastest seller. It is taken from the new West End musical “Whistle Down The Wind” which has already generated a No 24 hit for the title track and Tina Arena last month, and is written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with co penmanship by Jim Steinman. It becomes the third chart topper from both writers as Lloyd Webber has “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” and “Any Dream Will Do” to his credit whilst Steinman has “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” and “I’d Do Anything For Love” in the bank, and both have one additional production No 1 in “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” (Lloyd Webber) and “Never Forget” (Steinman).

For Boyzone it means a 12th top 5 single breaking the tie with Kylie Minogue for the best career start in chart history. Their album “Where We Belong” lifts 11-6 in response but doesn’t contain the single, don’t worry it will be re-issued in a few weeks with it added so save your pennies!

Poor Sash!- they seem to have the knack for releasing their singles up against the strongest chart toppers possible, their fifth single features singer Tina Cousins and arrives at a distant No 2 (72,000). Of the previous four hits three have peaked at No 2 coming up against “Don’t Speak”, “I’ll Be Missing You” and “Candle In The Wind 1997” and with a combined total of over 7 million copies between them you can see just how unlucky their hits have been. Even the odd one out “La Primavera” which made No 3 in the Spring (appropriately) was behind two million sellers in Celine Dion and Run DMC, but no matter Sash! have a chart career so far bettered only by 9 acts (in terms of opening top 5 hits), Spice Girls, Boyzone, Guy Mitchell, Engelbert Humperdink, Kylie Minogue, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, George Michael, Jason Donovan and Culture Club. “Mysterious Times” heralds Sash!’s second album “Life Goes On” out in a fortnight, sung in English it marks the first time the act have used the same language twice.  Finally, with 4 No 2 hits in the 90s only one act can boast more- yes that's Boyzone with 5.

Placebo return with a second album “Without You I’m Nothing” scheduled for the Autumn, first single “Pure Morning” gives them another No 4 single equaling their best ever achieved by “Nancy Boy” in early 1997. It couldn’t maintain its midweek No 2 position ending up with 57,000 copies sold.

David Morales is a big name as a remixer (most recently having worked over Mariah Carey’s “My All”) but he’s never had a top 20 single under his own name. No more as “Needin U” becomes an instant smash at No 8 (29,000), the song samples Chi-Lites “My First Mistake” and Rare Pleasure’s “Let Me Down Easy” and has been big in the clubs for months generating interest.

The Spice Girls duly drop 1-3 (69,000), Pras Michel/ ODB/Mya fall 3-5 (37,000) staying above Apollo 440 who are down 4-6 (34,000). Puff Daddy dips 2-7 (30,000), Ace Of Base slide 5-9 (26,000) and Another Level hold down anchor position on 23,000.

1- NO MATTER WHAT- Boyzone (277,554)
