Hello, smarties! 🔊

As with previous years, we’ll be bringing another round of quizzes to both the UK Chart Forum and The Lounge. The main quiz season will kick off next week, but we’re opening the sign-up threads now so there’s plenty of time to get organised and grab a slot to host a quiz.

I’ll be coordinating the quizzes in the Chart Forum, while @matto will be taking care of the Lounge. @PeteFromLeeds will be keeping track of everyone’s scores and handling the results throughout the quiz season.

Since this thread is in the UK Chart Forum, sign-ups here are for quizzes that fit the UK Chart Forum calendar and theme. For anything that feels more at home in The Lounge, please use the corresponding sign-up thread over there.

So for this thread, you’re signing up for the quizzes taking place in the odd-numbered weeks (Week 1, Week 3, Week 5, etc.). I’ve also included the even-numbered weeks, when quizzes will be taking place in the Lounge, so you can see what’s coming up there too. This should also make it easier to keep track of the overall schedule - once a quiz in the UK Charts Forum finishes, you’ll know that the next one will be taking place over in the Lounge.

We’re really looking forward to seeing your sign-ups and all the fun quiz ideas you’ll be bringing to the season! 🩵

Quiz Schedule:

Week 1 (31st August) - @nine¾ (UK Charts)

Week 2 (7th September) - @matto (The Lounge)

Week 3 (14th September) - @Mangø (UK Charts)

Week 4 (21st September) - @DaTilt (The Lounge)

Week 5 (28th September) - @Jay79x (UK Charts)

Week 6 (5th October) - @Spiceboy (The Lounge)

Week 7 (12th October) - @LiamSime (UK Charts)

Week 8 (19th October) - Available (The Lounge)

Week 9 (26th October) - Available (UK Charts)

Week 10 (2nd November) - Available (The Lounge)

Overview of the main Quiz formats

FAMILY FORTUNES
(example: voting thread / results thread)
In this quiz, the host asks a series of questions (typically 10 of them) and participants answer each question with what they think the MOST popular response will be. Points are scored based on how many other people gave the same answer as you to each question, so for example if the question is 'name a single by El Chombo' and 15 people responded 'Dame Tu Cosita', each of those people would be given 14 points for that question. Most points wins.

POINTLESS
(example: voting thread / results thread)
This quiz is basically the inverse of Family Fortunes. The host will, again, ask a series of ~10 questions, but here the participants answer each question with what they think the LEAST popular response will be. Points are allocated the same way as in Family Fortunes but here it's the player with the fewest points at the end that wins (so the best answer to a question - a Pointless answer - is one that no other participant answered). There's also the catch that an incorrect answer is penalised by giving the answerer the maximum possible score for that question, i.e. one less than the number of participants (so if there are 31 participants and someone answered the question 'name a winner of the X Factor' with 'Michelle McManus', they would be given 30 points for that question).

There have been variations on this theme in the past, such as Pointless with Bonuses and Pointless With A Twist (and Pointless Fortune which combined Pointless with Family Fortunes)

NEVER MIND THE BUZZJACKS
(example: voting thread / results thread)
The host uploads onto SoundCloud/YouTube a series of short (usually instrumental) clips from songs, usually about 20 of them, and participants simply have to name the songs, scoring a point for each one they get right, or a half-point for guessing the right artist. There's also often some kind of bonus questions based on the songs on the side for additional points. Here's a quick guide RabbitFurCoat put together wayyy back in the day with some instructions for uploading a round of NMTBJ onto SoundCloud.

ALBUM COVER PUZZLE
(example: voting thread / results thread)
The host makes a collage of cropped sections from album covers, usually about 20 of them, and participants name the albums that they are taken from. Participants get points for each one they get right - this may just be 1 point per correct answer, or a varying number of points decided by the hosts based on how difficult they think each one is to guess. Like in NMTBJ there may also be bonus questions on the side for additional points.

OTHER FORMATS
You are also welcome to try other formats out which aren't listed above! Other formats we've had in the past include:

Only Connect (courtesy of Suedehead)
Emoji Quiz (courtesy of awardinary)
Quick Fire Quiz (courtesy of chrissmith276)
Song Title Anagrams (courtesy of jimwatts)
Answer Smash (courtesy of StoneDragon)
Missing Vowels Quiz (courtesy of PeteFromLeeds)

So you're welcome to propose something brand new or use one of these alternative formats as well.

credit to Bror for putting most of this together originally in 2019

The leaderboard awards 30 points for 1st place, 29 for 2nd, and so on, with only the top 30 players scoring points. Hosts who can’t or choose not to participate in their own quiz will instead receive compensation points based on their average score from the other quizzes. Hosts can still play FF/Pointless, as long as they submit their answers before everyone else.

Sure, written down! 😊

Happy to do a Pointless or Family Fortunes in Week 9? I’ll do whichever of those hasn’t already been taken
