Ricky Wilson (Kaiser Chiefs) just joked on twitter: "Adele has named her new album 'The Future is Medieval'. Pick up a copy today!"

By how, I meant how in terms of it never getting above #5 on iTunes for about a week and now out of the top five.

I can only assume that #3-5 are incredibly close and his physical sales/other download sites are hauling him above the others.

The A Team has 2 versions within the top 100 on itunes - so I guess the lower version is propping up the entry at 5 just above the others - but still close as sales suggest

So Price Tag currently outselling Someone Like You for the first time in 20 weeks! Not sure if that will last though.

But as everyone says iTunes is 48 hours, so surely her being number 4 at midnight means that she's sold more than all bar the top 3 songs over the previous 48 hours, which was the start of Sunday?

I think that just proves that it's NOT 48 hours rolling chart. I think it's either 36h or 24h rolling chart.

There's been several examples in the past that show it most likely is 48 hours - saying this case is conclusive evidence that it isn't is like denying global warming because we're having a crap summer.

I still can't decide, because if it IS a 48 hour chart, something funny underlying the mechanism is going on because Beyonce should be #4 or higher in today's mids (based on her iTunes position) if she's selling the same on other download sites as she is on iTunes.

Maybe its not a linear scale?

Some people are thinking that there is iTunes data missing though, which could very well be the case.

If iTunes it is a 48 hour chart it definitely isn't linear - i.e. there is a higher weighting on more recent sales. There are many examples which prove this - eg sometimes songs start falling before they have even been out for 48 hours, which would be impossible if the weighting was equal. Also I think the weighting on the last few hours must be very high - for instance if something is performed on X factor it tends to climb very quickly, and it wouldn't if the effect was phased in linearly over the chart's timeframe.

I would love to find out for definite how the chart is made up - do they keep it that much of a secret?

I agree with this.

how fantastic to see Coldplay taking over   although I think by Sunday, Fix You would've fallen out and the two b-sides obviously will disappear, although the higher version of ETIAW is still climbing so it could even get a new peak :w00t:

32k is good first day sales for Beyonce, bit of a flop for the Kaisers though :o

I hadn't considered this - this seems likely, it is definitely 48 hours as there is more than enough evidence for this, but a weighting towards recent sales would explain oddities like Beyoncé.

How is Ed Sheeran back to #3?

He has two versions in the iTunes top 100 which combined put him just ahead of Bounce, plus his EP is still #24 on iTunes Albums and he'll have some physical sales too. If anything I'm surprised he's got such a small lead! Hopefully he'll stay top 5 this week, it just needs to stay ahead of Calvin and Pitbull. Beyoncé will definitely overtake obviously and Coldplay probably will too when factoring in their missing physical sales. (Plus ETIAW has just gone top 10 again on iTunes so will hopefully get some top 10 effect!)

I think it will be higher than SLY this week, but this is just because it's been boosted by Glasto remember. SLY will probably re-overtake pretty quickly.

Anyway, quite a lot going on in the midweeks for a change.

First and foremost, COLDPLAY INVASION :cheer: :w00t: :yahoo: In My Place and Fix You are both much higher than I expected them to be today, the latter will definitely drop out by Sunday but hopefully the former can cling on what with its live version. Also brilliant to see ETIAW comfortably top 10 again, hopefully they can manage a new peak (#4 or #5) when factoring in the separated physical sales :D And I definitely didn't expect to see all 4 of their albums in the top 40 :o At least one will probably drop out by Sunday though. I really hope they can manage 7 singles top 100 entries this week with the 3 top 40 plus VLV, Yellow, The Scientist and Clocks - the first three look likely to go top 100 but Clocks could go either way. Major Minus and Moving To Mars are also top 100 on iTunes now but I highly doubt they'll go top 100 officially (I know they're both top 20 today but that's obviously an error )

Now that rant is over, I'm also pleased about the following things:

  • Irreplaceable being comfortably top 40 again
  • 21 clinging onto #2, was worried it'd stay behind GaGa but if she's down 45.6% Adele probably has quite a sizeable lead, given her sales aren't exactly falling that quickly. So she should easily match Carpenters' 23 weeks in the top 2 :cheer:
  • 19 back up to #4 :o
  • Biffy Clyro somehow being top 10 with a completely unpublicised live album :o Hopefully they'll stay top 10 although they probably won't (then again I said the same about The Prodigy's live album regarding the top 5 and that held on at #5 in the end!)
  • Mumford & Sons back in the top 15, hopefully they can get back in the top 10 by Sunday, it'd be their 33rd week top 10 if they do get back in :o

Not happy about Two Door Cinema Club somehow falling though!

Wow she's done incredibly. Would love these positions to stay like that the whole week - although obviously I want BTINH to go top 5 and DD to go top 20.

This makes sense. It always confused me when tracks started falling like 24 hours after release, because that'd be impossible if the sales were equally weighted and it was a 48 hour chart.
