I think we know who won now

Edited by T Boy

 48. Stereo Hearts (feat. Adam Levine) - Gym Class Heroes

 78. Pass At Me - Timbaland (also #109)

 92. Forever (Radio Edit) - Wolfgang Gartner (Extended Mix #455)

Not to throw fuel onto the fire here, and I KNOW opinions are subjective but I just can't understand how Pass At Me made it onto the Radio 1 b-list. Why was it not laughed out of the room at the playlist committee meeting? Some cheap dated beats with 'ole ole ole oh oh my god' muttered over the top every few seconds is what the audience wants to hear is it?

It's not by somebody new or British either, so the Cher Lloyd/Matt Cardle/whoever argument doesn't work here - especially when quite a few times they've actively ignored Pitbull! I can only assume that it's been supported because of the David Guetta connection.

He got playlisted because he's Timbaland, one of the most influential people in mainstream music over the past 20 years. He's like Lady Gaga, Coldplay, etc. who would just get playlisted whatever they put out, because he's so big (in more than one way ).

The reason his song sounds like that is because he's trying to stay current. If none of you have noticed this yet, you realize Timbaland's music would simply not sell in 2011 (it usually contains drums, syncopation, off-beats, etc.). His usual music isn't generic enough to sell in 2011, but he has made an effort to make a song that has a vague chance at success this year (which is why it sounds so dreadful, but most of the biggest hits this year do aswell, that's the point). The part David Guetta contributed to the song are the synths (obviously, since that's all the man knows how to do, he has lots of hits, but he's a one-trick pony, same formula in each one). It's also why he's chosen a dreadful rapper, who's all about flow and zero about lyrics (Pitbull), rather than the rappers he used to have on his songs (e.g. Jay-Z, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Kanye West, etc.), because rappers like LMFAO and Pitbull are the ones that have success in 2011.

The songs of his that everybody used to love a couple of years ago (Say It Right, Ayo Technology, The Way I Are, 4 Minutes, Give It to Me, etc), he CAN still make music like that (it was only last year when If We Ever Meet Again, which everybody on here LOVES was released), but he isn't, because he's not stupid and he knows the public wouldn't like them anymore, and they'd have zero commercial success at the moment.

Sorry to sound like a Timbaland worshipper, but seriously, give him a break! Same with will.i.am. He's making all these generic electro/synth songs for a REASON. It's what sells in 2011 (see On the Floor, S&M, Party Rock Anthem, Born This Way, Give Me Everything, etc, etc.).

Ola - All Over The World #250

Not actually a disaster with no playlisting anywhere and a bit of TV support...

Unlike Lady Gaga/Coldplay though, he seems to have started to become a parody of himself and you'd have thought that Radio 1 would have taken this into account. Christina and Britney are two of the most influential/popular female artists of the last 20 years but they're now completely ignored, I don't think reputation comes into playlisting decisions, more current relevance which is fair enough but I really don't see how Timbaland is currently relevant to anything

There are ways of staying current without resorting to something like this! Fair enough that his old 'eh eh, chica chica owwww' sound wouldn't have success in 2011 because times have moved on but certainly something more poppy like If We Ever Meet Again could!

I've got a lot of respect for Timabaland, and was a huge fan of his in 2006/7 and I appreciated a few songs from Shock Value 2 as well so I'm certainly not trying to deny him of his past glories. Simply passing comment that Pass At Me is a complete nothing of a 'song' - in my opinion of course - and fully worthy of flopping should it continue to do so! All of the songs that you mentioned are all clubby generic synth songs but they all have one thing in common too to help them to such success, it's called a melody, Pass At Me could have done with acquiring one

41. Stereo Hearts (feat. Adam Levine) - Gym Class Heroes

 6. The A Team - Ed Sheeran

Also #111, #137 and #266. Hopefully the top version can crack the top 5 again.

Matt still #11 - he's certainly taking his time to make up that one position. There's not even that big a gap!

Christina Perri has a massive lead over #4 (as of the last LPB update, she's on ~49.2 and LMFAO are on ~33.6, so she has a lead over LMFAO of ~46.1% if my maths is correct!)

Timbaland is arguably one of the most influential people in modern music. Mainly before he got really popular with the mainstream (so much that even Heart FM started playing his songs). He's largely responsible for the merging of RnB and hip hop in the late 90's, so much that today they're considered the same genre by many! That's a huge impact on music he's had, and nothing that RedOne or David Guetta can even dream of matching (although, maybe, it seems the way things are going RnB and europop could be considered as the same genre in the future :drama:). Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Britney and Christina haven't really impacted music in that way. Coldplay have record-breaking albums, Britney has shaped the culture we have today, but in terms of the music, they haven't come close to impacting in the way the likes of Timbaland and Dr. Dre did.

And no, melodies aren't a good thing anymore. We've got too much of them in the chart at the moment. We need some songs with good rhythms. Interesting songs. If you want a good melody go and listen to Only Girl and Firework all day. The fact that we had to have Beautiful People released over Look At Me Now, and the fact that we had to have Sweat over a David Guetta beat rather than a Cataracs beat is evidence of all that is wrong with the UK music industry.

And how is he a parody of himself? He hasn't made many songs like this before.

If anything, we need more melodies in the chart IMO.
Is this for real?

Er, yes. You might be into Cataracs tracks that sound like shelves falling over to a beat, but I don't share that opinion. I'm actually of the opinion that anything without a melody can't be classed as a 'song'.

I'm not sure what to make of the first two paragraphs as I'm 99% sure that you're joking (although there's a tiny bit of me that can still never tell!). Mainly because we've had discussions in the past few weeks where you've agreed with me that the charts have improved vastly recently due to the presence of 'club bangers' being reduced in favour of more melodic songs.

As for your final comment, so much of his music in the last two or three years sounds like a miserable failing attempt to recreate past magic. This song sounds like a miserable failing attempt to recreate other people's magic, so perhaps I should have said that this song is a walking talking parody of the 2011 music industry in general

I can't really tell if you're joking or not.

And songs by The Cataracs (as well as other producers from Interscope like Dr. Dre, will.i.am and Timbaland as I mentioned) do have melodies in their songs, but they're just in the instrumentals rather than in the vocals. Like a G6, one of the most infectious melodies in the charts of 2010, and was made by The Cataracs.

The beat The Cataracs used for Sweat revolves completely around lots of weird sounds and percussion. David Guetta's is so generic. Yes, quite epic, I'll admit, and good for its genre, but I've heard it all before.

I'm being dead serious about my first two paragraphs. Honest. Seriously, you might not appreciate it, but Timbaland was a large reason why the charts were so full of urban music a few years ago. His material from the late 90's was more influential on the music scene of the past decade than his music in the 2006/2007 explosion.

I do think the charts have greatly improved in the past few months because of the reduction of the party songs. But I never said anything about the melodic songs really. I'm ALWAYS going on about the percussion (or lack of it )! Which is the key thing, and songs like You Need Me and Don't Go have been great for percussion (and do happen to have very catchy melodies aswell I guess).

I don't think his songs from his previous album were failures at all really, but that's just opinion. I would agree that the song is a parody of 2011 music, more than a parody of Timbaland.

No, the song is quite simply crap. :D It sounds like it should've been in the charts in 2007 - and I'm sure I would've hated the song just as much then.

Hard to imagine this is the same producer who did 'Try Again' by Aaliyah in 2000. Probably the most impressive piece of production work Timbaland ever put his name to. At least there were a couple of good moments in 2007 but everything since has been on a downward spiral. Madonna's 'Hard Candy' album sounded dated before it was even released. Yet 'Confessions On A Dancefloor' still sounds like a musical revolution in comparison.

I know what we should do. Start an anti-X Factor campaign 'Moves like Jagger for Christmas no.1'

Great idea :heehee: Now Bre would love that :D

Pass At Me is listenable, but it actually sounds to me like a beat he made for Shock Value (2007) and left, then rediscovered and used for this song.
