After losing out on the Official 2012 Christmas Number 1 to The Justice Collective’s cover of He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother, James Arthur’s Impossible looks set to return to the top of the Official Singles Chart on Sunday, with nearly 125,000 copies of the 2012 X Factor winner’s single being purchased so far this week.

To date, Impossible has sold over 838,000 copies, making it the fifth biggest selling X Factor debut of all time. Indeed, in just under three weeks Arthur’s track has eclipsed the all-time sales of Joe McElderry’s The Climb, One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful, JLS’ Beat Again, Little Mix’s Cannonball and Olly Murs’ Please Don’t Let Me Go.

It’s not just James Arthur who has enjoyed record sales so far this week – the Official Singles Chart Update Top 5 has already sold in excess of 400,000 copies, with many fans purchasing tracks on Christmas Day and Boxing Day via their new MP3 players and tablet devices.

Psy’s Gangnam Style surges up four places from Number 6 to Number 2, while Will.I.Am and Britney Spears’ Scream And Shout holds firm at Number 3. The Top 5 is completed by The Justice Collective’s He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother (Number 4) and Olly Murs and Flo Rida’s Troublemaker (Number 5).

Albums

According to today’s Official Albums Chart Update, Emeli Sande, Michael Buble and Olly Murs are battling it out for the New Year’s Number 1 album.

Reigning chart queen Emeli Sande has a fight on her hands if she wants to hold onto the Number 1 spot on the Official Albums Chart this Sunday.

With just over 4,000 copies currently separating the Top 3, the Scottish singer’s debut album, Our Version Of Events (Number 1) faces tough competition from Michael Buble’s Christmas (2) and Olly Murs' Right Place, Right Time (3) for the Official New Year’s Number 1 Album.

Our Version Of Events, which claimed the Official 2012 Christmas Number 1 album this past Sunday, has spent a total of six weeks at the top spot and a staggering 44 weeks in the Official Albums Chart Top 10. To date Our Version Of Events has sold 1.3 million copies, making it the biggest selling album of 2012 so far.

The Official Albums Chart Update Top 5 is completed by Rihanna’s Unapologetic, which climbs two places to Number 4, and Bruno Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox at Number 5.

This week’s Official Albums Chart highest climber is Labrinth’s Electronic Earth, which surges 38 places from Number 61 to 23. Rita Ora’s Ora and Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange both climb 24 places to Number 12 and Number 38, respectively.

The album chart is still quite dominated by albums fit for the Christmas market - I imagine Rita Ora, Labrinth, Frank Ocean etc. will climb even more during the week.
I hope the singles also follow! I've sent the OCC a message to ask if they can also publish the midweek singles. Fingers crossed, hopefully they will also follow.
The Pogues still Top 20! They'll easily be Top 40 for Sunday then. The singles chart doesn't really have any of the year's biggest hits re-entering - it's mainly the Autumn hits that are getting boosts.

Hopefully! I expected Channel ORANGE to be flying high back into the top 20 by now :(

I guess Michael Bublé will dip to #3 by the end of the week, now that Christmas has passed. This is effectively with a missing day's sales too!
4k between the top 3, not to be sniffed at, I imagine Emeli Sande will hold on
The sales of 2 days before Christmas are always going to be a lot higher than 2 days of sales after. It's no surprise that the top end has had no effect yet, I don't think it'll have much effect by the end of the week either TBH.

PSY #2 yay! will.i.am might re-overtake him by Sunday though.

James has sales of 125k for the week already, looks like he might get the biggest selling winner's single :drama:

Gift card effect really does seem quite flat this year compared to the last few. The Pogues should stay top 40 easily because of it though so woo.

Singles top 40 now up

I'm way ahead of you ;)

400k for the Top 5 singles? James Arthur is on 125k, I'm guessing Gangnam Style is on 80k, S&S 75k then JC and Olly Murs on about 60k each?
125k this week so far for James? Awesome, a million sales is a definite then :D
Maybe the Pogues will pass a million this week if they stay top 40?

They are at 991k right? They should easily pass 1 million if they stay top 40.

Glad to see Kelly and Alicia at 20 and 19. They should both sell another 10k+ if they hold on I believe. :cheer:

The 991k is an estimate by Gezza, the OCC haven't confirmed any sales, but fingers crossed!

Seems that James Arthur will pass a million early next year then as well - hopefully fun and Guetta/Sia will too at some point so we can have 5 million sellers released in 2012.
