Another one from around that time period - 'Headlines' by Spice Girls.

By no means was it one of their most exciting singles (probably the worst actually), but the hype behind their comeback suggested that it would've made #1. I guess it became doubtful when the release date was revealed to be close to that of 'Bleeding Love'.

I remember it was hailed before the release as Kylie's biggest competition for the no 1 spot; Not only did it not make no 1, it missed out on the top 10!

Did anyone see this one going to #1?

I was surprised It even got to #2, I now think it's brilliant but I didn't know how anyone could take to the screaching vocals at the time and it stalled outside the Top 10 for the first couple of weeks after it was released iirc - pretty much as I was expecting (a similar run to Bootsy's 'New In Town' from around the same time!).

Thankfully Skream's remix catapulted it into the massive hit that it became!

I seem to remember being shocked (in a good way) it even got top 40, it had very little support prior to its release IIRC (R1 only added it to the Upfront playlist but playlisted it properly after it took off).

Little Mix 'DNA' is another song I was pretty certain and sure that it was going to be a number 1 for them, but damn One Direction and Bruno Mars. It still should have made it! Even if it would have been a "non-number 1". It deserved that peak, and nothing less.

I always thought that DNA would stall at #2 or #3. I never thought that it would go to #1 at all. It's a great shame though, it was by far the best song that had a chance of #1 that week. :(

I really expected Frisky to get the #1 but Dizzee Rascal snatched it in the end.

NO DOUBT 'PUSH AND SHOVE'

Still GUTTED to this day that it stalled at #2. :(

Why couldn't either this, 'Settle Down' or 'Looking Hot' be MASSIVE?

Two that stand out for me are:

Liberty X - Being Nobody

B*Witched - Jesse Hold On

Yes! I remember being so shocked at the time, when I had less knowledge about the charts etc. that they missed out .... and didnt even end up at #02. Both seemed to have massive hype about them at the time too.

Yeah, I agree with the Liberty X example as well. I was getting into music when it came out and it had so much hype around it! I can't believe that it didn't even enter the Top 2 at the time. :o

I didn't expect Jesse Hold On to get past Genie In A Bottle which was released on the same week but #2 seemed a given. The heavyweight that was Ann Lee got in the way
Seems absurd now but I remember people assuming Oasis' "The Shock of the Lightning", Sugababes' "Girls" and (to a lesser extent) Kaiser Chiefs' "Never Miss A Beat" to make #1 and "So What" to stall lower in the top 5.

Didn't everyone in the world expect this to miss the Top 10? The hype compared to their other singles seemed paractically non-existant. I was pleasantly surprised it went to #5!

Agreed about Oasis, I'd have expected a comeback from them to beat P!nk who (had a load of huge hits, but) hadn't had a #1 in years!

Two from three most shocking results for me :

Madonna & Britney Spears isn't # 1, because Busted

Westlife isn't # 1, because Bob The Builder

Third shock was : "The Climb" isn't # 1 on Christmas. [sorry for repeat it, but that chart is eternal "Worst UK Singles Chart"]

Justin Beiber - Boyfriend - Considering the hype, I was shocked it didn't make the summit.

Another vote for Rihanna ft Eninem and Maroon 5 ft Christina Aguilera - shame they were long running #2s :(

Samantha Mumba - Gotta Tell You - this was EVERYWHERE!

Another one which is very lesser known:

Preeya Kalidas - Shakalaka Baby - Limped into about #37 - had potential to be a huge summer hit.

Yes I thought Gotta Tell You by Samantha Mumba would go No.1. Also I thought Crazy Chick by Charlotte Church was heading for No.1 too. There was a lot of buzz around that single for a little while.

But I remember when I heard The Show by Girls Aloud for the first time. I thought it was SO catchy, and as the first single from their second album I thought it HAD to race to No.1. It sound so fresh to me

*raises hand*

Yep, that would be me. I also expected The Pussycat Dolls 'When I Grow Up' and Leon Jackson 'Don't Call This Love' to be #1 singles just because of who they were.

Fortunately the UK had a miracle phase of excellent #1 singles, imo, and these 3 songs all peaked at #3 instead (thankfully). I'm sure most people would disagree but 'Dance Wiv Me', 'All Summer Long', 'I Kissed A Girl', 'Sex On Fire' and 'So What' was one of my personal fave chains of UK chart toppers. :D

More songs I predicted to hit #1 before release...

Dido - White Flag

Madonna - Die Another Day

Kylie Minogue - All The Lovers

Sugababes - Girls / Get Sexy

Natalie Imbruglia - Shiver (Yes, seriously! It had loads of pre-release airplay.)

And one that just popped into my head:

SPICE GIRLS - HEADLINES (FRIENDSHIP NEVER ENDS)

I never imagined it would have missed the top ten in any form, even if the track didn't get positive feedback! There was still the comeback hype.

Dannii's "You Won't Forget About Me" was one I predicted to hit #1 as it was released the same (dead) week that that forgetable R. Kelly "Wonderful" song hit ##1.

Apologies if these have already been mentioned:

Will Young - Don't Let Me Down / You And I (he was massive in 2002, and the song was for CIN)

Robbie Williams - Feel (he had just signed a massive record deal, yet this didn't even go top 3)

Gareth Gates - Sunshine (much hyped tune that only made #3 and dropped quite quickly)

I remember predicting it would be top 5 in the EOY chart. It was 195
