Not for them, obviously, but it makes a mockery of the charts in this country that such weak tracks can make no.1 and the expense of much stronger ones.

But we've always had some weak tracks making Number One, that's not much to do with "On Air/On Sale"

Somewhat dissapointing for the Saturdays with their latest hit, maybe because they have a similar video last this before a couple times.

Ke$ha was credited.

Also, 'Sugar' featured Wynter Gordon (credited as just Wynter).

True but it had been 11 years since we'd had such volume of no.1s that sold poorly overall. I thought those days were behind us.

Yeah I guess - it was getting annoying having all the flash in the pan #1s in a row!

Yes but it may not happen as often if everything was OA/OS.

I don't follow that logic. Why should songs you think as "stronger" do better with On Air On Sale? My impression is that it will just help "fanbase" acts

Yeah, that's true. Like in the US it happens, when they have everything on air, on sale, but only like once a year-type thing. Hold It Against Me was a bit of a "non-#1" there this year (although Britney's folllow-up Till the World Ends was a massively successful and long-running #3 hit over there).

I think the confusion with Ke$ha and Right Round stems from the fact that in they originally credited it just to Flo Rida in the US. They started crediting Ke$ha a few weeks after it was released, but by then it was already been credited in loads of places just to Flo Rida, and I imagine it didn't get changed in many places. Obviously, it was held back in the UK, so it was "ft. Ke$ha" here from the beginning I think.

By stronger I mean that it will sell consistently having decent sales and chart run. Not explode in at no.1 one week after being shoved down everyone's throat for 2 months just to drop out the top 10 with 2 weeks. It's not about songs I *think* are stronger, just chart runs for the likes of Moves Like Jagger, Jar Of Hearts, The A Team, Sexy And I Know It and We Found Love (to some extent) compared to those of Promises, Swagger Jagger, Stay Awake and Loca People speak for themselves

Yes the sales do, but "Moves Like Jagger", "Jar Of Hearts", "The A Team" weren't On Air/On Sale any more than "Swagger Jagger".

And I reckon the likes of "Swagger Jagger" and "Loca People" maximised their sales with their actual release policy, I can't see how they would have done any better with "On Air/On Sale"

(12) Drake-Take Care

This tune is Drake's biggest UK hit, but radio stations in the US are playing the tune "Headlines" here.

This is good, hopefully "Levels" will be a massive sucess when it's released!

One Direction only #3 :( I'm probably the only one on this forum who likes this song! :drama:

Got to admit it, getting a little tired of WFL now, roll on YDO! :cheer:

I like this song too. Don't worry

If you'd bother to read the thread, you'd know that I know some of those songs weren't OA/OS but do you really think they had the same amount of exposure as the other tracks I mentioned? Or are you just looking for reasons to disagree?

The last Virgin Hit Singles book has

"Right Round"

"Be On You"

"Suga"

as Flo-Rida solo releases, and since then I have "Turn Around (5 4 3 2 1) as a Flo-Rida solo as well.

Right Round features Ke$ha, Ben On You features Ne-Yo and Sugar features Wynter [Gordon].

AFAIA all of these are officially credited.

No, I'm just wrapping you up in a ball of your own logic. I can't see On Air/On Sale making any significant change to total sales of a track, or anything beneficial for the record companies in terms of chart performance either.

Chart history (Year peak title):

Drake

2009 42 Forever (Drake Feat. Kanye West, Lil Wayne And Eminem)

2010 50 Over

2010 24 Find Your Love

2010 37 Right Above It (Lil Wayne Feat. Drake)

2010 01 What's My Name? (Rihanna Feat. Drake)

2011 22 Moment 4 Life (Nicki Minaj Feat. Drake)

2011 12 Take Care (Drake Feat. Rihanna)

I'm a bit late here I know :P But you've missed out a few of Drake's hits from this year:

2011 57 Headlines

2011 58 She Will (Lil Wayne Feat. Drake)

2011 49 Make Me Proud (Drake Feat. Nicki Minaj)

(All between M4L and TC in that order).

Thanks Bré. Must be errors in the Virgin book then (the second volume of which was far better than the first in this regard, but not perfect!)

Also, Drunk by Ed Sheeran charted at #63, but doesn't appear on his discograpy. It should come inbetween You Need Me and Lego House I think.

No, I NEVER said it would affect overall sales. It WOULD prevent the chart looking a bit silly though, with fewer 'non no.1s'. If you must argue with me, make sure you actually know what I'm saying.

YAWN. I never said you said those things, I was (and still am) stating my views. However, I don't agree in a) The fact that "non no 1s" exist and b) short term number ones make the chart look silly. Your point of view of course is equally valid.

In your world, would you force all record companies to issue "On Air/On Sale"? If not, those savvy executives at say Cher Lloyd's record company (which company it actually is is irrelevant) would still do the same as they've done this year as it has worked beautifully for them - the Number One single ticked off and scraping every last sale out of it that they can. The track was never going to be a long runner whichever release strategy was chosen, and they've got a record with a run of {1}-3-11-19-31-41-48-58-73-x(4)-73-41 (I haven't checked what position it is in this week instead of it having a run of maybe something like 6-2-8-20-30-40....
