October 23, 201114 yr Retro Top 10 from this week 33 years ago, w/e 28th October 1978 1 (1) - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John - “Summer Nights” In its fifth week (of 7) at Number One, from the musical movie “Grease”, "Summer Nights" was the second Travolta/Newton-John duet to spend an extended period at the top during 1978 (“You’re The One That I Want” being top for 9 weeks in the summer). Mainly using alternating lines sang by the two vocalists, the song is still a staple of cheesy discos and karaoke nights to this day. Twenty years on, both number ones and a couple of other Grease tracks were combined for the awful “Grease Megamix”. The “Grease” soundtrack LP was also number one at this time, staying there for 13 weeks. 2 (2) - Boney M - “Rasputin” If it wasn’t Travolta & Newton-John at number one in 1978, it was likely Boney M - the German based West Indian group had two chart-toppers spending 9 weeks at number one between them. “Rasputin”, the single in-between stalled at number two behind the “Grease” juggernaut for a couple of weeks. The story of “Russia’s greatest love machine” according to the lyrics, it was based around a typical late 70s disco beat. The parent album, “Night Flight To Venus” had been the predecessor to “Grease” as the number one album, holding the top spot for four weeks. 3 (4) John Travolta - “Sandy” Travolta was probably the biggest star in the world at this point, but his starring roles in “Saturday Night Fever” and “Grease” were based on his dancing ability rather than his acting ability at the time, and his singing ability appeared to have been even less of a factor. “Sandy” was a plaintive ballad sang to Olivia Newton-John’s character which these days would have been drenched in auto-tune to cover Travolta’s vocal failings. Still, I bet the sleeve looked “cool” in 12-year old girls’ bedrooms 4 (3) Dean Friedman - “Lucky Stars” Something of a curiosity, “Lucky Stars” is a duet between Friedman and the uncredited Denise Marsa and is a window on a relationship that appears to be in a love/hate state. The closing refrain, song by both parts concludes “And we can thank our lucky stars that we’re not as smart as we like to think we are”. The song spent 10 weeks in the top 75 and was far and away the biggest British hit of Friedman’s career, peaking at number 3. He still tours the UK occasionally. 5 (12) Donna Summer - “MacArthur Park” There was barely a Top 75 in 1977-1980 without a Donna Summer track in it, for part of the period two different record labels (GTO & Casablanca) both had rights to some of her output and seemed to be alternating in releasing a new single every month or so. “MacArthur Park” is of course a cover of Richard Harris’ 1968 epic. The arrangement starts off in a similar, string-based style but as the record proceeds it picks up with a Georgio Moroder disco beat instead of the original which sounds like a 60s TV theme tune for the last minute and a half, yet surprisingly the cover works really well. Number five was this record’s peak, where it stayed for three consecutive weeks. Listen to the 12” version for the whole experience rather than the chopped up 7” edit. And no, they lyrics don’t make any more sense sung by Summer than they did for Harris! 6 (6) Electric Light Orchestra - “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” Electric Light Orchestra, commonly known as ELO, had an extended period of success from the Mid 1970s to the early-mid 80s with a pop-rock sound based around classical stringed instruments such as cellos rather than guitars. Led by Jeff Lynne who had been in The Move in the 60s, they only ever had one number one single (“Xanadu” with Olivia Newton-John in 1980), but put together a string of hit singles and achieved two number one albums with two other albums each spending over 100 weeks in the chart. “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” was typical ELO fare and held on to the number six spot for three straight weeks. 7 (9) Boomtown Rats - “Rat Trap” Very few of the original punk bands achieved enough longevity to become legitimate number one contenders, but the Irish group led by Bob Geldof did, and hit the summit twice - first with this and later with “I Don’t Like Mondays”. Both chart toppers are finely constructed story-telling songs, this one about life on the wrong side of the tracks. Geldof of course went on to become the force behind Band Aid/Live Aid and was awarded an honorary knighthood for his charity work, but his solo work failed to live up to expectations. A Geldof-less version of the Boomtown Rats still tours today. 8 (5) Rose Royce - “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” Rose Royce had a somewhat odd resume, half disco thumpers such as “Car Wash” and half soulful ballads like this track and “Wishing On A Star”. Gwen Dickey’s voice was versatile enough to make both genres work. An anti-love song, this had previously been number two for a couple of weeks earlier in the month and was the last of their three top ten singles. 9 (14) Jacksons - “Blame It On The Boogie” The Jackson family were, like a fair proportion of the music industry, on a disco kick in 1978, with this song competing in the charts against a cover version by (just to make things confusing) Mick Jackson. The original “won” by reaching Number 8 while the cover peaked seven places lower. The song is well-known today and it’s central chorus “Don’t blame it on the moonlight, Don’t blame it on the sunshine, Don’t blame it on the good times, Blame it on the boogie” has been used and abused a lot over the last 30 years including as the base of a football chant. 10 (7) Leo Sayer - “I Can’t Stop Lovin’ You” Sayer’s star was on the wane by late 1978, but he could still make the top ten for four weeks with this rather bland effort where his voice on the chorus was overlaid on itself several times giving the impression that it had been sung by a harmony group. He had a solo number one in 1977 with “When I Need You” and 29 years later as a featured singer on Meck’s “Thunder In My Heart (Again)” based on another of his 1977 hits. The song was later covered by Phil Collins with a slightly amended title for a minor hit in 2002.
