Simon Cowell and X Factor bosses are reportedly planning to make all of this year’s X Factor live performances available for download after the show has aired. According to tabloid reports Cowell is hoping to release up to 16 songs a week from October, all of which would eligible to chart in the UK Top 40.

Similar talent shows in Germany and the States already make tracks performed by the contestants available to download, although their impact on the chart is minimal.

An X Factor insider said: “Simon is determined to make this year’s show the biggest and the best yet. And he knows the best way to do that is by making each week’s live performances available for fans to download.

“The X Factor could potentially have the number one spot every week for more than three months.”

A source told the Daily Star: “There’s talk of having 16 finalists this time around instead of 12. And even when it gets down to the end of the show, the singers perform twice, making more songs available for fans.

“It would make it incredibly hard for any new acts to have an impact on the charts.

“Even the major artists would think twice about releasing singles in the lucrative run-up to Christmas.”

The insider added: “Simon knows it would make The X Factor an even bigger machine than it is at the moment. The danger is it could start an out-and-out war with people boycotting the show.”

The X Factor returns to television screens later this month.

It wouldn't surprise me, American Idol have been doing it a good 2 or 3 years. Simon likes to copy. But the worst thing about this, is the fact they're eligible to chart (unlike the American Idol performances (I Think)).

I don't think AI are allowed to chart, but then the US charts work slightly different to ours with airplay being involved, which I can't see any of the performances getting.

I think this will be true, but I don't see them being eligible. I mean if Glee can get 2 or 3 tracks in the top 40 a week and is watched by ~1m, how much would a show watched by ~15m get? It would be total takeover.

It's funny, because someone used this as an April Fools' joke here this year. I might try and find the thread if I get bored.

To be honest, Simon has done the right thing. I really can't understand why this didn't happen earlier.

But is this actually true? Are there any other sources bringing this news?

Also, I wouldn't compare it to the Glee tracks, because they're, in general, far better than the X Factor live performances.

EDIT: Maybe it's true.

TBH, I don't think most will make much impact, given how crap they are. :P

Also, they aren't going to sell enough in 3 hours on Saturday to chart, and their sales will surely fade rapidly through the following week.

Probably. Some of the performances can be good, but they're usually just the instrumental of a song, with poorer vocals over the top, and a lot of the song cut out, which isn't nice. If they were doing more sophisticated mashups and stuff (like in the style of Halo/Walking on Sunshine, You Got the Dirtee Love, etc.), I think they'd sell better, as it'll seem newer, and will not have really been heard before.

If it did go to the extreme, and the whole of the top 10 was X Factor songs, there'd be weekly facebook petitions and such to "save" music, which means putting "proper" music at the top of the charts (i.e. old rock music ). There's no way people would just sit there and watch X Factor take over the charts. There's a bigger anti-X Factor scene in the UK than we might think.

X Factor's a pain in the ass. First they take over Christmas Number 1, and now this. They shouldn't be elegable to chart, it would be just wrong if they did.

This was inevitable, but I don't think it will dominate the charts in the way it is predicted. Glee has a smaller audience, but a high proportion of that audience is iTunes savvy, and the Glee versions of songs are well thought out, rehearsed, recorded and auto-tuned. And a proper length.

However, songs used in the show do get a boost, so it makes sense that Cowell would want a piece of that action too, but it might prove to be more difficult to get rights to release music that has been edited with the intention of releasing it. It will also make it much plainer which artists are likely to sell - to a download audience at least, but as useful at that market research may be to Syco, he does risk really annoying the rest of the industry. I'm still convinced it was the dreadful charity single that encouraged so many people to join the RATM campaign, and while the competition might boost sales in the short term, it will make it harder for the acts that come from the shows to get respect once they've left.

Hopefully common sense will prevail over greed and they'll hold off on releasing any recordings to iTunes until the latter stages of the live shows, and perhaps the group numbers. Apart from anything else, most of the finalists will repeat a song that they did earlier in the competition, and the second version is always much better than from the first time around.

This definitely is not true. American Idol sell the tracks but they are not eligible to chart as they do not want to give away the winner. Do you really think X Factor is going to want to reveal the winner if the same contestant gets to number one every week? It will remove the tension and the build up in the final.
I'm sure they will do this. Even if they are I doubt the covers would make much impact anyway. Most people would just buy the original (I would hope anyway) if they were new to the song. There would probably only be 1 or 2 a week (if that) which break the top 40.

If it follows the pattern of the USA, he won't make the tracks chart eligible or let them appear in the iTunes Top 100 rundown until AFTER the final.

This is because:

  • He doesn't want viewers knowing which artist is likely to win.
  • The sales data will be available to Simon & co, so they'll know which artists are worth saving, etc.
However, in the week after the final (Xmas #1 week), it's likely to be an X-Factor lockout in the Top 10

It should also be noted, the tracks that have been available to download on iTunes after the US shows have been studio recordings by the contestants. You only get the live version on the night if you purchase the video.

We should have a different FB campaign every single week to stop them!

Though I'm inclined to agree with Vidcapper that they will surely fade after an initial three hour or so boost onj Saturday night. Though I imagine, they'd all be released on Sunday at midnight and a lot of people watch the repeat showing on Sunday morning so....

It's just horrific :( I don't mind Glee because [a] I like that show & they have about 12x less the amount of viewers the fiX Factor gets, so their songs barely made an impact.

Cowell already controls every #1 single/album in some form or another between October & December. Does he really need any more monopolisation? He obviously wants to get as much cash as possible bcause he gets nothing from when people download the original versions.

I don't even think it is about the money for Cowell anymore he already has more than he could ever spend it is now all about the power. He has already held number 1 twice this year twice with utter $h!te (Haiti and Shout).

There is no way these will chart tho as a previous poster stated as there is no way they will let on who is going to win. If there is a run away winner do you really think the final ratings will be high.

As proven last year there are more X Factor haters than likers so the Christmas number 1 is safe for as long as this tripe continues.

I hope they don't chart - X Factor dominates the chart around that time of year. We'll have the winner's song, a charity single, an internet campaign, all songs that have been promoted by artists AND all the live performances by contestants. Overload. So if you don't perform on X Factor, you probably won't get a deserved position chart wise.

money grabbing twat.

R.I.P the music industry.

Great idea to have the performances available ala Idol. They also record studio versions of the song every week.

Having them eligible to chart though, I dunno. It sort of gives the game away. But if you look at the phone in results of previous competitions it isn't always obvious who the front runner is as things to switch around a bit.
