ooh go Käärijä

I may be partly to blame for Doomscroller, Exile, Faded (and other good tracks like that) falling so much, I didn't vote this year, wasn't feeling it.

needless to say that would NOT have been my choice of winner but can't say it is undeserved even with recency bias. anyhoo that concludes the year's proceedings and just before Christmas too, yay! I

  • Wow, what a showing for Steps out of nowhere! Fantastic song though. That drop for Don't Start Now, however 💔

I think the only one I hate in the top 20 is that Carly Rae Jepsen thing.

Commencing the top 20 we have a new peak for Christine And The Queens, now matching the UK chart peak attained! Originally a French language song 'Christine', it was re-recorded for the English as 'Tilted' to become his major breakthrough with the Frenglish version of the debut album subsequently performing well. Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding's third teaming up proved to be their most loved across the forum, whilst also providing them with a first UK #1 hit together. Assisted by its clear 90s trance influence and Ellie being the perfect choice of vocalist, 'Miracle' now ascends ten places in year two to join the top 20.

Unexpectedly racing up to finish on a high we have one of Justin Bieber's peak era hits from 2015 in 'Sorry'. The middle of a trio of UK #1s, this one was always the most preferred on Buzzjack but had not placed in the upper half of this countdown until now. Even some of his haters had agreed this was quite the improvement in quality and so it was no surprise when it proved to be a mega-smash even when going up against Adele's comeback single. However now that the apology has been accepted the song will have to retire from the rate.

2023 for Eurovision was widely considered one of the best years for quality with both of the leading contenders being much-adored on the forum. Two years after the fact they both hold up as well as ever, firstly with Loreen registering a climb with 'Tattoo' which went on to be an even bigger hit than her prior smash 'Euphoria'. Meanwhile as Buzzjack awaits new material from the man we have another big climb for Harry Styles with 2022's best-seller 'As It Was', which currently is the most recently-released song to hit the 4bn mark on Spotify.

All five being repeaks is pretty cool

I think I misunderstood this. I always think of repeaking meaning claiming back to a previous peak, rather than reaching a new peak.

That's a really nice and consisted run for Tilted with a nice new peak. wub

A top 5 of Cha Cha Cha, Tilted, Escapism, Miracle and Angel Of My Dreams or Tattoo would still be a great outcome to the rate so 🤞

So that's half of the list not exactly troubling the top 5 😅

Cha Cha Cha continuing to outrun Tattoo sorta surprises me, but then the former is definitely the sort of thing more likely to galvanize big points from those who love it, whereas pop fans have more to choose from than Tattoo. Still, a climb for Loreen is fabulous to see.

Spending a second year in the top 20 we have 'Levitating' as Dua Lipa's second-highest entry. The song remains as her biggest ever streaming hit across the rent-a-rapper version with DaBaby and the original solo album mix. After having taken a year out to recover from 'Radical Optimism' rumour has it we will get some new material around April of next year. Meanwhile the gap between Loreen and Kaarija has narrowed as 'Cha Cha Cha' remains at a very respectable 14th. He has the highest foreign language entry and is also the second-best performing male artist in this countdown. He recently made a re-appearance at Eurovision duetting with Baby Lasagna (whose similar hit hadn't quite so well with the forum).

We say goodbye to a former winner in Carly Rae Jepsen. She ran away with the competition in her second year and continued a successful run after that never departing the top 40. The song now takes a small dip from last year's top 10 and now completes its decade. It was infamously not a UK top 40 hit despite following up a top 3 smash and receiving much critical acclaim, though ultimately helped her secure a loyal fanbase. RAYE also departs the top 10, although there has been significantly more competition this year in the upper region with three songs from 2024 still to come. 'Escapism' remains a big pop fave of recent times particularly with her more recent big smash 'Where Is My Husband' giving it a chart resurgence by association. I still wouldn't rule it out being a top contender in years to come. Just outside the top 10 we have the big comeback hit for Kylie, which provided her first UK top 10 in a decade much to Buzzjack's amazement and excitement. She is once again the big talking point of the day here as her Christmas single just hit #1 though one perhaps wouldn't expect that to be a ROTD future smash given its seasonality.

11-20, while nowhere near as good as last year imo, is again miles better than the top 10 🙃

Carly's run has been absolutely stellar wub Deserved, a highlight of a fantastic pop album.

Top 10 time! Once again the sole male performer here is The Weeknd, whose former winning song 'Blinding Lights' completes the first half of its decade all inside the first ten positions... just about as it sinks to 10th. The song remains to this day the most streamed song ever having passed the 5bn mark on Spotify and continues to somewhat overshadow more recent material of his with the forum. One of its old rivals in 'Midnight Sky' sits besides it in 9th, also remaining a perfect top 10 run so far for Miley Cyrus. Likewise her more recent material hasn't performed quite so well commercially so this is likely to remain her critical peak for the time being.

But what's that... Another song from coming to disrupt the pecking order of the peak Covid year? Well yes we have a huge 90 place boost for Chappell Roan. 'Pink Pony Club' had already been a hit last year which saw it scrape at the bottom end of the final however a renewed chart run and prolonged exposure in 2024 saw it gain a fair amount of supporters. It'll only have five years left to further prove itself here now but such are the rules of this contest. It's been an excellent year for her with not only that but her breakthrough hit 'Good Luck, Babe!' enters in at 6th, being the third-highest new entry. While being the more recent release it was what really kicked off her commercial success and remains her best to date - an excellent piece of pop music which I much prefer to the new entries in the top five but hey ho. Sandwiched between we have Ariana Grande, who likewise has two songs in the top 10. 'Into You' is the first of these which continues a stellar run in the contest with one more year left to contend.
