'Heart of Asia' is such a good atmospheric trance tune.

'Tell Me Why' sounds/has lyrics way more wintery than a May released track.

Both quite unpoppy trance songs making the charts despite the success of the poppier Alice Deejay form of the genre.

The bassline and feminist message of the Madison Avenue song are good but the vocal style/effects sounds very of its time. Another dance song at #1 though!

It and all the dance songs top 10 reminds me how 2000 and 2014 are the biggest ever years for dance in the UK chart and they look unlikely to be beaten any time soon.

27TH MAY

Sandie Shaw was 20 years and 2 months old when she scored a third UK number One single and remained the youngest woman ever to get the hat-trick a record she held for 23 years until Britney a few weeks ago. She was 18 years and 5 months old but now Britney has been replaced by our very own Billie Piper at a mere 17 years and 8 months old, you’ll also note that in a move to promote a more mature image she’s now using her surname! “Day & Night” opens with 104,208 buyers a tally second only to “Girlfriend” in her cannon on opening weeks evidencing that we clearly missed her, it will come from her second album which we’re assured she’s hard at work at.

DJ Luck & Mc Neat are back with the long awaited follow up to “A Little Bit Of Luck” which ended up selling over 200,000 copies. “Masterblaster 2000” is (as you might suspect) a garage makeover of the Stevie Wonder 1980 classic, their version first surfaced on a white label promo by the pair late last year called “On Da Street” but has been remixed to include a sample of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” (All Star Remix). It debuts at No 5 (34,000).

More Dutch dance up next in the form of Southside Spinners, “Luvstruck” was released last year when it petered out at No 81 but makes a much bigger splash now thanks to the inclusion of it on the soundtrack to “Kevin & Perry Go Large” which is already a hit at the box office and pushes the track to No 9 (20,000).

Last week’s No 1 from Madison Avenue retreats 1-2 (61,000) ahead of Britney Spears 2-3 (50,000) whose album of the same name is defeated by Whitney on the album front this week. Also over on the album charts Tom Jones is knocked 1-3 and his single “Sexbomb” also fades 3-4 (45,000), but it’s back up for Bloodhound Gang 8-6 (25,500) though it continues to lose sales week on week. Three fallers to round us off, Watergate lose 6-7 (23,000), Oxide & Neutrino bound 5-8 (21,000) and Armand Van Helden slips 4-10 (19,000)- that’s a low sale for the top 10 since January and reflects the fact that the market fell to just 870,000 in total, again the lowest since January.

1- DAY AND NIGHT- Billie (104,208)
2- DON’T CALL ME BABY- Madison Avenue (61,000)
3- OOPS!...I DID IT AGAIN- Britney Spears (50,000)
4- SEX BOMB- Tom Jones & Mouse T (45,000)
5- MASTERBLASTER 2000- DJ Luck & Mc Neat (34,000)
6- THE BAD TOUCH- Bloodhound Gang (25,500)
7- HEART OF ASIA- Watergate (23,000)
8- BOUND 4 DA RELOAD (CASUALTY)- Oxide & Neutrino (21,000)
9- LUVSTRUCK- Southside Spinners (20,000)
10- KOOCHY- Armand Van Helden (19,000)

3RD JUNE

This week turned into a chart surprise week perhaps not seen in quite some time! Anyone who watched a lot of TV through the week or switched on the radio would have thought that S Club 7’s new single “Reach” was on track for the top spot as the group hired out helicopters to transport them all over the country on a media blitz that would put even a superstar to shame.

In the end it was beaten by a record which sold itself, this time around! Former S Express member Sonique first released “Feels So Good” back in 1998 peaking at No 24 and selling just over 30,000 in its initial run, it then started to take off in the US in late 1999 and has peaked now at No 8 last month (the first US top 10 single by a British act since Five in 1998). That gave it the impetus for another UK release with new mixes which generated a lot of club interest sufficient to see 195,306 copies be sold last week- the second highest 7 day tally of 2000 so far. It has taken most commentators by surprise with most anticipating S Club 7’s second chart topper today but now and again the British public surprises us.

So what about that S Club 7 single then? “Reach” is the first release from S Club’s second album “7” out in a few weeks and becomes a fourth top 2 single in a year, and much like “Bring It All Back” it acts as a theme tune to the group’s TV show, this time the second series of “LA 7” which is coming to an end. It’s co-written by former Republica keyboardist Andy Todd and popstar Cathy Dennis and was a firm favourite on their recent tour, it pulled in 123,500 buyers last week, a figure only beaten in its initial week by “Bring It All Back”. With the aforementioned promo blitz you can’t accuse them of not doing all they could to be No 1!

It’s been over 4 years since Bon Jovi have had a top 10 single though of course in part that’s because Jon Bon Jovi has been busy acting and scoring hits in his own right. They return with the Max Martin co-written “It’s My Life” and a new album to excite fans, the single did brisk business easily entering at No 3 (82,500)- that’s the most that any Bon Jovi single has ever sold in a single week! Their 12th top 10 single you can buy the parent album this week which will probably curtail any improvements for this single. Also by way of interest it’s the first time in 3 ½ years that one record label can claim all top 3 singles (Universal) and the first time ever that all three are new entries and all belong to the same umbrella group.

images.jpg

Australian singer Sia has been a backing singer for Jamiroquai in the past but is now a star in her own right with “Taken For Granted” which is new at No 10 (20,000). It is based around a sample of Prokofiev’s “Montague’s & Capulets” which no doubt those of a classical persuasion have already worked out.

Thanks to those three big new entries at the top everything else in the top 10 descends in neat order by three spots, Billie Piper 1-4 (67,000), Madison Avenue 2-5 (42,000) Britney Spears 3-6 (33,000), Tom Jones & Mousse T 4-7 (33,000), DJ Luck & MC Neat 5-8 (26,000) and the now 300,000 selling “Bad Touch” 6-9 (22,000) for Bloodhound Gang.

Next week will see the battle of the ex-Boyzoners as Mikey Graham goes head to head with Stephen Gately!

1- IT FEELS SO GOOD- Sonique (195,306)
2- REACH- S Club 7 (123,500)
3- IT’S MY LIFE- Bon Jovi (82,500)
4- DAY AND NIGHT- Billie (67,000)
5- DON’T CALL ME BABY- Madison Avenue (42,000)
6- OOPS!...I DID IT AGAIN- Britney Spears (33,000)
7- SEX BOMB- Tom Jones & Mousse T (33,000)
8- MASTERBLASTER 2000- DJ Luck & MC Neat (26,000)
9- THE BAD TOUCH- Bloodhound Gang (22,000)
10- TAKEN FOR GRANTED- S.i.a (20,000)

I miss the days when multiple classic singles were released on the same week, but that's what we have in It Feels So Good/Reach/It's My Life. I wonder why Universal didn't stagger them, as Reach could have got past Billie a week earlier, it had been played on the music channels since late April so was ready to go.

I don't recall being surprised at the outcome though, in the weeks leading up to release I remember thinking Reach was going to be beaten and wondering why they had gone up against Sonique (whereas, e.g. the No.1 for Madison Avenue did surprise me a little a couple of weeks earlier).

Is always funny to think that Sia's first top 10 hit is that long ago, although 20k isn't a hugely impressive sale for 2000.

'Luvstruck' is such a great trance track.

The Sonique track is very nice and my parents liked it too at the time.

'Masterblaster 2000' is good too, I prefer it to 'A Little Bit of Luck' which is rather boring and repetitive.

'Day and Night' and 'It's My Life' have a similar style of production. Good and dramatic.

I am surprised that Girfriend outsold Day N Night first week! Although i love both!!

Masterblaster is a tune!!

S club must have been amazed that Reach didnt ‘reach’ number 1!

I despise that Bon Jovi song - vile on all levels.

I do adore Feels So Good still, plus Reach is obviously a feel good classic plus also very fond of Day and Night.

Belle + Sebastian fabulous as well outside the top 10.

A top 3 *.*

Sonique, S Club 7, Bon Jovi-you’d never get a top 3 so varied and all iconic in the charts these days.

It is a wonder they weren’t staggered because they’d have probably all made no.1 for a week if just Bon Jovi had been released this week, S Club 7 the next and then Sonique the next week.

Yes 2000 could do with more number ones 😀

Just to comment on the rest of these episodes, for some reason Day & Night never gelled with me much, I think it felt too Britney-esque and forced for me somehow compared to Billie's first era. Sure, music moved on in two years and she had grown up, but it felt a little bit of a copy. I preferred Something Deep Inside.

Masterblaster 2000 is just ok for me, Luvstruck a nice trance instrumental but not incredible, I had no memory of the Charlatans or Bentley Rhythm Ace songs but they were decent.

Madasun's Walking On Water was naff really and a big step down from Don't You Worry, the former probably shouldn't have been anywhere near the top 10 and that hype guy didn't work with the style of track. Don't You Worry should have been top 10 for weeks, like it was in Australia.

A couple of interesting entries lower down - the theme tune to Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (!) and Don't Play That Song Again, the Steps-esque Eurovision entry from Nicki French, as we turned the page for a new century at the start of our flop era that we never really recovered from aside from the odd entry here and there.

I like Reach probably a little bit more than It Feels So Good, but both are classics. I also liked It's My Life due to Tommy and Gina and the talk box return, it felt like a sequel and had great production for me.

Gutted we didn't hear I Don't Smoke by DJ Deekline at No.11, such a great use of samples in that.

The Belle and Sebastian song was fun, they have so many songs that should have been hits. And down at No.82, Misunderstood by Kick Angel should have charted!

'Feels So Good' is one of the best dance tunes ever, such a classic <3

Love 'Reach' and 'Day and Night' as well. I do prefer this era of Billie's to the one before. 'Heart Of Asia' is great too. I like 'It's My Life' but much prefer a load of Bon Jovi's song over it myself.
