Wasn't the Series 5 final on the saturday when Alex won - so she had 2 days worth of download sales [sunday and Monday] in the 1st mids compared to Matt's 1 as his final was on the sunday

Simon Cowell is not 'smart' at all. He is an arch manipulator, & exploiter.

He's only as 'clever' & 'knowing' as people allow him to be. That is those

who buy into 'The X Factor' hype, & throw money at Simon, via the Votes.

Votes that Cowell ignores, whenever he feels like it - ensuring that he

keeps the Voters cash, of course. (Then the Voters hand him their cash

again, the next Week, & so on - LOL!).

The truth is, that he has no imagination whatsoever - being behind 2 of the

UK's No.1 versions of 'Unchained Melody' - because he likes the Song. When

he knew that it had already been No.1 in 1955, & 1990.

Sadly, very few UK Acts can actually have consistent Global Top 10 Hits,

these Days. Even Leona was unable to sustain her first few Years of huge

success. She may still be huge again. It depends what she comes back with.

As for Matt - I think he's probably the best Male 'X Factor' Winner, but I think

that his voice is more suited to slow Songs, than for up-tempo ones. We will see

how long he lasts. It depends how well his 2nd Album sells. Cowell makes his

decision, 'To drop them or not', on the Sales of Album 2. (As has been evident

for Years).

I thought Matt Cardle physicals would be available from Wednesday, but there's a big rack in HMV (Newbury of all places).

More days of physical sales means more sales!

Really? I suppose they get them in stock today but not supposed to put them out till tomorrow - who cares though! I'm intrigued to go to my HMV now and see if its there - but I've already ordered it online, so can't really be bothered

You can't compare it like that though Britster, as Alex had 2 days sales compared with Matt's one day sale.

Although I agree, equally its incorrect to compare the 112k figure directly with the 105k figure, not least because they are from different sales climates (2008 Alexandra vs. 2010 Matt) but also because being available all day Sunday (Alexandra) is more beneficial than all day Monday (Matt)

Erm, you then go on to disprove your own point!!!! :-

LOL at JLS

Yes, let's LOL @ the group who have the most no.1s of any X factor act (4) and who have a million selling album  Also, don't forget that their new album is selling well too

I completely forgot about that

I think that Matt is good too. But, for the 2nd Year in a row, we have

an 'X Factor' Winner's Song, that was a Hit for someone else earlier in

the SAME Year. Showing yet again that Simon Cowell has no imagination

whatsoever.

As for the hype, about how many Matt will sell this Week, & how big

he will be etc.

Let us remember - in 2002, Will Young came 1st in 'Pop Idol', & sold

1 Million copies in a Week, of 'Anything Is Possible/Evergreen'. He had

quite a good Career, but his huge Sales days are quite a way in the

past now.

Gareth Gates was 2nd in the same, (2002), 'Pop Idol', & he sold

800,000 - in a Week - of his Cover of 'Unchained Melody'. He too

had quite a good Career. He too has long been unable to have

big Sales. Indeed, I'm not even sure if he still has a Record Contract.

Leona Lewis has been the only truly Global Act from 'The X Factor', &

even she is not certain of having huge Sales of her 3rd Album - seeing

as her 2nd, ('Echo'), had no-where near as much success as her 1st

Album, 'Spirit'.

We see the same thing every Year - someone Wins 'The X Factor', &

some people start going on, as if the Winner, is going to be as big as

The Beatles, or something. (Far too many people get caught up in the

hype. Cowell says that he reckons One Direction can be big in the

USA, 'Like The Beatles'. The Man clearly knows nothing about Music

One Direction can't even Sing, & they will mostly only be doing Covers,

anyhow).

I wouldn't say that! As Let It Snow said, not every artist can sell the same amount as his big/debut album!

Will Young had a really good career!

From Now On (2002): 2x Platinum

Friday's Child (2003): 4x Platinum

Keep On (2005): 3xPlatinum

Let It Go (2008): Platinum

The Hits (2009): Platinum

10 Top 10 singles, including 4 n1!

Girls Aloud also had a good career! 3 Platinum, 2 2x Platinum and a 3x Platinum album and 20 consecutive Top 10 hits in the last 8 years!

Those realities/talent shows give the opportunity to some talented (or not) people to make their impact in the music industry! Beyond the show, it's on the artist's hand (and record labels) if he will make a good career or not!

Totally agree those with talent will continue to excel and do well and sadly there will always be those that cannot stay the course.I am no Simon fan but as Matt Cardle stated he is one of those acts like Leona and Alexandra who have been playing clubs, pubs, parties and events for years without making real inroads in the industry. The British music industry is a closed shop to certan acts so people can hardly begrude people if they take part in talent competitons. Sheena Easton, Jennifer Hudson, Joss Stone, Destinys Child and Kelly Clarkson all went down this route and are all credible acts.

So very true.

I would just change had for has in Will's case. Still playing to 10,000 crowds this summer after almost 10 years in the business says to me he is still enjoying success as an established artist, though I doubt he'll ever trouble the singles chart again.

Yep my mistake. I meant had a really good career so far. Thanks for the correction :)

YES. Absolutely fantastic for Rihanna  If the facebook campaigns prevent her from getting the number 2 Christmas slot in the single I will cry! Mega pleased for the album too!

It kills me to think that some awful 60s song that got used on Family Guy once actually has a chance of selling more than the Queen of Pop that is Rihanna.

Anyway I'd like to see Rihanna at number one in the new year, I think Matt will hold his position for at least 2-3 weeks.

Get in Corey Taylor! :D

In terms of reality TV acts, does anyone else think the X Factor is in a way TOO big and dominant to create lasting stars? It comes back stronger every year and it's difficult to maintain success with some drop-off rate. Leona hit really big when the show wasn't as big as it is today but even she saw a horrible second album lull (yes I know it went 2x platinum but any album that sells a fifth of its predecessor can be called an underachiever).

The most successful act from a reality show is surely Girls Aloud - they've been around for a good eight years now, consistently spawned hits and created one of the biggest solo artists in the country. The show they came from lasted for one series and wasn't as big as the X Factor, and they were well managed by Xenomania. These count for far more than winning in front of an audience of 15+ million people as Joe McElderry has found out. Cher could well be the biggest medium-term commercial success of this series because, like Diana Vickers, she established a core fanbase on the show and after finishing fourth not that much is expected of her.

I would think Rihanna's a lock for #2.

Trashmen has to not only catch up to her, but stay ahead. I don't see that happening.

I think last year's campaign was more successful as 'The Climb' seemed like a bit of a mickey take by Simon Cowell.

I think thats the problem though - I honestly assumed it would be rivaling a top 3 album place what with their own TV show on Saturday night, whenever anyone else has had their own ITV1 show - sales fly - look at Take That, Cheryl Cole, Girls Aloud and Michael Buble. I just find it odd, that one of the biggest boybands in the country hasn't benefitted much from their own show. I didn't expect it to drop. Unless it has benefitted and they were looking to drop out of the top 10 this week had the TV show not been on. Love You More has dropped alot too considering.

On another note - does anyone know the longest stay at #1 for an album is? With Take That looking certain for a 5th week, I can see them staying for the rest of the year, maybe getting up to 7 weeks?

Maybe it was on too early in the evening?

Plus, the bad weather in previous weeks may mean more ppl were out shopping this weekend.

Just a thought ...
