Posted September 7, 200816 yr US girl group Pussycat Dolls have made a triumphant return to the UK charts this week with new single When I Grow Up making its debut at No.3 solely on download sales. Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl stays at No.1 for a fifth week as a result of its physical release while Eric Prydz is also a non-mover at No.2 with the instrumental dance track Pjanoo. US singer Katy Perry has triumphantly spent a fifth week in control of the UK singles chart with her controversial single I Kissed A Girl. The worldwide chart hit is the first big success from her One Of The Boys album, due out here later in the month. I Kissed A Girl finally received its physical release this week and has received a considerable sales boost after weeks of slowly falling sales for the track. Katy is the first American female to spend this long at No.1 in the UK chart since Cher’s Believe spent seven weeks at the top in late 1998, almost ten years ago. She is also the third artist of 2008 to have achieved five weeks at No.1 with a single. Basshunter’s Now You’re Gone and Duffy’s Mercy, the first two chart toppers of the year, also achieved this feat. Both of these artists followed their huge No.1 singles with top three follow up’s and Katy will be hoping to follow in their footsteps with Hot ‘N’ Cold. The album’s second single was also co-written with Swedish producer Dr Luke and has gone top twenty in the US this week for the first time. Swedish DJ Eric Prydz debuted at No.2 in the UK singles chart last week with the infectious instrumental dance track Pjanoo. Following the physical release of the track last Monday it is a non-mover at No.2 and looking unlikely to ever go any higher. Nonetheless, it is the highest peaking instrumental hit of the noughties and Eric’s third consecutive huge hit after the 2004 No.1 Call On Me and last year’s No.2 Proper Education. American girl group Pussycat Dolls first arrived on the scene in the UK back in 2005 with the huge No.1 singles Don’t Cha and Stickwitu. The then six piece achieved three further top ten hits; Beep, Buttons and I Don’t Need A Man, all from their debut album PCD, which has sold over a million copies in the UK despite never reaching the top five. When I Grow Up is the first single not to feature former band member Carmit, who recently left, and is the first release from upcoming new album Doll Domination. It makes a very impressive debut at No.3 and could well challenge Katy Perry for the top spot next week. Rihanna’s Disturbia continues to pick up momentum but slides a place to No.4 due to the arrival of Pussycat Dolls this week. Disturbia has been inside the UK top ten for five weeks now and has moved 9-6-4-3-4. Rihanna has now overtaken Westlife as the most prolific top twenty artist of the decade, having racked up an incredible 93 weeks inside the UK top twenty with eleven singles since her debut in 2005. Second placed Westlife have achieved 87 weeks inside the top twenty with a more substantial eighteen releases. Rounding off the top five this week is Irish trio The Script with their former No.2 hit The Man Who Can’t Be Moved which slides a place to No.5 after six weeks inside the top five. Norwegian rap duo Madcon’s Beggin’ jumps back up a place to No.6 on its fourth week inside the top ten having moved 7-5-7-6 so far. Kid Rock slides just a place to No.7 with the anthemic country-rock anthem All Summer Long, now spending its ninth consecutive week inside the UK top ten. Scottish trio Biffy Clyro are down three places to No.8 with Mountains, Dizzee Rascal & Calvin Harris slide a place to No.9 with the former chart topper Dance Wiv Me and Wigan rock band The Verve manage the longest running top ten hit of their career, achieving a fifth week up at the top end of the chart with comeback single Love Is Noise down just a place to No.10 this week. The UK top ten this week therefore includes three Brits, three Americans, a Swede, a Norwegian, a Barbadian and an Irish act. There is a relatively high amount of action in the remainder of the top forty this week with an almost unheard of in 2008, seven more entries left in the chart as well as a number of big climbers. The most notable climber is perhaps Disney star Miley Cyrus. Having suggested last week that Disney stars never quite do as well as their hype suggests they should do, the young American star leaps into the top twenty for the first time this week with See You Again, the first release from her new album Breakout, which itself has debuted inside the top ten of the album chart this week. The song, which has already been a top ten hit in America, has had good exposure over here, having been A-listed on Radio 1 for the past few weeks. Whether Miley can go any higher remains to be seen, but a 23-14 climb, the week following the single’s physical release, is a hugely impressive achievement. US band Gym Class Heroes, famed for fusing rock with rap, had two huge hits in the UK last year, Cupid’s Chokehold and Clothes Off, which reached No.3 and No.5 respectively. New single Cookie Jar is the first single from the band’s forthcoming album The Quilt to be released in the UK. Less rock orientated perhaps than previous singles, the more urban sound of this single has gone down well with UK audiences and Cookie Jar goes straight in at No.16 on downloads alone with the prospect of climbing higher next week when the physical is released. Dance artist Steve Mac has had minor chart success in the UK over the years. Lovin’ You More reached No.73 for him in 2005 but new single Paddy’s Revenge is a much bigger success, going straight in at No.17 this week. Out on All Around The World records, it is surely one of the biggest hits of the year for the label that has recently been underperforming singles chart wise. Paddy’s Revenge is an Irish influenced dance-jig hybrid and oddly enough after pointing out last week how unusual it is to see instrumental songs in the chart, this week we have two in the top twenty, Pjanoo and this. The single is due out physically on September 15th so will still have another week charting on downloads with the outside possibility of becoming a future top ten hit. Steve Mac is perhaps best known as a writer and producer for other artists and has apparently been associated with fifty No.1 singles and albums worldwide for artists ranging from Westlife, Leona Lewis, Boyzone, Delta Goodrem and Il Divo. American singer Ne-Yo has had one of the year’s biggest hits with the former No.1 single Closer, and Miss Independent, the second single from new album Year Of The Gentleman, progresses up the chart from its entry point of No.39 last week. It soars to No.18 on its second week inside the top forty and looks set to become another top ten success for the growing star in the coming weeks. Welsh singer Duffy has had an incredible year. She currently has the biggest selling single and album of 2008 in the UK with Mercy and Rockferry respectively whilst follow up single Warwick Avenue went to No.3 and is still in the top forty now. Stepping Stone is the fourth top 75 charting single from the huge album following its title track which reached the top fifty and the two huge singles. Perhaps more subtle than its predecessors and certainly less infectious, Stepping Stone fails to make the top twenty on its physical release week, entering the top forty this week at No.21 having made it to No.49 on downloads alone. Whether it can go any higher remains to be seen, but the next single from Duffy is scheduled to be a new track called Enough Love, part of the soundtrack to an upcoming Simon Pegg film. The track will quite possibly be part of a deluxe re-issue of the album aimed at Christmas shoppers. British indie band Keane’s download only single Spiralling climbs to a new peak of No.23 this week on its fourth week inside the top forty. The energetic, eighties influenced song, from their new album debuted at No.28 a few weeks back before going down as far as No.30 last week, but the album taster track flies up seven places this week after increasing airplay support. Lovers Are Losing, the first official single from Keane’s new album, is due out on October 20th preceded by their third album Perfect Symmetry on October 13th. The fifth new entry to the chart this week goes to emerging British talent Bryn Christopher with Smilin’ at No.31. The soul singer, born in Birmingham in 1985, has been touring all year and his debut album, My World, is out on Monday. Bryn’s first single, The Quest, reached No.45 earlier in the year but the arguably far more commercial Smilin’ which has hints of Gnarls Barkley and David Jordan in it, is the first top forty success for singer. US boy band New Kids On The Block, sometimes abbreviated as NKOTB, made their UK chart debut way back in 1989, their first big hit being the No.1 single You Got It (The Right Stuff) which was Hastily followed by another No.1, Hangin’ Tough. They had a number of other hits but after declining popularity, they split up in 1994. Following many other successful band reunions recently, the five piece reunited earlier in the year to make a new album, The Block, which is due out Monday and Summertime, the comeback single, goes straight in at No.34 this week. The next new entry at No.35 is Handlebars by Flobots. Flobots are an American Rock/Hip Hop band from Denver, Colarado. The seven strong member group have been together since 2000 but only now are they rewarded with their first hit single. The song reached No.37 in the US earlier in the year but looks set to be a considerably bigger hit here, already having beaten that peak on downloads alone. The final new entry is from Artists Stand Up To Cancer or rather a collaboration featuring Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Natasha Bedingfield, Miley Cyrus, Leona Lewis, Carrie Underwood, Keyshia Cole, LeAnn Rimes, Ashanti, Ciara & Mariah Carey. The song has been penned by US producer Babyface and was sung live at the Stand Up To Cancer event in the US on Friday by most of the artists involved. The song is a download only release and goes in at No.39 on downloads alone, although with the calibre of artists involved, it really should be expected to go higher next week. Charity collaboration singles are nothing new although only a few of them dent the chart, the last notable one being Grief Never Grows Old, a song by a group of artists called One World Project that reached No.4 in early 2005. The last pop collaboration was a cover of What’s Going On by Artists Against Aids Worldwide, a collective featuring artists as diverse as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Nelly Furtado, Bono, Darren Hayes and Michael Stipe amongst others. That song reached No.6 in 2001. In a much slower week for albums, The Verve stay in pole position for a second week with comeback album Forth. The Script jump back up a place to No.2 with their eponymous former chart topper whilst Michael Jackson jumps a couple of spots with new hits album King Of Pop, the second top three album of 2008 for the star following the success of the Deluxe Edition of Thriller earlier in the year. Having spent its first week outside the top four last week, Duffy returns to the top five, climbing back up three places to No.4 on her 27th consecutive week inside the top ten with her debut album Rockferry. Rihanna makes another return to the top ten with her former chart topping album Good Girl Gone Bad. The Reloaded edition is up five places to No.5, the highest position that this particular version of the album has reached so far. ABBA’s Gold, a No.1 album in 1992, 1999 and 2008 is a non-mover at No.6 this week as the Mamma Mia film continues to entice audiences two months after its release. Eva Cassidy’s Somewhere dips three places to No.7 this week whilst Slipknot slide six spots with last week’s No.2 album All Hope Is Gone, now at No.8. Coldplay remain top ten but drop a place to No.9 with the former chart topper Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends and the highest new entry goes to Disney star Miley Cyrus who is straight in at No.10 with her first UK release, Breakout. Next week’s chart should be a close battle between Katy Perry and Pussycat Dolls. Whilst I Kissed A Girl is aiming to spend a sixth week at No.1, the physical release of When I Grow Up could give the Dolls enough of an advantage over their nearest rival to give them their third UK chart topper in seven days time. Rihanna, Eric Prydz and The Script should continue their runs at the top end of the chart whilst Ne-Yo, Steve Mac, Various Artists and Miley Cyrus could continue to climb. Notable physical releases are due from Daniel Powter, Elvis vs. Spankox, Flo Rida, Gym Class Heroes, Queen & Paul Rodgers, Sam Beeton, Sigur Ros and Sonny J whilst Cliff Richard will be aiming for his first chart topper of the decade with Woolworths exclusive single Thank You For A Lifetime. McFly will be hoping for a download only top ten hit with Lies, out now to download but not out on physical until the following Monday, a risky strategy for a band who usually simultaneously release their singles physically and digitally for maximum initial impact. The album chart should almost certainly see a new chart topper with Glasvegas and Metallica battling for top honours this time next week, though Metallica’s new album will only have two days worth of sales as it is not released until Friday. Other top 75 new entries can be expected from New Kids On The Block, Sasha, Staind and Bryn Christopher. September 7, 200816 yr The Mercury Awards are on this Tuesday, expect the album chart to give the old albums a boost, I'm not expecting any high new entries in the top 10 of the album chart this week. I think Glasvegas and Metallica might have to settle for top 20 entries. And another jolly good read.

September 8, 200816 yr These two are a guaranteed #1 and #2 this week, with Metallica probably arriving on top. Glasvegas will lead all the way until Friday for sure. I'm getting the general sense they will be in the top 5 now, maybe #1 and #2 Verve sales were pretty low with Metallica on top by Sunday, there isn't that many Mercury nominated albums that can do any damage, apart from the lower end of the top 40

If Metallica and Glasvegas aren't both top 3 in tomorrows mids I'll be very suprised!
September 8, 200816 yr You will be very surprised then... as Metallica isn't out to buy until Friday and therefore won't be in tomorrow's midweeks at all!
September 8, 200816 yr Author You will be very surprised then... as Metallica isn't out to buy until Friday and therefore won't be in tomorrow's midweeks at all! :heehee: although it doesn't matter, Metallica have a big enough fanbase to get them top three on two days sales easily

September 8, 200816 yr :heehee: although it doesn't matter, Metallica have a big enough fanbase to get them top three on two days sales easily I'm really not sure how many of them are used to buying music though, the piracy rate for that genre is like... 99% Again. Its long on a slow chart, i wonder what a commentary on a 2000 chart is! :P
September 9, 200816 yr Author yeah, I had more time to write it this week, I had the weekend off, plus there were 8 new entries! I try and give a big profile to each new entry so in charts with no new songs I find it hard to find much to write sometimes :( perhaps I should do a retro chart commentary of a chart from 2000
