Coldplay began working on Mylo Xyloto in 2009, while the band was still in the midst of its multi-year tour in support of Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Recording sessions stretched from 2009 to 2011, with Brian Eno collaborating with the band on several songs and R&B singer Rihanna lending her vocals to “Princes of China.” Markus Dravs, Daniel Green, and Rik Simpson all shared production credits, too, resulting in a diverse album inspired by industrial rock and electro-pop. Coldplay began debuting the new tracks as early as May 2011, with “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” kicking off a string of anthemic singles.

You Can Call Me Al

With Graceland, Paul Simon hit on the idea of combining his always perceptive song writing with the little-heard mbaqanga music of South Africa, creating a fascinating hybrid that re-enchanted his old audience and earned him a new one. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar.

As eclectic as any record Simon had made, it also delved into zydeco and conjunto-flavoured rock & roll while marking a surprising new lyrical approach (presaged on some songs on Hearts and Bones); for the most part, Simon abandoned a linear, narrative approach to his words, instead drawing highly poetic ("Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"), abstract ("The Boy in the Bubble"), and satiric ("I Know What I Know") portraits of modern life, often charged by striking images and turns of phrase torn from the headlines or overheard in contemporary speech. An enormously successful record, Graceland became the standard against which subequent musical experiments by major artists were measured. - HMV

We Found Love

Rihanna follows 2010’s Loud, still riding high on the charts, with Talk That Talk. The singer's sixth studio album features the euphoric, Calvin Harris-produced “We Found Love” -- already a number one single in several countries. Once again, Swedish songwriting and production team Stargate is involved, as is Jay-Z, who appears on the title track.

Turning Tables (Live)

'21' is the second album from singer-songwriter Adele, and like her first record, 2008's '19', it is named after the age Adele was when she wrote the album. Most of '21' was produced by Rick Rubin, who has worked with some of the biggest acts of the last 20 years, and Florence & The Machine producer Paul Epworth. Lyrically the album reflects Adele's increased maturity since '19', although it explores many of the same themes.

Hips And Lips

The National Health is the fourth album from indie rockers Maxïmo Park, who follow up 2009’s Quicken the Heart with the kind of energy, charm and invention that has been evident since their 2005 debut, A Certain Trigger. Lead singer Paul Smith's North East accent is as punchy and sincere as ever, while the blend of synths and distorted guitars lends him the perfect backdrop, represented best on single “Hips and Lips”. - HMV
