That's something of a coup for Band Aid to finish top 10 and ahead of Wham! It did at least have a re-release which peaked at Christmas #3 on physical sales (like The Pogues, or at least while physicals were still dominant in their case), and it still betters the many versions which came since.

'Daddy's Home' a pretty unsatisfying filling but with amazing bread in 'Don't You Want Me' and 'One Of Us' wub the latter is beautiful, in my ABBA top 3.

I think I voted for all of the top 10 so good work, BuzzJack.

Christmas number one: I Have A Dream / Seasons In The Sun - Westlife

Christmas number two: The Millennium Prayer - Cliff Richard

I believe this was the first song to have Top 20 runs in 4 different years, just before the Pogues did it (and then had 18 more). It wasn’t released even released as a single at all after appearing on his album of the same name in 1971, but then became a #6 hit in conjunction with a 1975 compilation by John and the Plastic Ono Band. After his death in December 1980 it was re-released and became part of a trinity of back to back Lennon #1s. But it later became a Christmas #3 when given a millennium re-release.

Imagine is nice enough. It was touch and go in my votes as I tried not to vote for any of the songs that are actually just really successful #1s that happened to hit #3 amongst their many chart runs, but I was definitely running out of other options that I actually wanted to vote for.

Christmas number one: Stay Another Day - East 17

Christmas number two: All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey

Oasis’s first six peaks had a satisfying 31, 11, 10, 7, 3, 1 peak progression. This was the #3 in that sequence, released in Christmas week and entering behind two other huge classics. The single straddled their first two and biggest studio albums and does not appear on either, but is on the “Time Flies” compilation.

Whatever <3

That was the first single I bought by Oasis and I still really like it. My main memory is just how good the single was though, I wasn't used to buying a single and genuinely really enjoying all of the tracks on it so it was quite a surprise. Arguably Half the World Away is more famous than the main track these days.

Imagine is always a classic. Obviously it's a bit weird hearing one of the most successful musicians ever telling us to "imagine no possessions" but it's such a powerful track that gets you thinking. I've come around a lot on Oasis over the past few months, I think Whatever is a solid track and gave it some points

'Imagine' is a classic for the simple clarity of the music and its message - I bought the CD single that week in 1999 and it had 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' and 'Give Peace A Chance' as the other tracks. (Its fourth run in the Top 20 didn't come until 2012 following the Olympics, but I think the first song to have Top 20 runs in 4 different years was instead Free - All Right Now, in 1970, 1973, 1978 as "The Free EP" and 1991.)

'Whatever' was one of the moments Oasis began to stand out as an ambitious band, and not just for releasing it at Christmas. I couldn't believe they didn't put it on an album, although that helped it rack up the most weeks in the Top 75 of any single in the 1990s, and 'Half The World Away' as a mere B-side goes to show how stacked with great songs they were at that time.

Ok, I'm a bit less angry about these results seeing the last 3 songs in the top 10 I didn't vote already revealed.

Shame that non necessary cavalry hasn't yet been stopped though. drama

Don't forget this needs to be updated post 2025 to 31, 11, 8, 7, 3, 1 magic

'Whatever' is not quite among my very favourite Oasis songs but a classic nonetheless and always amazed by its chart run. 'Imagine' also a classic ofc x

Gotta Get Thru This - Daniel Bedingfield

Chart run: 08/12/2001 {1}-1-2-3-2-1-3-6-13-11-13-22-27-39-45-55-54-54->18

Christmas number one: Somethin' Stupid - Robbie Williams & Nicole Kidman

Christmas number two: How Wonderful You Are - Gordon Haskell

This iconic UK garage track was recorded in Daniel's bedroom using a microphone and a PC running the program Reason. Inspired by Daniel's separation from his then-girlfriend from Leeds, "Gotta Get Thru This" found a following in the UK garage scene after he sent the track to DJs who played the track as part of their sets. The song was released as Daniel's debut single and it was a massive success, becoming the first of 3 number ones for Daniel and helping his album become one of the biggest-sellers of the 2000s decade. It was also a big hit in the US where it reached the top 10 despite UK garage not being a popular sound there. It was nominated for a Best Dance Recording at the 2003 Grammys.

Gotta get thru this is a tune even if overall he is the weaker Bedingfield (how he had more number 1s than natasha is crazy) it was definitely the strongest out of those 3 Robbie/Nicole version of something stupid is just terrible

Stop The Cavalry - Jona Lewie

Christmas number one: There's No One Quite Like Grandma - St. Winifred's School Choir

Christmas number two - (Just Like) Starting Over - John Lennon

Jona Lewie (real name John Lewis, his name is a shop!) previously found success with the number 2 hit "Seaside Shuffle" from 1972 as part of Terry Dactyl & The Dinosaurs. In 1980 he bagged a solo number 16 hit with "You'll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties". He followed it up with this anti-war protest song. Originally written with the gallantry of the Crimean War in mind, Lewie changed the lyrics to reflect all soldiers. The brass section is played by a Salvation Army band. The song contains only one reference to Christmas, with Lewie's label Stiff Records adding a bell section in the hopes of improving its performance over the festive period. If John Lennon had not been murdered and his songs did not enjoy a revival, this song would've been number one in the first week of 1981!

Aww “Stop The Cavalry” would be my winner. It’s a proper classic #3 and was unlucky to coincide with the Lennon grief, and it’s just the right level of Christmassy as well.

I like all the Top 5 though.

'Whatever' is my favourite song to depart the top 10 so far, as you can see. It went over my head a bit at first, but ended up being a slow burner and now I'd consider it one of their best. The orchestration is gorgeous. My parents told me it was playing in the car when they were moving into their first house together, so that's a nice family memory too.

'Imagine' is a classic and I think well-intentioned although I can understand its criticisms... I'm still slightly haunted by that celebrity version during the pandemic.

Garage was a great move for Daniel's debut single, what a tune, although unfortunately a bit of a tease - as I associate him more with ballads in the long run.

Love a bit of 'Stop the Cavalry' ❤️ the lyrical content and brass are both stirring.
