Shine! One of my favourite songs of 2000, and cancelled at the last minute for a single release in the UK leaving Vanessa as a one-hit wonder (when it probably would have gone top 20 here).

Albeit the lyrics never made any sense to me at all until I discovered that every mention of Shine in the song was originally 'die' but the label told her to change it. Which doesn't surprise me because 'everyone you see, everyone you know is gonna die' isn't the most uplifiting thing to listen to. But it makes sense in the context it was written, about a friend's suicide.

Modjo. Didn't think much of Vanessa's sadly and I love 'Absolutely Everybody' too.

I've gone with Shine as well. I loved her first album, I got it for my 12th birthday.

She actually had a few very pleasant songs.

I have always enjoyed just pleasant fun female pop songs, not every song has to have absolute depth and hidden meaning, just some joy in music.

I did wonder at the time why Vanessa didn't follow up 'Absolutely Everybody', I'm guessing this was scheduled for some week in late 2000/early 2001?

Giving it to Modjo though, a classic.

It was definitely played on the music channels from late 2000 but canned before release. I did buy the album around this period too which is how I was aware of it.

She also had a No.1 in Australia a lot later, in 2009, called This Is Who I Am which deserved a UK push - it was very P!nk/Kelly vibes.

I have always thought that Vanessa has one of the most powerful voices in music. She works and tours a lot nowadays with Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics.

The revival Vanessa had from 2007-2009 was wonderful. Perfect, This Is Who I Am, Mr Mysterious. Even her collaboration with Hoobastank on The Letter.

I also really liked Amazing in 2011, it’s a shame that album git cancelled.

Yes Perfect was great too. I bought the album containing that and bought the follow-up album too, although must have imported them both as they were not released here.

She tried out for Eurovision a few years ago and I think came 3rd (?) in the Australian national final, but the song wasn't one of her best. I wish she would be internally selected (along with Sheppard who have also tried out for it).

Oh nice, I bought her second album Change as an import. I think it only got a release in Germany from memeory.

I think the Eurovision song was 2020. I agree I’ve heard a few of her songs from the 2019 onwards but that haven’t matched the releases from 1999-2011.

I’ve gone back and listened to this. I remember finding out years after release it was meant to be called Die and not Shine, but the lyrics “don’t don’t, don’t don’t you do it” finally ,are sense now. They made no sense at the time and it’s obvious why now.

I didn’t know the Vanessa track but was better than I expected. Voted Modjo nonetheless.

To pass comment on the other song, Lady I ranked in the top 20 of my No.1s of 2000 rate - I do love the backing track and music, but the vocal is not my favourite.
