'Going Under' is brilliant, certainly just as good as 'Bring Me To Life'!

  • Or maybe Bananarama's version leans in more to people's pop tastes rather than being to do with recency? A 40 year old song isn't really that much more recent compared to a 56 year old song!

Wonderful Life is the song I grew up to. It will always be special song for me. The melody is timeless and always gets me chills in positive way. One of best songs ever recorded for me

VOTING HAS NOW CLOSED Thanks to the 42 people who voted. The results will start tomorrow.

Surprised to see ‘Going Under’ so low - but then again there were a lot of great songs in the rank. It was far outclassed though by the other two big hits from the album.

Oh that's a really disappointing last placer, Fools Gold is a classic, it does a wonderful job slowly building over it's runtime and a classic riff throughout. Admittedly my vote was mainly for that rather than the other side, but you can't go wrong with debut era Stone Roses.

Maybe some found the nearly 10 minute song off putting? Though I’ve always thought ‘What The World…’ is a great song too.

My favourite ever Top Of The Pops was in November 1989 when The Stone Roses played Fools Gold and The Happy Mondays were also on there with Hallelujah, both fantastic performances and a breakout moment for indie dance music. Felt like a breath of fresh air at the time, two of ‘my’ bands making it big. Good times!

Guilt was the third single to be taken from Nero's debut album 'Welcome Reality' although the album itself had not yet been released. The next single, 'Promises', went all the way to number 1.

Fly On The Wings Of Love by the Olsen Brothers won the 2000 Eurovision Song Contest for Denmark. In the same year, came this cover version by Spanish dance act XTM which wasn't a hit in the UK until 2003. It peaked at number 8 three times in a chart run of 9-8-12-9-8-9-11-10-8-10.

Interesting that even the lowest song has an average of more than 19 points.

4 of my bottom 10 have gone already!

Firestone was the first of ten top 40 hits for the Norwegian DJ/producer, each of them with a different featured singer. In this case, it was the Australian singer Conrad Sewell who reached number 1 in his own country with 'Start Again'.

Oh I am gutted at 'Guilt' being out already, that's a huge favourite for me </3 I do remember half wondering if I should have given it my top ranking in the nominations to give it a wildcard instead of 'Incredible' though so I suppose considering that it's not bad going that it got to the final.

Actually none of the songs that are out so far were in my bottom 10 ('Firestone' and 'Fly On The Wings Of Love' both only just avoided it) - 'Fools Gold' is a very surprising last placer, albeit a song that I really only remember for its instrumental riff (but it's an all time classic riff so x), while Plastic Bertrand and Evanescence were both in my top half, I don't like the other two big hits from that Evanescence album but 'Going Under' is a tune.

'Guilt' and 'Firestone' are standout songs for dubstep and tropical house respectively.

'Fly On The Wings of Love' is cheesy but fun and also may have influenced the recent hyperpop genre.

Guilt is a great track but I much prefer both Promises and Me And You from Nero. Fly On The Wings Of Love is a massive cheesefest but still pretty fun. Firestone is okay but I feel like it's very of its time.

'Firestone' is so, so good and still sounds amazing blared out on a hot sunny day! All of Kygo's subsequent output is basically a rehash of that song lol but that remains his OG masterpiece wub

Dubstep is a bit of its time but 'Guilt' is a pretty good example of it.

'Fly On The Wings Of Love' is a bit of a guilty pleasure, it's very cheesy but one of those songs you can't help but sing along to. It brings out the camp in me.

Agreed with this general sentiment though I'm not quite as enthusiastic about it in general - I found the tropical house sound got played out extremely quickly and Kygo in particular really never put out anything else I liked at all iirc but 'Firestone' still remains a good representative of the genre.

Plastic Bertrand the only one I'm fussed about so far, hilariously fun, always. Fool's Gold is very pleasant, low key vibes and surprised to see it last but maybe the low-key nature of the track works against it being memorable for some.

There was a poll within a poll as we were also deciding what our favourite version of Venus is and Bananarama have won as Shocking Blue appear first. The original was a hit for the Dutch group in 1970 and reached number 1 in several countries, including the US. The follow-up single, 'Mighty Joe', missed the top 40.

From 1976, this was the Irish band's first top 40 hit since 'Whiskey In The Jar' in 1973. They went on to have two more top 10 singles but this one remains as their signature song.
