Once again I don't really see the appeal in a trending song.

 

It is very funny (and kinda worrying) how similar these numbers are to the numbers of the current top 10 – obviously, the chart cutoff has completely skyrocketed since then; back in 2015, it only took 20k to enter the top 200 😂

They all seem like fairly big and well remembered hits! I wonder how many of this week's top 10 will be as well remembered in 10 years...

not What Do You Mean? actually outstreaming Rein Me In by over 50k streams on the same day ten years earlier (yes I know RMI would win when taking into account other platforms but it illustrates how low streams are at the top of the charts at the minute)

I bet most of that top 200 were songs that were released in 2015, or at least hadn't charted beforehand.

In my lifetime alone, I’ve gone from buying cassettes, to CDs, to downloading music, and now streaming it. It feels like every decade or so, there’s been some new technology or format that completely changes the way we consume music.

Streaming feels like it’s been around forever now, so I’m really curious what the next big shift in how we listen to and experience music will be.

'All' is a bit of a stretch I'd say, I definitely haven't heard that version of 'Ain't Nobody' for a long time at least.

Obviously no real way of telling right now but I could make a case for most of the current Spotify top 10 still being quite well remembered in a decade's time. 'Rein Me In', 'Man I Need' and 'Choosin' Texas' surely aren't going anywhere any time soon in the public consciousness (and 'Mr. Brightside' lol), the 2 Olivia songs definitely deserve to be remembered at least, and 'Loser' has the connection to a massive record breaking film (mind, I don't really care or know enough about the MCU to have any read on if 'Spider-Man film #56' will be any more memorable than any of the others regardless of how well it does at the box office. Also the song is not very good). 'Great Expectation' could probably go either way depending on how long of a career SIENNA SPIRO manages I guess. It's only really 'Earrings' and 'Boston' that I'd say stand out as being more likely than not to have only fleeting popularity.

I'd be interested to hear what others say, but I can't really think of any technological advances which would lead to other ways of consuming music which are even on the horizon at the moment. So it's probably something that hasn't been invented yet. I would imagine that streaming will be around for a long time.

I couldn't actually get any of the sites I tried to work (they either didn't let me send it that far in the future, asked for payment or said they'd send me an email to confirm and didn't). But I've made a reminder on my phone for 8/9/2036. So I'll dig this post out then assuming BuzzJack still exists, Spotify still exists, I am still alive, etc.!

Plus this was the era before TikTok where old songs didn't stick around quite as long as they do now or classic songs revived out of nowhere as much.

I feel like it's a moot point to do the song & dance about how 'no one's going to remember these songs in x years' because it ignores the often frivolous reasons people do remember songs (eg marketing or otherwise dumb things like TikToks), as well as saying more about a potentially large group of individuals and their active choice to strain themselves from the conversation (by not actively engaging with current hits) while refusing to actually cut themselves from it (by insisting on making these kinds of comments like it's the music's fault itself). It feels more likely to me that someone who doesn't know the song "Man I Need" probably swore off popular music because of a lifestyle change (ironically, getting married is a big one) or a more contentious hit song years prior, rather than Olivia Dean being the tipping point.

But also it's incredibly easy to just say these things with little knockback because it'll take years to prove. It sounds witty in the moment, and might well be correct, but I'd sooner imagine someone broadly shaping their ideal reality over the truth, or boastfully declaring themselves to be right, than face any consequence for making a profoundly bad prediction.

Also if you look at what the actual most popular songs of 2015 are now, I reckon it's a little different to what we all imagined at the time.

I think the biggest change is that Spotify has been adopted by a much bigger userbase now, most of whom are not that interested in new music - or at least not as receptive to the limited pool of new songs which have enough shared popularity to make up the chart.

I've joked before that one day songs that are stuck in your head or that you sing in the shower, etc, will one day be counted and included in the charts.

But I think more realistically, the next advancement will be personalised AI-generated music, where for each user it goes through your previous listening habits and generates songs just for you that tailored to be exactly the type of music you listen to the most.

Could be, but at the same time lots of music consumption is related to social encounters. How can you discuss anything music related if everyone listens to their "own" songs? Would people just stop going to bars, concerts and festivals?

Downloading and Streaming had been precursor-ed by the pirates years beforehand. If the industry doesn't provide what customers want customers will find a way to get it anyway. Right now music piracy seems to have been eradicated by streaming suggesting customers have what they want. All music, in one place, free to play.
