To be fair to Pussy Palace it has been described as a ballad elsewhere. And at the risk of being on my own on this, Chiquitita starts off slow then ends up being a jolly old time gaga

The ones I know: PP, Chiquitita, The Last Goodbye, Piece By Piece, Casual - all fab!! I wonder if Chappell’s mentor was debating whether to save Casual for the flops or ballads? kink

Cosmic Love - I’m sure I’ve heard this but can’t actually place it by name alone. 😭

Everything else will be a discovery!

Certainly some interesting choices here.

I love Not Me, Not I, but I was half expecting either of Wish You Were Here or Almost Here to be sent.

Pussy Palace is a great song, but a ballad? I was expecting Littlest Things.

Wow, quite a few songs in this round I'm not familiar with, looking forward to a listenthrough tomorrow!

Definitely agree that 'Pussy Palace' is NOT a ballad, I'm absolutely baffled why Lily's mentor didn't send 'Somewhere Only We Know' :/ unless they're saving that for another round? (personally I love 'Lost My Mind' but that probably wouldn't have done too well here). If the voting public considers this as not strictly adhering to the rules, Lily might be in danger for this round!

Not really sure I'd consider 'Chiquitita' strictly a ballad either - I think I'd have gone for 'Fernando' or possibly 'One Of Us'.

This is probably what I'd have sent for The Weeknd for ballads week:

  1. Delta Goodrem – Not Me, Not I (this has a great build, I love the light and shade of the delicate storytelling in the verses with more oomph and drama in her chorus performance, particularly at the crescendo)

  2. Atomic Kitten – The Last Goodbye (such a lovely song, and one of their best - that was a double a-side for the ages, it's rare that both sides of a release are just as good as each other and promoted equally)

  3. Kelly Clarkson – Piece By Piece [Idol Version] (just an absolutely beautiful and raw vocal from Kelly and a lovely stripped but emotive backing, reminiscent of the Live version of Beautiful Disaster)

  4. Conan Gray – Forever With Me (best discovery of the round, Conan can certainly consider that he has a new fan after this competition, I love the theatre in his performance)

  5. Florence + The Machine – Cosmic Love (a sparkling highlight from one of the greatest albums ever, that Baroque influence in the production <3)

  6. Scissor Sisters – Mary (really lovely, a classic - I'm actually not always so keen on Jake Shears' vocal but it sounds nice here, especially on the quiet verses, and the music is utterly gorgeous)

  7. ABBA – Chiquitita (a classic of course, although only a few of their No.1s are among my personal ABBA favourites but you can't deny that pretty much all of their chart toppers are crowd pleasers)

  8. Chappell Roan – Casual (this was all over romantic TikTok videos for ages, it's a lovely ballad from Chappell)

  9. David Bowie – Five Years (a fairly strong discovery - I also added this to my playlist and like Bowie's voice on it)

  10. ROSALÍA – Mio Cristo Piange Diamanti (the structure of this is interesting, and it's vocally great although melodically less my cup of tea, a nice choice nonetheless)

  11. Lily Allen – Pussy Palace (it took me out of the zone a bit listening to the playlist although I like the song)

  12. Troye Sivan feat. Betty Who – HEAVEN (quite a nice collaboration and their voices compliment each other)

  13. HAIM – Gasoline (pleasant, but didn't enjoy it as much as the rest)

I really love ballads and almost all of these are great choices. I listened twice and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Starting to wonder how many people would have the balls to be this critical of others' choices if it wasn't anonymous geri

Please can we be a little more encouraging/supportive; everybody's going to have their own interpretations and opinions on songs each round but I'm not seeing the point in posts pretty much saying 'ffs THIS should've been sent, ridiculous'. Reflect your thoughts with your votes, and I'd hope that everyone will judge each of the songs fairly based on quality.

I for one am glad we don't need to sit through that cover of Somewhere Only We Know kink

Oh yes Mary is fab too! I meant to include that. melb

Tbf people are playing tactically with their choices so I wouldn't ever say "should have sent this!!" bc for all we know they fully intend to should they get through to further rounds 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'll still be voting based on which songs I like the best anyway, regardless of how well it might fit the theme (agree chicken tikka is probs in the same category though 🤭)

To me a ballad is all about the kind of instruments and production a song uses - not so much how quiet or slow it is.

Honestly, I'm not entirely against PP being here now tbh. I think it works and is just a more modernised version of a ballad.

  13. Chappell Roan – Casual
