13 t.A.T.u. - All About Us

avg: 7.39

👑 Pop Royalty11 (Dobbo, Roba.), 10 (Juranamo, DaTilt, Scene, blacksquare, troublepink)

 Pop Flop2.5 (777666jason), 3 (lewistgreen)

t.A.T.u. are next to fall in unlucky position #13 with a respectable average of 7.39.

Lena Katina and Julia Volkova got to work on a second English language album (and third overall) following the success of 'All The Things She Said' and its parent record 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane.

They were back in 2005 with Dangerous and Moving and chose to lead it with dramatic pop rock single 'All About Us'. The writing team behind this song notably includes Jessica and Lisa Origliasso, aka The Veronicas, four years before they'd impact the U.K. top 40 with their own material. Josh Alexander and the late Billy Steinberg also have writing credits. The two previously worked together on hits such as 'Too Little Too Late' by JoJo and 'Don't Hold Your Breath' by Nicole Scherzinger. Steinberg wrote several classic 1980s songs too with former writing partner Tom Kelly, from Madonna's 'Like A Virgin' to 'So Emotional' by Whitney Houston. 'All About Us' was produced by Martin Kierszenbaum and Robert Orton, who would both later work on Lady Gaga's The Fame, the former as a producer (with the 'Cherry Cherry Boom Boom' tag) and the latter as a mixer. Kierszenbaum was also one of the writers of 'All The Things She Said'.

'All About Us' directly addresses tabloid gossip about the girls and sees them putting on a united front. The music video, directed by James Cox, also feeds into this as sensationalised newspaper headlines flash up throughout. The visuals were often censored on music channels due to the violent scenes in the home of a man that Julia's character picks up on the street.

'All About Us' was a third and final U.K. top 10 single for the girls as it charted at #8. They were the third highest debut that week in October 2005, behind Sugababes at #1 with 'Push The Button' and Liberty X's 'Song 4 Lovers' at #5. This #8 position would follow songwriters The Veronicas around too as they'd later land there with 'Untouched' and 'You Ruined Me'.

This rate was all about t.A.T.u. for Dobbo and Roba. as they awarded the girls their top mark of 11. However, 777666jason won't be too gutted to see them fall, as he gave them a lowest score of 2.5.

Atomic Kitten’s effort was pleasant enough - not their best but by no means their worst. Maybe a tad surprised to see it this “low” but not necessarily unwarranted. All About Us remains a trashy bang

Should have stuck to the acting.

I do like this track, and loved the follow up Friend or Foe, which flopped here. I guess at least they got one extra hit that avoided them being a one era wonder, the song definitely does sound like early Veronicas so the co-write there makes sense. Gomenasai probably deserved to be a UK hit too.

I also gave All About Us an 11, meaning tatu got 2 of my 3 for this series!

Ahhh apologies my sleep deprivation is showing! Your 11 is definitely in my spreadsheet so accidentally overlooked it in the presentation. Edited happy

First act with multiple 11s to drop out.

Atomic Kitten’s effort was pleasant enough - not their best but by no means their worst. Maybe a tad surprised to see it this “low” but not necessarily unwarranted.

All About Us remains a trashy banger however. I recently put this on, on a jukebox, in a really pale male and stale oriented pub in Yorkshire and the clientele were most displeased kink (oop @Viper* )

'All About Us' is another fab single from t.A.T.u. for me and was a fairly easy 11 for me from this edition, shame to see it get lots of low votes :( Love 'Friend Or Foe' too which deserved to go top 40 at the very least!

Oh wasn't that a fun day kink

But to be clear, that is far too low.

Not a fan of the Kittens version of The Tide Is High. I'm guessing if Billie Piper went ahead and released her version like was planned in 2001 then this the Kittens version would've never happened.

Some catching up to do.

'Boyfriend' has been truly robbed here, the Mis-Teeq song is fairly lame, the Atomic Kitten cover is very lame (happy to see that crashing out relatively lowly) and 'All About Us' is great!

12 The Pussycat Dolls - Don't Cha (feat. Busta Rhymes)

avg: 7.43

👑 Pop Royalty10 (Juranamo, Nina West), 9 (...ready for it, Roba., Paddington James, 777666jason, JosephStyles, Bror)

Pop Flop-1 (Viper*), 4 (Henessy Lake)

The Dolls have not dominated this rate enough for a top 10 position. Instead, they settle for 12th place with a 7.43 average. 'Don't Cha' received the same score as another song in the rate but loses out on a tiebreak, due to receiving less 10s.

American dancer and choreographer Robin Antin originally formed the Pussycat Dolls in 1995 as a burlesque troupe. Their line-up consisted of several different members over the years including both Christina Applegate and Carmen Electra. Their profile rose in the late '90s after landing a feature in Playboy magazine.

The dolls in their burlesque troupe days had connections with other Pop Princesses, as they featured in the music video for 'Trouble' by P!nk from this very rate, plus performed alongside recently departed t.A.T.u. at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards. Later on that year, Robin Antin struck a deal with Interscope Records to develop the Pussycat Dolls into a brand, where they would evolve into a mainstream pop group. At this point, the remaining members of PCD as a burlesque troupe were: Robin Antin herself, Carmit Bachar, Cyia Batten, Kasey Campbell, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta and Kimberly Wyatt. Auditions were held for further members and introduced Nicole Scherzinger, Melody Thornton and Kaya Jones to the line-up. Over time, Antin shifted into a strictly managerial and creative role. Kaya Jones left the group in September 2004 while Cyia Batten and Kasey Campbell departed in January 2005. So the final six members left to take the PCD brand forward were: Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Nicole Scherzinger, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton and Kimberly Wyatt.

The girls had debuted as a recording group at the MTV Asia Awards in 2004, where they performed 'Big Spender'. They also recorded 'We Went as Far as We Felt Like Going' for the Shark Tale soundtrack and a cover of 'Sway' for the film Shall We Dance?, which ended up on their debut album PCD as an international bonus track. 'Don't Cha' was chosen to properly lead PCD.

'Don't Cha' was written and produced by Cee Lo Green, who also has backing vocals on the track and appears in the music video. Sir-Mix-a-Lot of 'Baby Got Back' fame also has a writing credit as the chorus is based on the hook from his 1988 song 'Swass'. Finally, rapper Busta Rhymes is also credited for his feature.

'Don't Cha' was originally recorded by Tori Alamaze, a backing vocalist for OutKast. Her iteration narrowly missed out on the Billboard Hot 100, instead making the Bubbling Under chart. Her label Universal then gave the song to the Pussycat Dolls after learning about their re-launch, as Interscope is owned by them. Prior to this, the song was offered to Paris Hilton, who turned it down. Sugababes also missed out on releasing it. The Dolls recorded this sassy song with Nicole Scherzinger front and centre as lead vocalist. This template would continue for the rest of their time as a group.

The music video begins with the girls on jeeps. They then roll up to a party and confidently show off their dancing talents. Busta Rhymes also appears in the video and cosies up to Scherzinger. Nicole stated that he was a fun person to work with. The video was directed by Paul Hunter whose credits also include Gwen Stefani's 'Hollaback Girl' plus the Snoop Dogg and Pharrell collaboration 'Drop It Like It's Hot', amongst many others.

'Don't Cha' proved to be a successful launchpad for their transition into a recording group, as it became their first U.K. #1 single. They initially debuted at #44 on imports alone and then climbed to the top, dislodging 'DARE' by Gorillaz at #1. They spent three weeks atop the U.K. singles chart and blocked both 'We Be Burnin' by Sean Paul and Kanye West's 'Gold Digger' in the process. They were then replaced by Sugababes' 'Push The Button' in a girl group swap at the top.

'Don't Cha' was the fifth best selling single of 2005 here. The girls recently reformed as a three piece consisting of Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts and Kimberly Wyatt, so the Official Charts Company released a PCD-centric article earlier this year. This revealed that 'Don't Cha' has amassed 1.58 million chart sales to date, their biggest seller.

I know you like me, I know you do... these words ring true for 'Don't Cha's biggest fans Juranamo and Nina West, who awarded the girls a 10. Maybe next lifetime Viper* would be just as enthusiastic, but for now, it's a hard pass - as they received -1.

it was announced yesterday that Lauren Bennett from fellow Robin Antin project G.R.L. has passed away, R.I.P 🕊️

Some rather WTF results there with t.A.T.u and PSD. I’m not especially fond of “Don’t Cha” but it was undeniably a very strong debut and I thought it was well regarded here.

I loved it at the time, but I feel like it was and continues to be so overplayed it's hard to get any enjoyment out of it anymore. Almost similar to Toxic in that regard.

I probably favour quite a few of their other singles over this.

Oh gutted I missed this, looks so good. I need to come into this forum more! Justice for Lindsay Lohan though, Over is absolutely incredible and deserved SO much more!

Loving the write ups, just had a read through them all!

Atomic Kitten were also ROBBED! They were so much better than they get credit for being. 💔

Dont Cha amazing at the time but cant stand it now!

I watched a interview with Keisha (Sugababe) recently and she said they begged to have this track after Dallas Austin played it for them and it was a firm

no!
