Tesco and Asda used to sell them, but they seem to have stopped doing that in most if not all their stores. Obviously there wasn't the demand, or at least they thought they could make more money if they put DVDs or video games on the same shelves. I think the supermarkets sometimes makes exeptions, such as for the X Factor winning single, or something like the Katie Melua charity single in Tesco. The problem is, the supermarkets have to be pretty confident of big sales before they'll bother.

I admit I don't buy physical singles very often these days, but part of that is that I am rarely anywhere that sells them. I always used to browse the new releases and charts when I was in a shop that sold them, and would make impulse buys. It's not just bad news for the Westlifes and McFlys, it's bad news for pretty much everyone who doesn't make the crucial playlists.

There is the argument that it will encourage artists to pick their single releases more carefully, but that might just mean picking the songs they think radio will play a lot and we'll have even more and more old songs hanging around for months and months.

Money

Tesco profits = £2 billion+

give them proper promotion and placement and give it a go. :arrr:

BUT think about it, what if in a few years time a mega-virus wipes everyones PC of everything!! would we all be refunded for all the non-existant singles we've purchased?? hmmm just a thought!

Well, if you don't back it up and that happens, you deserve to lose the money for being so ridiciously stupid.

As for the main topic of the thread - can't really say I'm surprised.

Noooooo :( Seriously what's the point in PAYING to download a single? You're just paying for the track and artist name on a screen and that's it really, not adding to a collection and not really something you can show! Unless it's a strictly download only single I refuse to pay to download music! If record companies don't make my preferred format available then why should I pay for it?

Well you shouldn't have to backup things you have rightfully purchased once. Why should have to pay again to download the same thing <_<

A CD is always there on your shelf/stand/rack etc., and cannot be deleted from it :P

Visited 3 big Woolworths stores over the past 2 days - None of them sell singles anymore (Bar the exception of 1 store which was stocking the new Leona single  )

Went into my local HMV today and they are only stocking the Top.5 singles and a handful of new releases positioned in the furthest corner of the store...It was a pityful sight - Of their "new releases" they had Leon Jackson and Kylie Minogue  I doubt physical singles will last the year at this rate....

The supermarkets (Tesco and Asda) used to sell CD singles for between £1.97 - £3.97 - I can see why they stopped they sell CD albums so cheaply (eg: Kylie £4.97, Take That £4.97, Katie Melua £5, Now 69 £10) that from a customers point of view why would you buy the new Kylie single for £2.97 when for £2 more you can get her album?!

Zavvi are stupid. Why change it's name to Zavvi. It sounds like Chavvi.

Richard Branson wanted to sell Virgin Megastores the Management bought it out ;)

It's a play on the word tech 'savvy'. Hence Zavvi.

how

I was on iTunes earlier looking at something I downloaded a while back and all it said was Buy Song

But i love my singles...Madonna always releases amazing 12" picture discs and she'll be releasing 4 Minutes on a special 7" picture disc this time round!

Maybe they'll only release Madonna singles then cos' all of her singles are considerd huge events unlike any other ordinary act. Mmmm interesting!

You have to do report a problem or something like that. If you tell them that eveything's been wiped and you can prove it's the same account/ip adress etc I don't see why they wouldn't. I know it you can cos someone on another forum I post on had the problem and that';s how it was sorted, can't find the thread though...
