It depends what you call a flop - it means different to different people

To some a single is a flop if it doesn't reach Top 10.

I call a flop a single that doesn't reach the Top 75

I think all of these have.

I don't nesscarilly (sp?) mean flop in the true sense I just mean songs that have no been as succesful as the first hit

I'd call a flop if a top 3 followup fails to make the top 20, or a top 5 followup fails to make the top 40, or a top 10 followup fails to make the top 75. Ne Yo flopped last era, i think he stands a better chance not to this time around for some reason.

Adele is not a flop she has just had 1 top 3 hit and 2 top 20 hits how is that a flop actually anyone who hits the top 40 isn't regarded a flop unless they are lower compared to their peak position of the chart

Interestingly 2nd singles might flop but 3rd singles will often be a success compared to the 2nd single and often sells more. Like Kate Nash and Adele and Alicia Keys, possibly Mariah Carey too.

Well The Feeling were definately flopstars unfortunately :(

After an album which done really well (despite only reaching #2) springing 5 top40 hits...

They get an album which reaches #1 and plummets like a brick...

Now to the SINGLES

I Thought It Was Ove made it to #9 and reached #12 on downloads alone...

Without You reached #60something (worse than the 5th single off their 1st album) :( (havent checked how well (or not) Turn It Up has done yet...

Without You i can say DESERVED its position though as it is the worst song on the album :puke:

All of McFlys!

And Westlife

This is where I'd differ with alot of people. Yeah they might not have the consistency to stay in the charts long enough, but I think a flop is exactly what SilverRocket said. And whether we like it or not, none of their singles have missed the Top 10! So i (personally) dont consider them as "Flops"

I think the majority of second singles are going to be "flops" in the new download era; people can cherry-pick and preview tracks as soon as the albums are released, they don't need to wait for the single release anymore.

#67, despite the album re-entering cos of it.

This is true. It's now exactly a year to the week since we had a number one which was already available on an album!

Another one - the Kaiser Chiefs: after Ruby, their singles made 19 and 22.

The Scissor Sisters are another example: the two singles after IDFLD made 19 and 29.

so right... we will never have artists scoring 3 or 4 number 1 singles from the same albums like we did in the 90's and early 00's...

the next trend will be for artists to release 2 or 3 singles before releasing their album, which is the only way to give them more than 1 hit.

David Jordan didn't flop when his second single did better than his first...

But really though, the next single which followed on from his big hit did, and nobody knew about him or his first single when it was released. So it's effectively the same thing...
