Turn Around doing A LOT better than anyone expected, right??

Yeah, at least for me. Vegas Girl probably wouldn't have peaked top 10 if it was post-album, and I wasn't sure this would, but now it looks like it could even go top 5 on iTunes.

So what you're saying is - a 'promo' single is one that's *unpromoted*? :P

No, it's one whose only purpose is to promote the album.

What people call "promo" singles are just those that tend to be put for download before the album release, and not much else.

Whilst normal singles usually have full-fledged promotional campaigns, being sent to radio, having music videos, maybe live performance, a remix EP, and so on.

Songs such as Meet Me Halfway and Titanium didn't do even close to their full potential as promo singles, but when given better promotion months later they were both massive #1 hits.

A promo single is not promoted, exactly. As Charlie said it's released to promote an upcoming album. It doesn't and won't have a video, neither airplay, nor advertisement.

There are of course exceptions: Titanium was a promo single but after the album it got a full release.

PS: Eric described it very well actually when I was posting. BTW I'm quite surprised you didn't know this vidcapper. I thought you're very much interested in charts :P

"Madness" up to #24 and still increasing quite quickly, that 40p reduction was impeccably timed. Coming from a bit far back to challenge for top 10 this week, but with the album dropping on Monday it could still beat "Uprising"'s peak.

Does it look like it's going to spend 7 weeks at #2? THERE'S YOUR ANSWER.

Their appearance on Jools Holland hasn't hindered them either.

They should release Diamonds in a week and a half.

That's a relatively short repression for UK standards and means 1D won't be huge competition.

Yeah, and also in a week and a half it'll build up loads of airplay too. Capital FM will probably play it 5-6 times today alone.

Nooo, we need Swedish House Mafia to get the #1 that week! :(

I think they'll release it the week after, since (naturally) something needs to stop Calvin Harris from getting to number one

No. Diamonds should be released now. It's been premiered and released in other countries, why the f*** should we wait to buy it?

PSY will get a boost over the next few days when the music channels start playing his video in the chart rundowns.

I have to admit I agree, it may not go to number 1 instantly, but its nice to finally see the UK getting something at the same time everyone else is.

We got Clique at the same time as everyone else! :D

The *statistics* of them, yes - but not the illogical release practices of record companies! :P

Some promo singles do have videos though, and some do get airplay - I heard Lady Gaga's Edge of Glory (when it was a promo single) and Hair on radio at the time of release, and some of Justin Bieber's latest promo singles were played. I think Madonna's Masterpiece was a radio-only song to promote MDNA, too.

Yeah, Hair, Titanium and All Around the World got playlisted by Capital FM as promo singles.

Radio stations can playlist anything they want, whether they're singles or not. If you listen to a station like Choice FM, they play tons of non-singles. And Count On Me and Read All About It, Part III are played on Heart FM. And so on.

It does seem that more often than not, though, that radio stations have a reason for playing non-single songs.

I think the most random song that a radio station has chosen to play is ABBA's The Day Before You Came which I heard once! :P
