What is the trend? That is the thing. I don't think there is a specific trend. Maybe a country resurgence but beyond that? Random songs hit most of the time. What do people want?

Looking at the chart they seem to want authentic (mainly female) song writing. Orbiter is so popular because its on all the TikToks about babies. It connects to people in their everyday lives. And people don't care if the song is old as long as it makes them feel something. Ariana ticked all those boxes but the songs weren't good enough. Taylor's songwriting on Showgirl seems distant. The 'look at me, I'm in love, and I'm getting married, nyeh nyeh' thing is pretty alienating

That's why Taylor's Lover album hits harder than The Life Of A Showgirl. Although she was happy in her life during the recording & release of Lover, her lyrics weren't pushing that narrative so hard. We still had those deep meaning songs such as Afterglow, The Archer, Lover as well as the fun bops in ME!, You Need To Calm Down & The Man. The Life Of A Showgirl is a solid album in parts but it just feels a bit clunky with no song that hits you as hard as the Lover tracks, other than The Fate Of Ophelia & possibly Opalite.

That's what I mean by artists need to put a bit more oomph into some of their tracks whilst also having those singer-songwriter type tracks which have that more personal connection with the fans.

As mentioned above, ADÉLA is proving you don't need to be all personal & upfront in your songs to get a hit. They just need to find that balance.

I disagree , the lover album she was in a cloud of what she thought was love and how she thought it was meant to be, she believed she was happy but she wasnt truly happy

TLOAS , she is genuinely truly in love and is the happiest she has ever been, and the passion from it literally oozes through, shes literally singing about how shes found her person, and yeah thats turned her into a "lovesick teenager" so what shes happy

Lyrically her best work is when shes miserable, heartbroken

That's why she should take a folklore approach to songwriting in the future. Doesn't necessarily have to be the same sonically but I mean in terms of fairytale storytelling where she creates stories instead of using her life experiences all the time. She can still do that whilst creating some fun, catchy pop songs or delving into more folk style music. Take 1989 for example, the song All You Had To Do Was Stay was a song about a relationship drifting apart but it still had that catchy beat to it. But I agree, she's much better when she's heartbroken, got alot of angst or been through a bad experience.

There's definitely a trend. It's mostly singer / songwriters and country doing well at the moment. There was a time where the chart was mostly dance / dance pop and rap. There's definitely a shift.

I said this before but artists who underperformed would jump onto a dance feature and pretty much be guaranteed a hit.

Rodrigo's catalogue has been seeing some decent boosts over on Apple Music (deja vu + drivers license returning to the top 100 and some minor gains for her three current hits) but it doesn't seem to have impacted Spotify to the same extent unfortunately
