They would also need more room to put these booths, and if it's popular, room for extra queues! But I think the idea itself is a fantastic one!

By the way, Pop B!tch, I hope you don't mind me asking but just out of curiosity, which HMV do you work at?

I'd rather not say online - Im always a bit wary of who could be reading! I work at one of their bigger London stores though.

Thanks. :D They mustn't have very much viewers/buyers though.

That's fine, I just thought it would be cool if I or any of us had been unknowingly served by you!

P.S. your siggie needs trimming or use smaller images..

I have used a smaller image of the Little Mix cover. I will "trim" it at some point when Christmas is over.

 I like your confidence in me - Short changing customers and then being rude to them  However on another note I always seem to get the 30 year old gay men aim for me when they are buying a Little Mix/Kylie/Cheeky Girls CD
There's no real justice that HMV are the last to go considering they have always offered the worst prices. Obviously their massive profit margins from these prices kept them afloat longer but their rip off business model was never gonna do well in the download/internet age in the long term. Not sorry to see them go (when they finally do).

Does this mean Fopp will be gone too? (If it was heading that way of course!)

I am genuinely GUTTED about this. Although HMV's prices are sometimes steeper (online) than play.com and amazon etc.. I always end up buying from there for two reasons:

1) I really do feel like I'm cheating on them and I like to be loyal!

2) They're reliable and efficient. All my CD's and DVD's etc... have arrived on time and promptly. (I've had issues with other suppliers in the past - don't think I've had one with HMV yet! - I've been using them since late 2005/early 2006).

They really do need to bring something in to captivate people and get their attention. The 2 for £10 was always a good deal/offer. I like the new 2 for £15 for Chart CD's though! They should make that a mix and match with Chart DVD's though. But I really don't know what they could do. We all know for music and films, digital is taking over, slowly but surely. If they unfortunately do happen to bust, I do hope they keep their website so I can get my CD's and DVD's still.

But yeah, everytime I go for a trip into town, I HAVE to go in there and have a browse. Even if I know I'm not going to spend money, I just have to browse!

It's a shame HMV can't just introduce some type of CD single making booth. Select the CD (ie; 'Diamonds' tracklist would be that of the EP on iTunes). Insert blank CD, wait a few minutes for tracks to be burned onto blank CD. Meanwhile, artwork is printed off and et voila a CD single of 'Diamonds', 'Troublemaker' and 'Locked Out Of Heaven' all costing £2.99 each. That's a sale of £8.97 from these three requests.

Ok, so that's possibly never going to happen but it makes me wonder why they can't trial something like this. Obviously I wouldn't even begin to imagine what the costs would be to have such facilities in store, and how much it'd cost to maintain these facilities over a long period of time.

Havent larger Tesco stores started doing this? edit - answered above

Pity that the age of the internet was meant to introduce more freedom when in reality the opposite has happened!!

Yeah, that's exactly how I feel as well! I have to go into HMV every time I go into town because there's nothing else to do really.

I used to do this with Woolworths. :snif: Poor HMV, but they're too expensive for me. Shame they can't stay competitive with a profit margin. :(

Yeah same here, its the highlight of any shopping trip!!

It'll be a real shame if it goes, if only because it's the only last main 'music shop' left. I still shop in HMV regularly, have spent £300 in there since October alone!

I remember when I first got into music in 1998-ish, I'd go to town and go into HMV, Virgin Megastores, Our Price, MVC, Borders, Woolworths, WH Smith and others that all sold music and had various different offers/imports or other things. Now it's just one shop left and even that doesn't have music as its main focus anymore, very sad :(

I do feel for the people who may lose their jobs and the loss of another high street retailer but HMV just aren't competitive enough. Most CDs are a couple of pounds cheaper at supermarkets or online and the market for older CDs and non-internet savvy customers just isn't big enough.

The problem is of course that HMV charge higher prices as they have to to stay in business. I genuinely don't think they are "ripping people off" as is often claimed, they just have far larger overheads than the online retailers that they need to cover.

Also, supermarkets can have lower margins on cds as they make their money on other products. Having said that though, I was surprised that in Tesco the top 10 cds are £10, the same as HMV.

For my media project, I'm completely rebranding HMV...

All your comments You've made today will make EXCELLENT secondary research. Thanks very much :D

I'd be sad if HMV closes, I did do a survey on HMV to 52 people... If there's interest I'll post it on here if ya like :)
