I wouldn't know if this is forgotten at all as it was released a LONG, LONG time before I started following the charts (in 2003 to be precise) but I was shocked when I found out Turin Brakes has a top 5 hit. I only knew them from a couple of songs off their flop 2010 album 'Outbursts'.

'Pain Killer' only spent 3 weeks in the chart and aside from its peak didn't do a whole lot better than their handful of other top 40 hits, none of which made the top 40.

This is a good one, actually. Although I remember the week this was released was COMPLETELY dead (and not even slightly, nothing major was out), and back then you just couldn't have dead weeks with no new releases coming in like you do now (bar the week after Xmas!). So all the shops like Woolworths, ASDA, etc, that did chart predictions had this release VERY high and stocked prominently which I think contributed hugely to it. A bit of luck, if you will.

Kira - I'm Your Angel reached #9 the same week for similar reasons - I don't even remember how that one goes!

And prior to Eurovision notoriety and their shock, but not necessarily forgotten, second UK top five hit Flying The Flag (For You), I wonder how many people knew or could recall Scooch's first, from over 7 years earlier;

Nice pop song but what a shame that it wasn't For Sure that had the top five status instead of this.

I love this too! :lol: Such a Steps clone, but I was shocked when I found out a couple of years later it was top 5.

It's so forgotten even I don't remember it, genuinely drawing a blank!

Iirc, it made #10 then dropped to like #40 the following week. Not surprised you've forgotten it since I wouldn't have thought they'd be your cup of tea anyway. :lol: (I however, have it on single. It has possibly my favourite single artwork ever. :wub:)

A forgotten one from February 2006 from one of Atomic Kitten:

Liz McClarnon - Woman In Love #5

And even on such a dead week my favourite song around at the time, Masai's Do That Thang (4 weeks at #1 in my personal chart :lol:), could only limp in at #42!

Going off on a tangent and speaking of dead charts, I still remember a chart in early 2002 where Mary J Blige's Dance For Me was the highest new entry at #13 and there were only 7 in the top 40, it was practically unheard of back then, pretty average now, even generous! As a result that top 40 had 10 climbers in it, like you say - that NEVER happened outside of Xmas week!

And another from April 2004:

Wolfman feat. Pete Doherty - For Lovers #7

I had totally forgotten this until I was looking through some old CDs the other week. Wonderful song.

Never hear of Texas' two #06 hits Getaway or (Let Me) Sleep anymore, they were amazing :(
Stuck entered the charts at 11, then moved up to 9 the following week. (There's Gotta Be) More To Life entered at number 12, whereas Hilary Duff's So Yesterday entered at number 9 the same week. Where's the justice? Haha.

So Yesterday is an amazing song is why!

How about a couple of unrelated Italian dance songs from 2002? I love and bought both on single but it's fair to say I've not heard either of them on the radio for a decade;

Dove deserved SO much more than #9 and swiftly out :nocheer: For some reason I was thinking it was going to be a huge top 5 prior to its release! The follow up, Acrobats (also brilliant) failed to go top 40...

Laughable, but Gaydio always play 'Dove (I'll Be Loving You)'. I also bought it on CD and play it regularly. It's an amazing song.

and another from 2007!

Pretty much echoed by its 10-40 something run that it was a total fanbase bought fluke, but it was pretty good :(

also, preferences aside, surely the most forgotten top 10 hit of recent years is this?

somehow got to 10 in 2008 and then almost fell out of the top 100 the next week, I haven't heard a mere mention of it since...

Nothing to do with your response but the last bit of my post was clearly meant to read 'none of which made the top 20' :drama: Having several top 40 hits with none of them making the top 40 would be quite something.

Random indie band that were hyped by the usual suspects (NME, etc). This got to #10 also in early 1999.

Gay Dad are usually seen as the punchline for any over-hyped band that fails to deliver on their initial promise (c.f Terris, Viva Brother), which is a shame, as despite the overwhelming negativity, they did have a cracking follow up hit that should have become a modern day classic but didn't - the spectacular Joy. Hopefully in a few years time people will look down and re-assess them and realise they weren't really ALL that bad:

And back on topic...

I was going through all the old CDs that had been submitted to Queen's Radio over the past 10 years (one of the joys of being the Head of Music here) and I came across the promo version of 'Staring at the Sun' by Rooster. I absolutely loved this song back in 2005 and I was sure that the song would go to number 1. Instead it could only peak at number 5. Haven't heard it in years before listening to it this evening, it's a real gem.

Oh, and now for my End of year #1 from 2000, I know she has some fans on Buzzjack but the general public would draw a blank I'm sure;

Absolutely Everybody - Vanessa Amarosi

When this gets played in work it goes down amazingly, I may work in a gay bar, but still; they love it.

This thread proves that whilst sales were abysmal during the during 2003-2008 it has proved a treasure trove for forgotten hits! :o

God I remember this. Awful.

BUT IT WASN'T STEPS? WHAT?
