6. The Waitresses- Christmas Wrapping (977 points)

Writer: Chris Butler

Producer: Chris Butler

UK chart peak: 45 (16 weeks in the top 100)

Achieved platinum status on 06/12/2024

Top scorers: Mangø 48, King Rollo 47, WhoOdyssey 47

Lowest scorers: rio309 2, …ready for it 9, detonate 10, Nick F1 10

In 1981 ZE Records asked all of its artists to record a Christmas song for their album A Christmas Record, much to the annoyance of the Waitresses. Chris Butler wrote the track based on his hatred of the holiday. The song follows a busy woman who does not want to celebrate Christmas due to stress, but she later cheers up after advancing with a man she has been interested in all year. The title "Christmas Wrapping" was a play on words of "Christmas rapping" as the verses sounded like a rap.

  • Comfortably Numb should have done better than this. The guitar solo at the end of the song would be part of my top 3 all time guitar solos.

  • Why not slow down to say 2 per day for the final 10? Your pace of results has still been quite fast I’d say (brilliant job as always of course!) Oops at me being a low scorer for “Mardy Bum”: I love

  • Oh wow I get the honour of poster whose +50 has won 😮 ❤️ For years I went back and forth between 'Here Comes the Sun' and 'Tomorrow Never Knows' being my favourite Beatles track, the former a soothin

Thoughts on 10-6

9 To 5- never been a big fan of Dolly/country music in general and have never seen the film this was made for, never sought this song out. Can still respect it as a classic though

The Chain- awesome song, that closing instrumental is great, the BBC sports department in the 70s had great taste! My favourite song on Rumours by far, I'm actually surprised it only made it to number 9 in this rate!

Wouldn't It Be Nice- my top song in this rate! I always associate the Beach Boys with Summer holidays and escaping stress as we had their greatest hits on CD in the car while traveling. We still keep up the tradition to this day through streaming! "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is definitely in my top 5 of their tracks, Pet Sounds remains a classic. Brian Wilson really was a genius, may he rest in peace

Edge Of Seventeen- didn't realise John Lennon's death had an influence on this song! Can thank Jack Black in School Of Rock for getting me into this, what a great song

Christmas Wrapping- I absolutely hate Christmas music and am at the stage in my life where I'm becoming sick of the holiday in general. This is my favourite Christmas song in terms of its lyrics as for the most part I can relate to the stress of the protagonist, but I still find it extremely annoying (like nearly every other Christmas song) just because of how many times I've had to hear it unwillingly.

Top 5 will revealed on Sunday! Thanks everyone for your patience 😁

Three big losses at 12-14 yesterday, since then the only one I'm particularly glad to see in the top 10 that's dropped out is 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' - absolutely one of The Beach Boys' best songs, combining the cheerful singalong nature of their early hits with a deeper yearning in keeping with the Pet Sounds album as a whole.

Interesting top 5, a couple I expected to be here and a few others I wouldn't necessarily have called, but they all made my top 30 in the final.

The Chain was the 2nd of the three songs I thought might be the #1 here so surprised it is out already. One of my predictions is left. The top 5 does have some surprising but very welcome songs, it’s getting very interesting! Luckily I like all of them.

Very happy at the Beach Boys doing so well, Wouldn’t It Be Nice is a great song but boy its original A side God Only Knows is an absolutely wonderful song, one of my all time favourites. RIP Brian😢

Christmas Wrapping is one of the Christmas songs I can enjoy outside the festive period, maybe because it isn’t played to death every year like some other more obvious ones.

Wouldn’t It Be Nice massively overrated imo

“God Only Knows” is one of my favourite songs of all time. “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” is… just nice for me.

The moment when what’s now known as the F1 theme emerges in “The Chain” never stops being spine tingling. Another of my desert island records.

It’s always hard rating Christmas songs among a pool of non Christmas songs in midsummer, but “Christmas Wrapping” is absolutely one of the best Christmas tracks ever. Seems The Waitresses had some other great stuff too and were very underrated.

Producer: Alan Smyth

UK chart peak: did not chart

Taken from the Arctics' 2006 debut album, "Mardy Bum" is the second biggest seller to miss the top 100 behind J. Cole's "No Role Modelz", though it almost charted around the time of the band's 2023 Glastonbury performance. It was never released as a single. The phrase "mardy bum" is Yorkshire slang for someone sulky. Like "A-Punk" it was used in The Inbetweeners.

EXCELLENT song. Not surprised it's sold the way it has.

One of my top 3 songs of all time.

A song about a mundane day to day behind closed doors with your partner, the bickering and petty little fights, played out over a pleasant soft enticing melody. wub

'Christmas Wrapping' wub possibly my all time favourite Christmas song, or at least it would be comfortably top three! I just love how joyous it sounds!

Poor Kendrick but not surprising, I'm glad it reached the final after 'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe' didn't get much love

I really like 'Lost' as well but don't particularly care for anything else that has dropped out so far. Lana recently ended her concerts with a cover of 'Take Me Home, Country Roads', so maybe hearing that in a live setting could've helped it click, alas left just before it started to escape the mad dash of crowds at the end kink

'F**k You' was an early BuzzJack Song Contest winner under the aformentioned original title 'Guess Who Batman'!

Lana seems to be a big fan of John Denver, she references him and her last single was pure influence from him but Country Roads is not the one to go for - as a recent convert to his poetic imagery and melodies, Rocky Mountain High, Calypso and loads of others with a widescreen appreciation of the wilder parts of the USA and relationships are all way, way better.

I love F You and it should have been a rewritten single! 😇

I probably underscored Christmas Wrapping to be fair. But glad I did in hindsight because it feels a bit high here among some all time classics. Surprised The Chain isn't up near the very top of the rate. I might be biased as a massive F1 fan from the late 90s and 2000s but one of most iconic tunes ever!

5. Blondie- One Way Or Another (994 points)

Writers: Debbie Harry, Nigel Harrison

Producer: Mike Chapman

UK chart peak: 98 (1 week in the top 100)

Achieved platinum status on 30/08/2024

Top scorers: Uls2000 49, Slick 43, gasman449 42, Mangø 42

Lowest scorers: seven. 12, Cymro87 17, RabbitFurCoat 20

Kicking off the top 5 is the only song in the final to not appear in any voter's bottom ten! Inspired by Debbie Harry's experience with a stalker ex-boyfriend, "One Way Or Another" is included on Blondie's chart-topping 1978 album Parallel Lines. It reached number 24 in the US but was never released as a single in the UK. It charted for the first time in 2013 after One Direction's Comic Relief cover of the song as a medley with The Undertones' "Teenage Kicks" reached number one.

Great that 'One Way Or Another' avoided being in anyone's bottom 10!

I first discovered the song in Mean Girls (which also features a cover of Blondie's 'Rip Her to Shreds') but in time I became a big fan of the group; Parallel Lines is one of my favourite albums wub

I remember being very surprised to discover that 'One Way Or Another' was never a single in the U.K. as it feels so well-known.

4. Oasis- Champagne Supernova (995 points)

Writer: Noel Gallagher

Producers: Owen Morris, Noel Gallagher

UK chart peak: did not chart

Achieved platinum status on 14/09/2018, 2x platinum 18/03/2022, 3x platinum 22/11/2024

Top scorers: Chez Wombat 50, Cymro87 49, jimwatts 49

Lowest scorers: detonate 2, Nick F1 6, gasman449 10

The 7-minute closing track on Morning Glory is often considered one of Oasis' best songs and is a defining song of the Britpop era. Noel has stated he has no idea what the song means or is about, but is glad that people have their own interpretations of the song's lyrics. Paul Weller provides guitar work and backing vocals on the track. It was released as a single in Australia, reaching number 26, but was not released in the UK. Without the 3-track rule, it would've made the top 40 in both 2024 and 2025.

3. Simon & Garfunkel- The Sound Of Silence (998 points)

Writer: Paul Simon

Producer: Tom Wilson

UK chart peak: did not chart

Achieved platinum status on 27/05/2022

Top scorers: rio309 50, Julian_ 48, Severin 48

Lowest scorers: CianS 5, Nick F1 5, Mack 6

"The Sound Of Silence" is the oldest finalist. Originally included on their 1964 debut album Wednesday Morning, 3AM as "The Sounds Of Silence", the track was remixed the following year by producer Tom Wilson who added an electric band inspired by the Byrds, much to Simon's horror. The renamed remixed version became a US number 1 hit and was included on the soundtrack to The Graduate alongside other tracks by the duo. The revised title has since been applied to the original acoustic recording as well. The lyric "hello darkness, my old friend" came to Simon as he wrote the track with the lights off to increase concentration across multiple sessions. Simon & Garfunkel's version did not chart in the UK but a cover by The Bachelors reached number 3 in 1966. A 2015 cover by Disturbed reached number 29 and re-entered the chart in 2024, dodging ACR for a whole year and being certified 3x platinum.

Before getting into the top 2 and revealing the winner here's my thoughts on 5-3

One Way Or Another- I thank One Direction for introducing me to the concept of cover songs after a young me was mortified at what they had done to this classic! Not quite my favourite song by the band (that would be "Dreaming") but a very close second! Glad to see it avoided everyone's bottom ten and I'm very happy with a top 5 finish, didn't think it would do this well!

Champagne Supernova- for much of my life I've been surrounded by people who hated Oasis, a combination of their perceived basicness/unoriginality, Liam's nasal sunsheeine vocals and the dislikeable personalities of the Gallagher brothers meant both my family and friends would refuse to listen to them. Until 5 years ago the only songs I had heard from them were "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back In Anger" which I hated (and still hate today) and very much dislike the snobbery from a lot of people who think anyone who doesn't think the band are the best musicians ever are tasteless. Got bullied quite a lot back in the day because I just did not see the appeal compared to bands like The Beatles and The Beach Boys which I grew up listening to. I just see "Champagne Supernova" as a Beatles ripoff and while I can appreciate the musicianship (it's pretty good towards the end) a bit it's just a song I don't like listening to in full. There's some Oasis songs I've grown to really like ("Live Forever", "Morning Glory" and "Acquiesce" especially) but for the most part Oasis songs have a lot of baggage for me and it's hard to get past. Especially hard now when my uni friends are their biggest fans and everyone is raving about their live shows. Very happy this didn't win.

The Sound Of Silence- the acoustic version is so much better but an electric overdub could have worked if the timing wasn't so obviously off. Didn't really appreciate the lyrics until recently, in a world where people becoming more and more isolated from each other it's scary to see how ahead of the curve Simon was with this song. Can't complain at it being top 3

Edited by gasman449

Great to see Blondie so high! “Champagne Supernova” isn’t a personal favourite but absolutely one of the most iconic album tracks so not complaining.

I’d have loved “The Sound Of Silence” to win but that’s probably the best you can expect for a ‘60s song… oh wait.

Quite amazed by the final 2 actually. I had to go back through the results to make sure I hadn’t missed 1 of them, as although it’s great I wouldn’t have foreseen it as a contender at all.
