Posted September 14, 201311 yr We hear a lot about one-hit-wonders, but what about artists who have one massive debut album, then either disappear without trace, or whose follow-up(s) crash & burn? (I think we should exclude XF artists from this, because they only have initial success from massive publicity, rather than merit). For me, one of the best examples would be Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
September 14, 201311 yr Basshunter is another good example. After his first album he only had a few minor hits before disappearing completely.
September 14, 201311 yr Elastica are another good example. First album did amazingly well - #1 in 1995 - and by the time they released their follow up five years later the Britpop bubble had long burst.
September 14, 201311 yr Author duffy is probably one of the biggest examples of recent times. I always thought that was so unfair...
September 14, 201311 yr The Ting Tings is another good recent-ish example, I remember people even saying at the time of the release of the first one that they thought they might be one album wonders!
September 14, 201311 yr Iirc, Alphabeat's first album went top ten and then the follow up scraped top forty.
September 14, 201311 yr In terms of studio albums, The Sex Pistols. Considering how iconic and influential they were and still are, I'd have thought they would have released more than one. Lots of compilation albums though.
September 14, 201311 yr She has an awful voice. The Darkness Daniel Beddingfield Daniel Bedingfield's second album sold 300k so don't think he falls into the same category.
September 14, 201311 yr Author Daniel Bedingfield's second album sold 300k so don't think he falls into the same category. What about the 'awful voice' one? :P
September 14, 201311 yr What about the 'awful voice' one? :P Endlessly sold 200k+ I believe. Does that count? Not as good as Rockferry but still criminally underrated.
September 14, 201311 yr Author Endlessly sold 200k+ I believe. Does that count? Not as good as Rockferry but still criminally underrated. The last total I saw was 157k, but that was in Jan'11
September 14, 201311 yr Elastica are another good example. First album did amazingly well - #1 in 1995 - and by the time they released their follow up five years later the Britpop bubble had long burst. Beat me to it. Elastica is one of my favourite albums, but The Menace is rather terrible. It did introduce M.I.A to the music world though.
September 14, 201311 yr The last total I saw was 157k, but that was in Jan'11 I thought it'd sold a little more but I'm probably wrong.
September 14, 201311 yr Artists who have had a #1 album and no other top 40 albums (thanks to Wikipedia): Freddy Cannon Blind Faith (band members had other success) Neil Reid (won Opportunity Knocks - the X-Factor of its day) Johnny Hates Jazz The Farm Chaka Demus & Pliers and then several X-Factor artists (Steve Brookstein, Journey South, Ray Quinn, Diana Vickers), and quite a few recent artists (Tinie Tempah, Nero, and Ed Sheeran being the only ones prior to 2012).
September 14, 201311 yr You can't call Tinie, Nero and Ed one-album wonders when they haven't released their 2nd album yet.
September 14, 201311 yr Are Cyndi Lauper & Alanis Morissette eligible for this list? I know they most likely charted high for at least one week with subsequent releases but generally they are viewed as only having one successful album...
September 14, 201311 yr and then several X-Factor artists (Steve Brookstein, Journey South, Ray Quinn, Diana Vickers) Give her a chance, the second album isn't upon us yet. :drama:
