Posted September 21, 200816 yr American rockers Kings Of Leon have easily kept hold of the top spot for a second week with Sex On Fire, which was physically released on Monday. Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl stays at No.2 once again and McFly’s new release, Lies, leaps into the top five to No.4 following its physical release. Kings Of Leon’s Sex On Fire has been one of the more unexpected chart toppers of 2008, but the song, which debuted at the top on downloads last week, stays at No.1 for a second week, with a comfortable lead over Katy Perry. I Kissed A Girl has been one of the year’s biggest hits, and this week marks the eighth week inside the top five for the single, five of those were of course spent at No.1. Katy’s debut album, One Of The Boys, finally receives its official release on Monday having been available on import for the past few weeks. Reviews of the album are mixed but the general consensus is that planned second single Hot ‘N’ Cold should ensure that the American is not a one hit wonder. With Cliff Richard taking his expected slide out of the top ten, although perhaps to a slightly less dramatic than expected No.12, the rest of the top ten is largely inactive. Pussycat Dolls benefit from Cliff’s drop though with comeback single When I Grow Up leaping back up a spot to its peak position of No.3. McFly’s Lies was released on downloads first last week, the first time the British pop band have tried this. It debuted at No.23 and as expected soars into the top five this week following its physical release. It climbs to No.4 and duly becomes their fifteenth consecutive top ten hit, the fourteenth to reach the top five. McFly are of course notorious for their post physical release slumps, and it would be no surprise to find this single outside the top twenty in seven days time. The new album by the band, Radio: ACTIVE, is due out officially on Monday, a smaller version of the album having been given away free with The Mail On Sunday in July. Rihanna’s Disturbia is a non-mover at No.5 this week, although with the song climbing back to No.2 on iTunes towards the end of the week, it could find itself higher again next week. With the single being hindered by a mysterious midweek iTunes deletion on its physical release week, it looked as if Cookie Jar by Gym Class Heroes would not become the top ten hit that it had looked destined to become. However, with a full week of download and physical sales under its belt, the new single from the American hip-hop/rock band leaps six places to No.6. It is the third top ten in just over a year for Travis McCoy and his band; the huge airplay hit Cupid’s Chokehold peaked at No.3, whilst its follow up, Clothes Off, reached No.5 a few months later. Both of those singles featured guest vocals from Fall Out Boy singer Patrick Stump, Cookie Jar’s guest vocals come from fellow American artist The Dream. Norwegian duo Madcon’s Frankie Valli cover Beggin’ continues to yo-yo around the mid-region of the top ten. The song, previously a huge hit across the rest of Europe, has moved 7-5-7-6-8-7 in its first six weeks on the chart, clearly continuing to pick up fans as each week passes. Meanwhile, Irish trio The Script slide a spot with the former No.2 single The Man Who Can’t Be Moved. The song has spent eight weeks inside the top ten now. The next new song reaching the top ten this week comes courtesy of American singer Ne-Yo. Miss Independent has had fairly steady upwards progress over the last few weeks, moving 39-18-14-9. Though it does not look as if it will have the chart topping power of its predecessor Closer, it is nonetheless Ne-Yo’s fifth UK top ten hit following So Sick, Sexy Love, Because Of You and Closer. Rounding off the top ten is Will Young’s long awaited comeback single Changes which goes straight in at No.10 on downloads alone. A mid-tempo song in the same vein as Leave Right Now, the single should go higher next week when it receives its physical release, but for now it is Pop Idol winner Will’s first UK hit since 2006’s No.11 single Who Am I. Will’s biggest selling single to date is of course his winning Pop Idol double a-side Evergreen/Anything Is Possible, that sold close to two million copies in 2002 and is by far the biggest selling single of the decade. His 2003 No.1 Leave Right Now is perhaps his best remembered single though, and for many, one of the classic singles of the noughties. The UK’s top ten this week is therefore dominated by American artists with five US acts, one Norwegian, one Barbadian, one Irish act and just two British acts. The top forty is home to a few big climbers, high profile new entries and potential future hits this week. American alternative rock act Iglu & Hartly made their chart entrance last week with In This City. Following the physical release of the single, it jumps seven places into the top twenty this week, now a No.14 hit. The next new entry goes to American female singer Jennifer Hudson. The R&B singer was a participant on the third series of American Idol where she finished seventh, to the surprise of much of America who felt that she could win. Since 2004 she has become a much bigger star in the US and won a number of prestigious awards for her acting role in the film Dreamgirls. A song that Jennifer sung in the film, And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going, was very highly regarded worldwide. Her first UK top forty hit is Spotlight, and despite relatively limited support from many radio stations, the single makes a hugely impressive debut, going straight in at No.15 on downloads alone and looking likely to move into the top ten next week, although it could be hindered by the fact that is is receiving no physical release. Basshunter’s new single Angel In The Night follows its huge 54-24 climb with a slightly less stellar two place rise to No.22 this week. With the single seemingly having slowed down, it now looks less likely that it will give the Swede a third consecutive top ten single. MIA’s Paper Planes jumps up the chart in its second week inside the top forty. Already a huge top five hit in the US, it looks as if it might well replicate that success here as it leaps fourteen places from No.37 to No.23 this week. The release of Ne-Yo’s album Year Of The Gentleman helps out the former No.1 single Closer. The song, which has now sold over 300,000 copies in the UK, moves back up a place to No.26 this week on its twentieth week inside the top forty. Also benefitting from a fairly slow chart, British singer Taio Cruz moves back up a place to No.30 with the former top twenty hit, She’s Like A Star. American rapper Jay-Z returns to the top forty with new single Swagga Like Us which features T.I., Lil’ Wayne and Kanye West. The song, which samples MIA’s current chart hit Paper Planes, is a new entry at No.33 on download sales. With this song at No.5 in the US this week, it marks a huge week for MIA, with the song that Swagga Like Us is based on one place above at No.4. Take That’s Rule The World was a huge No.2 success late last year. It stayed at No.2 for four weeks; despite selling almost 100,000 copies in one week, it was halted by Leona Lewis’ huge No.1 single Bleeding Love, that cleared over 200,000 sales in the same week. Having featured in a couple of TV shows recently, including X Factor, the single makes a top forty re-appearance this week, re-entering at No.34. No other single in the British male group’s illustrious career has had as much staying power as Rule The World, this week marks its twenty-fourth appearance inside the top forty in total. The next of this week’s new hits is Everything Is Borrowed by The Streets at No.37. The title track from the new album by Mike Skinner, it is the first official single to be taken from the album. One of the most successful artists of the decade, The Streets have had two UK No.1 albums and a No.1 single in 2004 with the lad-ballad Dry Your Eyes. There are a couple of other songs leaping right into the end of the top forty this week. Having had major success this year with the top ten singles With You, Forever and No Air, Chris Brown’s 2007 single Kiss Kiss was reactivated and ends up a place lower than its original peak after its second physical release. It is a re-entry to the chart at No.39. He has performed better than American singer Colbie Caillat though. The Californian female singer-songwriters debut single Bubbly has been a huge hit worldwide over the past year and was, like Chris Brown’s single, physically re-released this week, but could only reach No.58, although this is an improvement on its 2007 peak of No.72. Rounding off the top forty is another download entry, I Don’t Care, the comeback single from US rockers Fall Out Boy. The popular quartet have been huge over the past two and a half years, their biggest hit being last year’s No.2 success This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race. Their download only standalone single Beat It, a Michael Jackson cover, reached No.21 earlier in the year but spent an impressive eighteen weeks inside the top seventy-five. I Don’t Care should go much higher in the coming weeks, making the top forty already despite not yet having a music video. The album chart sees no change at the top as US rockers Metallica stay in control after the first full week of sales for new album Death Magnetic. American singer Ne-Yo tops off a very good week with a debut at No.2 with new album Year Of The Gentleman. It is his biggest hit album so far in the UK, his debut album In My Own Words reached No.14 whilst Because Of You peaked at No.6 last year. Ne-Yo’s former duet partner Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad is a non-mover this week at No.3 and Duffy’s Rockferry spends an incredible twenty ninth consecutive week inside the top ten and climbs back up a place to No.4. The Cosmos Rocks, the first studio album by Queen that features new vocalist Paul Rodgers, debuts at No.5 whilst Glasvegas’ eponymous debut slips to No.6 this week. The Streets go in at No.7 with fourth album Everything Is Borrowed and Elbow’s The Seldom Seen Kid is down a place to No.8. The Script dip to No.9 with their eponymous former No.1 album, and another former chart topper, Forth by The Verve, is down six places to No.10 this week. In next week’s chart Kings Of Leon will look to stay at No.1 for a third week with Sex On Fire whilst Katy Perry, Pussycat Dolls and Rihanna should keep them company at the top end of the chart. Will Young should climb with his physical single due out whilst other notable physical releases are due from Avenue, Flobots, Ironik, James Morrison, Jonas Brothers and Saint Etienne. Download entries can be expected from Kanye West, Sugababes, Camp Rock soundtrack songs, Alicia Keys & Jack White and Faith Hill’s There You’ll Be, massively regaining popularity thanks to the X Factor. Metallica will almost certainly be replaced at No.1 in the album chart by current singles chart toppers Kings Of Leon, who will be hoping to do the double next week with Only By The Night. Other big releases are due from Pussycat Dolls, McFly, Katy Perry, David Gilmour, Ladyhawke and Elvis vs. Spankox. September 21, 200816 yr Thanks Gooddelta. Fab read every week, even though I don't always post in this thread. :)
September 21, 200816 yr Beggin' was originally by the Four Seasons. Frankie Valli was not a solo act at that time. No Americans thought that Jennifer Hudson would win American Idol. Yes, people thought she would last longer than 7th, but the favourite was always Fantasia Barrino, with Diana DiGarmo second. Also, I've talked to many people and none of them liked her cover of And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going. Everyone prefers Jennifer Holliday. Regarding the cancelled CD single for Spotlight, doesn't the trend seem to be that most American artists aren't releasing CD or vinyl singles? I know there are exceptions (like Madonna). I hope the British artists continue to release them.

Yes, you could be right about the US trend of cancelling singles, I hear Michelle Williams' physical is cancelled too
