Great finish, Toxic was one of Britney’s biggest ever singles and it was great to see her back on top form after a few years.

But Lola’s Theme has my heart, and was No.1 for five weeks in my personal chart, I loved it from the moment I heard it. Great sample, brilliant production, fantastic vocal from Cookie, a lovely sentiment with it being for Lola, and such a good melody and bassline. Poor Rachel Stevens and her ‘dreams of number one last forever’ but I was so glad this got to No.1 over Some Girls, I was never quite sure which was that chart battle would go.

Very fun rank to follow John as there were a lot of unexpected placings which makes for good discussion. Thanks!

1 Britney Spears - Toxic (1 week - 13th March) 10/10 1 week on top is outrageous for record of the year, chart-topper or non-chart-topper. Britney's best by a pop mile, and a classic, exciting danc

  • Well I don't like to boast about these things. It was just a quick side project while I was setting up my women's high street fashion chain!

  • Sorry for giving you this year John - it really is pretty poor haha. But I agree poor “5 Colours In Her Hair” should be trouncing most of these. “Call On Me” I probably would have had higher just bec

Probably the same top 2 as me, but they are close and both fantastic in different ways.

By far Britney’s best I agree!

Call On Me, Lola's Theme and Toxic are easily my three faves of the list so great to see two of those ranking similarly highly here!

Lola's Theme is wonderful, it's just so uplifting. Definitely my favourite #1 of the year. Toxic is still a good choice though, it's definitely Britney's best single for me and was one of the strongest pop tracks of the decade.

'Everytime' is my fave of the two Britney songs but both are excellent. 'Mad World' already commented on but it's a raw and moving cover and 'Lola's Theme' is fabulous too. Such an euphoric dance anthem <3

Excellent outcome, 'Toxic' and 'Lola's Theme' are not just my favourite #1s of 2004 but my two favourite top 40 hits of that year as well. The former is pop perfection, with production as appropriately intoxicating as the subject matter. The high pitched Bollywood string sample was particularly a stroke of genius. 'Lola's Theme' is often the first song I want to hear as soon as the sun comes out. The house production, feel-good lyrics and gospel-inspired vocals suit that time of year to a T.

Thank you for putting this countdown together, John! I did remember you being a 'Toxic' fan but otherwise this was an unpredictable ride and an enjoyable one at that.

Would also have put 'Toxic' right at the top, undeniably great song. Pretty much in agreement with your top 5, all are great, saved quite a weak year for #1s with some really excellent tracks. Nice countdown to read through John, thank you.

(Mysterious Girl was the song I was alluding to earlier, can't stand it personally but honestly looking at all of this field it has a fair bit of competition for the worst)

That Robbie Williams song is not bad actually. I didn't remember it until I clicked on the video.

I had no idea it went to number 1.

I can get on board with the top 5 here, Lola's Theme is my absolute favourite number 1 of the year, one of the most sunny and uplifting dance tracks with a great vocal delivery as well as production, however Toxic was Britney at her peak, still sounds so big and ahead of it's time in a similar way to how Kylie sounded with Can't Get You Out of My Head. Everytime was also an effective show at her vulnerable side. Yeah is definitely Usher at his peak as well, though Climax comes close as well.

I admittedly don't remember the Robbie one too well, but Vertigo is classic U2 at their most zany and I do have a soft spot for Mysterious Girl, cheesy as it is x

My own top 10 (not counting Mad World as that was last year):

  1. Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme

  2. Britney Spears - Toxic

  3. U2 - Vertigo

  4. The Streets - Dry Your Eyes

  5. Usher feat. Lil Jon & Ludacris - Yeah

  6. Eric Prydz - Call on Me

  7. LMC vs U2 - Take Me to the Clouds Above

  8. Natasha Bedingfield - These Words

  9. 3 of a Kind - Babycakes

  10. McFly - Obviously

Nostalgia overtaking me for those last few x

Thanks for doing this, John, looking forward to 2005....

8 - Vertigo

7 - All This Time

6 - Real To Me

I think they were allocated some time ago, but joining in is still fun! 👍

Nice finish to this John, can't argue with the top 2. Would probably have Lola's Theme in the same position. Not as big on Toxic but definitely one of Britney's best and stands out in this year.
