April 7, 201313 yr Wiley's biggest hits are 'Wearing My Rolex' which doesn't have a featured artist and 'Heatwave'/'Can You Hear Me? (Ayayaya)' whose featured artists aren't known for much outside those songs  The latter two rely on someone else singing the chorus, though. Why would someone want to buy a Wiley album when he doesn't even do the choruses? And yes Chipmunk and Dappy had top ten albums but they sold practically nothing. Unless you're Eminem or Plan B in the UK then the best you can hope for is a top ten album and maybe a Gold certification.
April 7, 201313 yr :( I'm getting used to the idea of Pink not getting to no.1. Although fairplay I thought this would be low top 10 for a week and disappear.
April 7, 201313 yr Love the Duke Dumont track. Shame P!nk's becoming the new 'Moves Like Jagger' with this though.

What the hell does not doing the choruses have to do with people buying an album? It's right that few rap albums do well (Eminem's entire career, Tinie Tempah and 50 Cent being a few exceptions), but someone with singles as big as Wiley's should at least manage a top 10 debut. April 7, 201313 yr Looks like Just Give Me A Reason could be this years "Moves Like Jagger". 2 weeks at #2 already and it should get a third next week. Then possibly more when it overtakes Duke but can't beat Rudimental/Chris Malinchak. DUKE DUMONT YES!!!
April 7, 201313 yr What the hell does not doing the choruses have to do with people buying an album? Erm, it's quite obvious. If he doesn't sing choruses then why would anyone want to buy the album? If a rapper is just going to throw out a song every few months with someone else singing the chorus what incentive does that give to people to buy one of his albums? There's a reason why rappers like him (and Chipmunk and Tinchy and Flo Rida etc) don't sell albums is because no one really cares about them. They'll buy their singles, sure, because it's someone else singing the chorus but they probably don't even consider buying a full album of theirs because it could essentially be anyone doing the "rappy bits".

Oh come now this is a silly arguement- Eminem does exactly the same trick and yet sells albums by the truckload- after all who was Dido before Eminem sampled her?

I think it's more to do with the genre of music they're doing to be honest. The rappers that release dance-pop singles (like Flo Rida, Pitbull, LMFAO) won't sell much. Rap artists that are doing hip hop music do better in the album charts. Some hip hop artists can chart quite high in the UK album charts without really getting any chart hits (e.g. Lil Wayne, Nas, Rick Ross, etc.). And people like Drake and Kanye West do well too.
April 7, 201313 yr Oh come now this is a silly arguement- Eminem does exactly the same trick and yet sells albums by the truckload- after all who was Dido before Eminem sampled her? You can't compare someone like Wiley to Eminem. Eminem has always released proper hip hop/rap songs full of hooks and humour and also touches on sensitive and controversial issues. He's more than just your average rapper. He's had plenty of massive songs that he's done himself (Lose Yourself, Without Me, Not Afraid, The Real Slim Shady etc) and puts alot of effort into videos and public appearances. Wiley jumps between urban music to dance music and his lyrcs are generally awful. He's got absolutely no identity. I bet half of the UK wouldn't even recognise him in the street.

I recall back in 99 "My Name Is" was regarded as novelty by some (of course we didn't know what was to come) and it certainly felt gimmicky. I support your basic argument to the extent that rap artists (and certainly UK rap acts) don't sell albums in the volumes in that US rap acts do but that's more to do with the fact that rap is always seen as a US genre which they do far better than we can. Hence the big names of the genre always come from the states. You can compare something like "Wearing My Rolex" to "My Name is" and they aren't poles apart in terms of where the act was at that point in their career.
