The UK Top 40 singles of the 1980s: listening sessions + polls: next session 18 Oct

Featured Replies

Starvation - Starvation* / Tam-Tam Pour L'Ethiope*

Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World

The Damned - Grimly Fiendish

REO Speedwagon - Can't Fight This Feeling

Dream Academy - Life In A Northern Town

Have to give credit for Starvation, the first side was rubbish but it's great to see some actual African voices in a charity single. The Damned also a great discovery, Pie Jesu just missed out.

We are back at 4pm tomorrow! Quite an accumulation of bonuses to get through in the first couple of sessions, but we'll still cover 7 weeks of 1983 in each.

BEST

Pat Benatar - Love Is A Battlefield

Philip Bailey And Phil Collins - Easy Lover

Paul Young - Every Time You Go Away

Loose Ends - Hangin' On A String (Contemplating)

Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World

NEXT BEST

Sheila E - The Belle Of St Mark

Dream Academy - Life In A Northern Town

ABC - Be Near Me

'Love Is A Battlefield' is great and a real precursor I think to 90s dance like De'Lacy - Hideaway with the epic soulful vocal and fast production. 'Easy Lover' is a great mix of rock and post-disco. 'Every Time You Go Away' is a great emotive and atmospheric ballad. 'Hanging On A String' sounds very cool and ahead of its time in terms of R&B. 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' I used to really like but its been ruined a bit by overplay, it still makes my top 5 though.

'The Belle of St Mark' is a good Hi-NRG tune. Dream Academy - Life In A Northern Town is a good but sad tune. ABC - Be Near Me is a good song but they have a better song still to come in 1987.

Aww we missed Brer Rabbit's votes 😞

I missed the session last week and didn't find time to listen to the songs in the week since unforch, defo would have voted for The Smiths as well though, can't imagine it's likely any discoveries would be better than that for me so correct winner x

Was back this week though so:

Billy Bragg - Between The Wars

Philip Bailey and Phil Collins - Easy Lover

The Smiths - Shakespeare's Sister

Tam-Tam Pour L'Éthiopie - Tam-Tam Pour L'Éthiopie

Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World

2 obvious classics, one I also know well via my mum and expect I might be the only one voting for it (Billy Bragg), I think this The Smiths song was new to me but great as ever from them, and a real shame that Tam-Tam Pour L'Éthiopie song isn't on Spotify as it's one of my favourite discoveries from these in a little while.

Not many other noteworthy songs this week really (had a healthy enough 19 playlist adds, 20 including Tam-Tam Pour L'Éthiopie, but a lot that are just 7.5/10 level songs) but the next best I already knew were The Dream Academy and Frankie Goes To Hollywood and next best discoveries were The RAH Band and The Damned.

Yeah Billy Bragg must have been popular at this time as he wrote Kirsty MacColl's 'A New England' from the previous batch.

Just missing out: 'Duel' and 'Cry', I thought the former would make it but decided to reward a really good discovery from New Model Army in the end

Are 'Friends' Electric? is one of my favourite songs but I associate it more with 1979, so decided to stick to fresh releases from this period.

New Model Army - No Rest

Paul Hardcastle - 19

U2 - The Unforgettable Fire

Katrina And The Waves - Walking On Sunshine

Shake the Disease and Obsession were also very good songs I didn't already know.
