Eminem's song is out in other countries, but not in the UK, so I think it's being held back.

 Why is it ALWAYS the UK that gets songs held back for weeks on end!!

Because when a song doesn't immediately get to no.1 using OA/OS the British media brand the song and release method as floppy even when they aren't.

Why would record companies care about that?

The bottom line is what matters, and a song that peaks at #1 but sells only 300k in total, is gonna generate a lot less money than one that peaks at #5 but sells 750k...

The artist gains less support for the next single.

Any idea how long it's being held back for? Hopefully just until Sunday.

I don't know why, but how come they won't release OA/OS then? It seems having a no.1 to your name is a big selling point no matter how naff sales are.

Is the pre-order for "R U Crazy" by Conor Maynard anywhere in the top 1500 yet? (i don't have time to check)

Just heard this, I really like it on first listen, it's got a very Tinie Tempah production to it!

Exactly... I mean look at Lady GaGa her release was an OA/OS, and that didnt do her any favours...That is why i respect Katy Perry's UK Record label holding off to get buzz around it and to get people hearing it that is why she will get her #1 single when it is released same as Eminem I'm guessing...Another example of this is Miley....had she released it with all the other countries without the buzz/promo she did she wouldnt have gotten her #1

Wow. :o I didn't think Drake would reclaim the #10 spot since he was far behind the top 9 at the weekend before RK overtook him. Maybe the VMAs helped even if he did sing one line of the song. Great to see 'Same Love' rocketing from just one performance. It'd be amazing if it creeped into the top 40 on Sunday even if I do hate broken chart runs but I think it'll fall short. And to answer whoever asked why people are panicking over it not taking off - I think it's because CHU was released 3/4 months ago and there isn't even a release date for the next single. But if Zane Lowe is playing it, I wonder if it will be playlisted in the coming weeks. An XF performance of it would be brilliant.

It might not be 100% forgotten but any casual music fans most likely will not remember it, due to it being a minor top 40 hit. That's the point Umi was trying to make as far as I can see? Of course their fans are gonna know their songs...

Who are "casual music fans"? Pretty much everybody I know personally is just as into music as I am, if not more. I haven't forgotten that song you're discussing, since I never knew it in the first place lol, but I can easily believe that there's a million+ people that DO know the song. Plus, fans of that type of music don't seem to use iTunes, etc. much. It's more about albums, Spotify, live events, etc. in that genre, so it's unfair to use solely the charts to determine how well-known a song is imo.

Well exactly, he was suggesting that it was almost completely forgotten. As Eric was alluding to, manufactured pop lives and breathes on singles sales so it'd be fair to say that, for instance, a Union J single that got to #30 and then fell out would be far more forgotten than something by a band that attracts thousands of people (fans or otherwise) on the festival circuit.

But Applause has been top 10 for 3 weeks now so how did it 'not do her any favours'?!

Because had it been held back, she would've debuted at #1

Because had it been held back, she would've debuted at #1

And so what she prob would have debuted high enough on sales then been out of the top 40 within a month so its better it was released OA/OS so people can but it when they hear it in stead of getting some stupid high chart position!

Avril Lavigne's single failed to make top 10 after getting released well after a month in the US and weeks after she had promoted the song on tv, the labels have to get their act together, I'll be interested to see if Katy Perry's track does as well as it did in the US
Avril's single was never going to make the top 10, radio won't play her these days so the odds were stacked against her whenever she would have released it.

Katys track will have high debut sales of between 120k and 180k then have a 50% weekly drop off!!

We're not the US guys. Tracks don't benefit from OA/OS over here as much as they do in the US. We're still getting used to having OA/OS tracks after so many years of waiting for tracks to become available. Yes, we've had some of the biggest hits of the past few years which were OA/OS, but that's just us starting to adapt to this whole technique. We're slowly getting used to how it has (always?) worked in the US.

As for the media, they can go shove it somewhere. When 'Applause' has been in the top 10 for a couple of more weeks they'll be branding it a smash and hopefully it'll teach them to not jump the gun so often.
