Direct to Final:

04 06 394 Wolf Alice - Don't Delete The Kisses

03 01 410 Lorde - Green Light

02 03 416 Dua Lipa - Be The One

01 02 422 Rita Ora - Anywhere

In a close race Lorde has vacated the top spot for the year with the new victor being Rita Ora. Also overtaking her into 2nd is Dua Lipa, who remains directly in the final with both her big hitters of the year. In good news for indie fans Wolf Alice leapfrog over Clean Bandit to place direct-to-final.

Little Mix continue to gain support in the contest this year, with 'Power' now joining 'Touch' in the semi-finals. The then-long-awaited comeback release from Steps is the highest returning entry, also passing to the semis. The Killers take a big jump to qualify with 'The Man' (possibly their best hit this side of the 2010s). Rising from modest top 40 positions to now have a second chance at making the final are entries from P!nk, Camila Cabello, Zayn, Portugal the Man and most importantly Avicii!! Superbowl impact also assists Kendrick to rise into the top 10 with 'Humble'.

Meanwhile it's a sad goodbye to both of Calvin Harris' hits, with 'Slide' taking a big slide down from last year's top 10 position and 'Feels' narrowly losing out. We also unfortunately lose Jax Jones and French Montana from the top 20. Lorde, Arcade Fire, alt-J and Adele also take hits.

Yes really! Most quotable song of 2017 + the beat genuinely goes hard

  • Excuse me?!

Didn't expect one of my noms to make it into the semis! Good to see Steps going strong - sure it made the semis before but then seemed to go out of contention and wasn't even nommed last year!

If only some of other noms were as successful D

'Oh Baby' and 'Play God' are great additions to the AQ zone. The latter was the first Sam Fender song I ever heard and probably still my favourite.

Fantastic to see 'oh baby' get an AQ. Discovered that song thanks to an US TV miniseries called 'A Teacher'

Probably the only one on here who appreciated 'another one' by DJ Khaled. Yes I know my taste in 'music' is very questionable on here.

Pleased at Oh Baby and Don't Delete The Kisses, in what otherwise seems a slightly less good year for indie (my type of indie at least) based on the first 3 rates.

I'm always curious in rates like this - is Don't Delete The Kisses getting 4x the points of Visions... because most people haven't heard the album so only know the main song? Or because most people genuinely think Don't Delete... is much better?

For me Visions is the outstanding song on the album!

What was the resurgence of Man's Not Hot?

@gasman449 can take the mic for this one

Shame it's not progressing but I can't be upset with a top 50 finish

Beautiful is what it is!

Oh dear, my nominations bombed again😆! This is my first year participating in this rate, so maybe I’ve been a bit naive nominating some relatively obscure stuff I like rather than things I think others might like/vote for?

From several years of participating in RotD, I get the impression that most people only vote for what they already know. However I always try to listen to the songs I don't know, although it takes time to find them all (especially without a playlist), and I was a bit pushed this time, but I did like 'Strangest Thing' from your nonimations and it could have made my votes on another day. From 2016, 'Nobody's Baby' was one of my favourite discoveries and I gave it some points. So I appreciate the new finds, even if they don't end up qualifying!

love the album, but couldn't quite fit the title track into my votes in what is a pretty strong year imo, so I'm massively contributing to that skew (personally "Planet Hunter" is my favourite on it)

I think it’s always good to nominate and increase the variety and not worry too much how well it does. I do try and listen to what I don’t know but only get time to do it once so I can’t promise I always give it fair consideration if it doesn’t stand out immediately. Again no playlist does make it more effort, otherwise I might be able to listen more, but that’s certainly not a criticism of Dan as I know it’s a lot of work for him (and I think he tried to find a co-host but couldn’t this time).

Thanks guys, I’ll keep doing what I’m doing then!

To be honest I did reign my nominations in a bit, otherwise you might have got this masterpiece from Peter Cat Recording Co. for 2018. Maybe next year?!

Please keep nominating your favourite tracks, even if obscure! I don't always get time to listen to unknown songs in this rate, but when I do they can often become favourites of my own. Examples from the last few years include Shum, Oh Baby, Wait (M83), Out Of The Woods, Saint Claude and of course Doomscroller which not only got me into that song but into the whole wonderful band that are Metric!

Oh I have to admit I haven’t heard much Metric, so on your recommendation I’m going in for a deep dive! Where do you suggest starting?

I always mean to listen to some of the songs I'm unfamiliar with for ROTD but then don't get around to it whoops - maybe I should make a playlist of the songs I don't know from this year and aim to familiarise myself with some of them in time for next year lol

(With regards to the specific examples, I only really got into Wolf Alice during the 'Blue Weekend' era so I only know a handful of songs from the first two albums, I haven't heard 'Visions Of A Life', but re alt-J I do know the whole of that album and do just think '3WW' is by far the best song on it! Although 'Adeline' wasn't far off my votes and I would have voted for 'Deadcrush' if it was nominated x)

Ooh tricky question. I started with whatever YouTube was recommending to me, which was generally the most popular songs.

I'd say...

Doomscroller

Risk

Gimme Sympathy

I Will Never Settle

Now Or Never Now

Other Side

Lost Kitten

...is a good mix of songs to get started.

Or, if you'd rather a complete album, either Fantasies or Formentera
