This was discussed in the chart predictions thread. I always thought it was 9 to 5 in the modern era and it’s the song I think of when I hear her name. What does everyone think?

I think it’s flipped between Jolene and 9 to 5 over the years, with 9 to 5 being the biggest in the download era (it had a fair few weeks low top 100 in 2007-08) and Jolene in more recent years thanks to various viral trends, the Beyoncé version etc.

Amazing how equal they generally seem today though given their very different chart positions at the time, I wonder if the reason 9 to 5 didn’t go top 40 originally is that people saw it in shelves and thought it was a cover of the Sheena Easton song - which they retitled in the US to avoid it being confused with Dolly’s song.

Jolene by far.

U.K. Jolene, USA 9-5 and I’d argue islands in the stream challenges both somewhat in both regions. Plus I will always love you deserves a mention.

I would say I Will Always Love You is almost if not just as ubiquitous as Jolene and 9 to 5, but not so much her own version.

It is definitely a toss up between “Jolene” and “9 To 5”.

We need to also think about the impact outside of US and UK as well, and I can guarantee you that Jolene will win if random people are asked to sing a song from Dolly!!!

Personally I would always think of '9 to 5' first! Maybe I've heard it more or something.

I would've said '9 to 5' when I was a kid but 'Jolene' feels like her signature song in the streaming era to me!

Jolene but 9 To 5 and I Will Always Love You feel like well-recognisable tracks which I'd understand someone choosing as her signature song - interesting that Islands In The Stream (correctly imo) isn't mentioned much here given it was technically her best-charting track (even though it's been overtaken on streaming nowadays)

I would say 9 to 5 for me, but that may be because I have connections to the song (a friend loved it, we dressed up as characters from the movie etc).

Yes she made more money from that than any other. Refused Elvis permission to record it in 1975 as he wanted half the songwriting royalties which she refused. Good for her. She felt it was a woman's song too.
