Just thinking about the terms of hit records - what do you say a hit is? top 10 top 75 top 20...so if a record has become a massive radio record and everbody knows the tune - but that record didnt chart in the 75 - can it be seen as a hit or not??

A hit is a song that is either one or all of the following IMO:

1) Has a good chart run in the Top 40

2) Sells a moderate amount of copies

3) Has heavy radio airplay and is well-known

This is depending on how big the star is! Like Kylie, Britney, Madonna etc... if they only got top 15 - Its deemed as a flop! But if they got Top 10 then its deemed as a Hit!

Taio Cruz, Jay Sean, Alphabeat - If they all get Top 20 then its deemed as a hit!

If you catch my drift

well.

id say the following would need to apply

40k copies sold

makes the top 20

britney - break the ice and spice girls - headlines were both dubbed flops yet both made the top 15 and sold 40,000 or more units

They were flops compared to the usual chart records of Britney and the Spice Girls. Back in the late 1990s it would have been unthinkable that a Spice Girls track could miss the top 10.

I'm with Johnjo on this, it depends on the act. For some acts, a top 75 would be a great success. For the likes of Britney and the Spice Girls anything less than a top 10 is a disappointment.

For me, a proper hit song would be a Top 20 song - that's where all the really successful, mainstream acts end up - obviously with the Top 10 being the creme de la creme of those acts.

Officially though I think a hit song is one that charts? So it'd support the theory that it depends on the act... it's a hit if it charts, but not deemed a hit if it performs less well than the act's other songs.

I agree with Slick and Johnjo

All depends on the artists track record.

It also depends on the genre. When Pavarotti died a song of his went top 20 as far as i can remember and that would have been a superhit. Vivaldi- Four Seasons got to #3 sometime in the eighties and that would have been an amazingly huge hit also.
Who would say then SUGABABES - DENIAL was a hit as i love this song,it charted at #15 but was a tough week and has sold around 70k copies?i think thats a hit.do you?
yes.id say it was sucsesfull ,i really made up they released it.

See thats been deemed as a flop by many fans and others!

i know, but i dont really think it was really.do you?
I'd say for the Sugababes to miss the top 10 would be a flop sadly. Although I guess it sold a reasonable amount for a #15.
it was a togh week entering though, thee was A LOT F new enteries :)

A tough week is no excuse though (hit wise), the sales were constant compared to other weeks.

Ive also now decided its the length of the chart run aswell as whos singing it!

I mean Gabriella Cilmi apparently has had a MASSIVE hit - despite only peaking at number 18 this week!
