At least What's My Name? got top 10 on its own merit. It hasn't only suddenly entered the top 10 because someone covered it on X Factor (Biffy Clyro...).

You could argue that it rose to #2 because of the XF though ;)

Since the 60s it has been viewed as the big prize in the chart year (not sure why it started, as I wasn't around then!). This is why it is so important to the general consciousness of the public as i it the one time in the year when the general public have an interest in the charts. until last year, the X Factor had removed all of the debate about who would be xmas #1 and this was/is such a huge shame.

 

We are talking about bands. Since I can remember xmas number 1 is total commercialism. Its always been the pop acts that go for this number one. Not your "respected" acts so doesnt matter who it is. Its gonna be slated anyway by the media and critucs so why do people care so much

Hurts are amazing, but they can't get Radio 1 support, because they are British.

I think this list proves the point that it was interesting before XF - Westlife tried and failed, Gordon haskell was a genuine xmas hit, Sacred Trust flopped against GA, The Darkness was part of a HUGE year of xmas chart interest (and this is widely acknowledged!), for Ronan, see Westlife, Nizlopi was a genuine hit from nowhere..........

 

I dont think it proves anything except that the number 1 that year stopped $h!te from being number 1 thankfully. Dont blame Simon Cowell for giving the public what they want. Blame the gullible british public

But you can't condemn all those amazing songwriters to the dustbin, just because they can't sing !

 

They need someone to sing their songs !

Well then we need the singers to be ARTISTS and have a say on their direction hence why I mentioned Kylie who was someone who was a manufactured product. When she got a deal to release Light Years she was doing things HER way. SHE wanted to do Spinning Around, SHE wanted the gold hot pants etc. :lol: She also had a hand in writing some of the songs as well, as in actually writing some of them and not like a word to try and seem 'credible'.

 

If Kylie was still a manufactured artist she would have been gone LONG ago because SAW would make her stick to the same dirge. Btw I know she had albums before that where she tried to have a bit of say but the record company did control her a little there.

 

Will Young is another example, decided he didn't want to do a load of covers but Gareth Gates didn't have the balls to do that (after he was dropped he did but that didn't work for him like it does for a lot of people) but well.. look who remained popular for longer after pop idol!

You are completely missing the point. People are talking about the RACE for Christmas number one, not the quality of the songs themselves. You know, sometimes you can get excitement out of a good chart battle even if you don't like the music.

 

And X Factor hasn't just ruined the Xmas #1. It's ruined the entire chart. Seriously, Matt Cardle at #1, Trashmen at #3, Biffy Clyro at #8, Take That back up to #6 as a product of X Factor, John Cage #21, Corey Taylor #37. Then Rihanna all over the place. All of these are to do with X Factor, directly or indirectly. Not to mention the yearly spurt of Mariah and The Pogues, and then all the overplayed songs that people still insist on downloading as the chart moves so slowly nowadays. Is it any wonder nobody competes anymore? Like I said, downloads and X Factor have worked together to pretty much kill any race. It's just a joke now.

 

Nowadays people get their releases out of the way by the end of November, and then December is pretty much dead. Some might wait until after the Christmas battle (late December) but either way they all avoid Christmas week and the week before like the plague. And thus there's no battle.

 

I think soon we'll probably end up like any other country, where the Xmas chart is just like any other week in the year...

See, I don't know any of this about Kylie. I like some of her songs, and hate some of them. There's probably songs I like and dislike from each album, and I'm not going to pretend I hate a Kylie song that I actually love because Kylie didn't write any of it. Likewize, I'm not going to like a song that Kylie wrote part of, unless it's actually good.
