Only 12 people watch BB these days, and they probably already have it.

I'm so happy to see Cannonball so high! I loved it back in 2004 and was mystified to why it never charted higher. Such an amazing song and deserved success. Something X Factor has finally done right.

Its peak in 2004 was at least better than its original peak in 2003 :P But it's fantastic to see it looking like finally getting a peak it deserves. And hopefully it'll hang around for a while instead of re-peaking and vanishing (like Back To Black did but for completely different reasons)

...so people think that just because it's climbed pretty quikcly that it's gong to go to number 1.

guys. this has happened MANY times before. 'hurt', 'make you feel my love', 'fast car', etc all did the same and none of those reached number 1. this will follow the same pattern.

I'm confused. Why is it a crime to increase sales by more than 5%?

It wasn't that its sales increased by 5%, it had outperformed the market by 5%

The rule was introduced to stop the chart filling with old singles which retailers had slashed the price of re-entering

As it turned out it was a mistake IIRC because it should never have dropped out of the top 40 in the first place so the rule wouldn't have affected it

Yes I knew that. But to me it always seemed like a top 10 hit that never was. I hope it will make it this time (although now I've said that it'll slide down itunes after tomorrow and end up 11 officially or something  )

one person said that.....

Wow :o I didn't see X Factor yet as I was at work but I'm always surprised when some song suddenly becomes the hit it always should have been thanks to one of these shows. Cannonball is brilliant, I gave it quite a few points in its respective year in the recent Record of the Decade competition but not many others did :(

With both Make You Feel My Love and Fast Car most people assumed it'd fall very quickly after going top 5 on iTunes but they managed to stay fairly buoyant through the week and ended up staying #4 overall despite starting to fall quite a bit in the tail end of the week. I'll stick my neck out and say the same will happen with 'Cannonball' although with it ending up #5 or #6 instead (behind Dappy, One Direction, Maroon 5, Pixie Lott and maybe Jason Derülo)

would love 'O' to re-enter, its been lowly priced for aaaages so may get new music fans into it.
Well X Factor is repeated on Sunday afternoons so there's a good chance 'Cannonball' will get another boost after tomorrow's repeat. Plus it's on ITV2 iirc during the week. Have any of the contestants ended up being interviewed on programmes like This Morning? Imagine this lad went on Daybreak on Monday morning and they show his audition, that's another 1k downloads.

'O' is #13 on the albums feed. If only it was '9' instead a fifth of the top 25 would be numerically titled (and there are two versions of an album called + as well, so 7/25 would have no letters in their titles).

'9' is only #257 for the record.

Quick and totally unnecessary Damien Rice rank:

01 9 Crimes

02 Amie

03 The Blower's Daughter

04 Eskimo

05 Cannonball

06 Unplayed Piano

07 Cold Water

08 Delicate

09 The Animals Were Gone

10 Older Chests

 for all of them though...

9 Crimes is an absolutely stunning record. It was never going to be a hit single but nevertheless...
Unplayed Piano and The Blower's Daughter were also great, the latter could probably be a similar sized smash with an X Factor performance too to be honest, it's got about as much 'classic status' as Cannonball.

my damien rice top 10 would be:

1. The Blower's Daughter

2. Amie

3. Unplayed Piano

4. Woman Like A Man

5. Cannonball

6. Eskimo

7. Accidental Babies

8. 9 Crimes

9. The Professor & La Fille Danse

10. Everything You're Not Supposed To Be (with Melanie Laurent)

Wow wow wow Cannonball #4, I saw it just now and was like what! Amazing. Cannot actually believe that it only peaked at #19 when released, #19? Not good enough, hopefully can stay top 5 all week, if not top 10 would still be incredible!

Also

#79 - Run

#108 - All The Man That I Need

Run was only used in the background after the lady sang All The Man That I Need but Run is higher :heehee: I love a little Run boost :P

Fake Loca People at #26 :o Shouldnt they just release tomorrow?

Body & Soul  #38

You and I  #40

Heart On My Sleeve (Olly) #98, used in X Factor?

Well, when he said he was singing Cannonball, I thought 'He does look like the type who'd sing it'. And it is one of those tracks. It might be the MORish aspect, but I mean in a good way. I'd like to say it has high elasticity (business term), but that's not quite the same. What I mean is, it'll get more sales from a performance than the average song would. Like MYFML. Whereas something like Avril's Smile gets very few sales after a performance compared to an average song, so that's inelastic.

But then that's normally used for price changes, not volume of sales. Someone more skilled at economics will come along and tell me I'm getting my terms wrong.

As someone who isn't really skilled in economics but is doing it for a level, I can see sort of where you're coming from, but I believe you may have phrased unintentionally in the wrong way. I think what you mean is that the song could get more sales due to it being able to appeal to a larger market.

This could be because while Avril Lavigne is a well known artist who has had a few successful albums and is more current compared to Damien Rice and has been able to build a fanbase so most of the "market" that the avril lavigne song is suitable or has been marketed for will have already got it.

However, with an artist like Damien Rice who had one successful era and whose songs are as you said more MOR and not as current, a song like cannonball will be able to sell more because firstly, a performance will introduce a new generation of music buyers to Cannonball. Also the fact that O was a successful and critically well received album means that people will be tempted to buy songs from it as they will be tempted to listen to and judge so-called critically great music. Also, with Damien Rice being from the so-called singer songwriter genre, more people won't know him than with avril and this means they will be able to judge the song and they will buy the song just based on the fact it's a good song and not that it is by their favourite artist.

Ah, I didn't realise Run was top 100 as well. Good to see that getting another boost but I wish it was the Snow Patrol version which is far better, it's a shame 'Run' will probably end up being associated with Leona by future generations if it's remembered at all :(
