Mariah back in the top 10 and The Pogues falling from yesterday? Hmph.

I just knew you was going to have a right moan about it  Admit it you really like it. :P

Just because an artist is doing bad at the moment its not their problem you have to sell your music to the people and find other outlets to purchase from.

If an artist isn't selling well then it definately is their problem! The record company don't drop themselves do they. The lower her profile drops the less danger of anyone batting an eyelid when it happens, people with good initial sales like Shayne Ward just faded into obscurity because Syco just stopped putting the effort in and the artist let it happen. The reason people like Cher who have modest sales get kept on is because the record company see potential for growth in sales. Artists who sell less and less are in real danger because their career trajectory is going the opposite way. Adele has sold well because she's an outstanding international star although I do agree about the timing being crucial, that time has just past as XF is over and the Christmas period is all but gone. I can compare her to Westlife because both of them aren't keeping up with their contemparies. It's not about Woolworths etc, other artists are still selling well.

Wow there's an awful lot of artists failing out there if you think not going double platinum is failing. Very few people can maintain (or even get) the sales Leona had in the first place so the only way is down in some respects. I'm not sure how a Top 5 hit can ever be a failure though. If it is there's an awful lot of failure behind her. Not everything can be #1. It's unsustainable.

No offence, I know the barometer for success for you is however many copies Joe is selling and that's fine but Leona should be looking at keeping up with former glories. At the very least equaling her last album sales, an album that was not a success as her profile and sales dropped considerably from her previous effort. Of course a top 5 can be a failure, as an extreme example, imagine if Little Mix went in at number 5 this week! There are certain expectations on every artist from the record company, fans etc. Leona has more potential to hit certain targets than others. Number 5 is no disaster, the disaster could happen with her album, and that will be where all these little bad decisions since her debut album take their toll IMO.

As it stands, it doesn't look good for Leona. Collide made a whimper rather than a bang in the singles chart, and I'm finding it hard to judge whether Hurt has been a success or not. There seems to be a bit of a backlash about the choice of song, considering its lyrical content and that again she's gone for a cover to save her career. Part of why Run was such a success was because it was an accident - covered for Live Lounge and people loving it so much that a release was in-demand. Stop Crying Your Heart Out and Hurt feel like deliberate attempts to re-create Run but the magic just isn't there. As it stands, I'm not sure Leona could reach platinum, let alone double - especially as 2012 could see a complete collapse in general sales anyway. I guess it's just wait and see what single will lead the album. If it can capture the public's imagination, then she'll be onto a winner, if not....

I agree with all of this. Where are the good songs like the ones Simon was sourcing for her debut? Syco just aren't bothered anymore. They can't just release rubbish like Happy and Collide and expect Leona to coast by with her fanbase, cos they're gonna desert her. She needs a massive single to launch the album, I'll be interested to see what she comes out with.

Leona: As in most cases, its all down to the tunes. 'Bleeding love' was a great song, really good and a fantastic lead single that propelled the Album to eventually over 3 million UK sales. Her second album was fine, but didnt have those killer songs the first one had. imo

As for 'Collide' I want to forget that autotuned Euro-pap...I mean, autotuning Leonas voice, what were they thinking???.

As Adele has shown and Leona did on her first album, you dont need flashy gimmicks etc etc if you have a great voice and great songs.

People think you are a snob when you say 'They should write their own music' but its really true for their own sakes. At the beginning its risky because you have to see if the public are on board with your style but if they are you are almost guaranteed a sustained career with the extra money pocketed from the songwriter fee. Leona doesn't have a style because she has a team of people crowding her with market analysis trying to figure out what the public needs her to be. We know what to expect from Adele, Kate Bush, Foo Fighters, Florence etc... and because of that they all have made their own niche fanbase. Leona is at the mercy of whatever Syco wants to do with her, there aren't many Bleeding Love's coming her way and I guess that part of the EP is associating these great ballads to her image and name which has backfired spectacularly.

Well, why can't Leona just use the same songwriters all the time then? That has the same effect as writing the songs yourself (minus the extra money you get). Like Rihanna always has Ester Dean, Ne-Yo, Stargate, etc. write her songs, so that has the same effect with regards to the public being "familiar" with the writing style and knowing what to expect from the artist, etc.

And also, saying it's "backfired spectacularly" is waaaaaay dramatic.

Cee-lo Green's Anyway or Michael Bublé's Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) could be top 40 on sunday.

Hopefully the former, hopefully not the latter (if it does take off though I'm going to have to mount a campaign to get the superb Darlene Love original into the top 40, or even Mariah bloody Carey).

It is a bit but looking at Twitter after Royal Variety it was all about how she was mocking Cash/NIN and 'kindly informing' people it isn't her song. So trying to portray this as her new direction with such huge songs that are well loved was maybe a mistake.

I don't think they know who they want Leona to work with to start, they are bouncing between genres right now and the big ballad EP reeks of mimicing Adele even down to the big ITV performance to break the song.

glad to see mama do the hump in the top 30 really love that song

i thought leona might manage to get top 5 at the begining of the week but now im thinking more like the bottom end of the top 10

Buble has the no1 album in the bag for the next two weeks but it'll be interesting to see where his sales land when xmas is over although i wouldnt be surprised to see his album back next xmas

Ollys holding up well with his album he has to be one of the only x factor acts to do better with his second album than his debut when his debut sold extremly well i would say his xtra factor role helped but i think its just a case of better songs (although i know being on tv every weekend for 3 months wont have hurt)

im actually surprised to see JLS' album holding up so well i honestly expected them to be much lower by now

Is there any realistic contender with xfactor for next week's xmas n.1?

Military Wives have it in the bag!

There are ways of putting your opinion across, it's not very mature and it was actually without basis.

If you think saying Loon is immature, you have a lot to learn in life. There is plenty of evidence based on your recent posts thank you, so go back to your Olly Murs CD and stop stirring. :D Have a nice day.

Any chance you enjoyed the Glee version of AIWFCIY Bre?

I still think the Military Wives is alot of hype over nothing. I've heard nothing about it other than on here! I'm sure it will go top 10, but I can see it doing a 'Surfin' Bird' and failing to get the #1.

Tbh it is hard to tell - sometimes these tracks are all hype and no trousers! The only real way (obviously) to see what will happen is to wait until next weeks midweeks. I think it will be huge though.

I think LM could be Xmas #1 but on really low sales (in comparison to previous Xmas #1s of course - not in general).

Maybe I'm just being pessimistic that LM won't get number 1 (it'd be AMAZING if they did) for Xmas, but I really think Wherever You Are is the most certain number 1 all year :(

LOL

Well I'm glad that people are now agreeing en masse about Leona, I thought I'd stumbled into the Leona Lewis appreciation society for a minute there where there was no space for objective thinking whatsoever. Hope she does well btw.

Yes plenty of evidence which is why you provided no examples. I see you abandoned what you were saying about Leona though so that's something. Good boy.

Do you dislike Leona due to your love for Olly Murs or are you actually subjective?
