Midweek Charts: Kings Of Leon and Drake neck and neck

Source: MW

by Paul Williams

Kings Of Leon are narrowly ahead of Drake as they look to score their fourth UK No.1 album with Mechanical Bull.

The Columbia-handled release has sold around 4,000 more copies in the week so far than Cash Money/Republic act Drake’s Nothing Was The Same, while they are joined by five more brand new albums in the Top 10, according to the Official Charts Company.

Kings Of Leon topped the UK artist albums chart in 2007 with Because Of The Times, the following year with Only By the Night and then did the same in 2010 with Come Around Sundown, which shifted 183,298 copies first week. However, the new album’s opening sales are likely to be a lot lower. Meanwhile, their single Supersoaker is up 68-36 on the midweeks.

Canadian Drake’s highest-charting album to date in the UK is Take Care, which reached No.5 in 2011, while the rapper is currently enjoying one of his most successful singles to date with Hold On We’re Going Home with Majid Jordan locked in the Top 10. It rises 7-4 in the latest midweeks.

Alongside Nothing Was The Same, Island Records has a second brand new album in the top three with Jessie J’s second Lava/Republic set Alive new at 3, while Warner Bros act Jason Derulo’s Tattoos arrives at 5 in the week to date as his Talk Dirty single with 2 Chainz looks to spend a second week at No.1. It debuted at the top last Sunday after selling 159,888 copies and has opened a lead of more than 7,000 units in the new chart week.

Virgin act Chvrches debut album The Bones Of What You Believe is new at 6, while Birdy’s second 14th Floor/Atlantic set Fire Within is new at 7. Her self-titled 2011 debut peaked at 13. US progressive metal band Dream Theater complete the Top 10 new entries with their eponymous set at No.9. Their best UK peak to date is No.11, achieved by their last album A Dramatic Turn Of Events in 2011.

The high number of new entries sweeps away most of what made up last Sunday’s Top 10 with Domino’s Arctic Monkeys leading the survivors. Their AM drops to 4 having secured a second week last weekend at No.1, while Avicii’s Positiva/PRMD debut True drops to 8 having debuted at No.2 last Sunday and London Grammar’s Metal & Dust Recordings set If You Wait falls 5-10.

There are more brand new albums outside the Top 10, led at 11 by the Cherrytree/Polydor-issued The Last Ship, Sting’s first new studio album of self-penned material since Sacred Love reached No.3 in 2003. Mazzy Star’s Seasons Of The Day, issued on their own Rhymes Of An Hour label and their first since 1996’s Among My Swan, is new at 17, while New Model Army could be heading for their highest-charting album in two decades with Between Dog And Wolf on the Attack Attack label currently showing up as a new entry at No.19.

Fellow veteran Roy Harper could also make a high splash with Man & Myth, his first for Bella Union, at No.24, while a Geffen/Polydor 20-year anniversary of Nirvana’s In Utero is new at 20.

The singles market is a lot quieter in terms of new releases with the two biggest arrivals at 12 and 14 respectively in the week to date. They are led by Turn It Around by Sub Focus with Kele on the EMI label, while Polydor’s Haim are two places lower with The Wire.

Below Jason Derulo, Katy Perry remains at No.2 in the week to date with the Virgin-issued Roar, although it is fewer than 2,000 sales ahead of Interscope/Polydor signings OneRepublic’s Counting Stars, which moves back up 4-3. While Drake is at 4, Avicii remains at No.5 with the Positiva/PRMD single You Make Me as its predecessor Wake Me Up slips 6-8.

Manchester’s Ben Pearce is heading for a first ever UK Top 10 hit with a 28% sales rise for the Mercury/Virgin EMI track What I Might Do lifting it 13-6, while Jessie J’s Lava/Republic single It’s My Party drops 3-7. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s Same Love on their own Macklemore label with Mary Lambert holds at 9 and Polydor act Ellie Goulding’s former No.1 Burn falls 8-10.

Demi Lovato’s Hollywood/Polydor single Skyscraper races 59-17 with weekly sales up 69% and there is a similar sales rise for Katy Perry’s new Virgin single Dark Horse (featuring Juicy J), although it drops 21-24. Capitol’s LA alternative rock duo Capital Cities’ Safe And Sound, which topped the German sales chart and was a Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hit in the US, is new at 28 in the week to date, while Justin Timberlake’s RCA single TKO vaults 89-31.

Kings of Leon and Jessie J seem to be fighting for the number one then I think Drake and Arctic Monkeys will be doing the same for the last position in the Top 3. I could see Drake being midweek #3 before being overtaken by AM come Sunday. Jason Derulo, Birdy and CHVCHES will probably all be Top 10 on the mids too, the latter could be at risk of just falling out officially though.

I can see this weeks album chart having another clear out, with the top 3 all new entries and a battle between Drake and Kings of Leon for number one with Jessie at 3 and hopefully a top 10 for CHVRCHES though that may be wishful thinking

Nothing exciting on the singles chart, just hoping Haim and Sub Focus go top 20 and a climb for Ben Pearce and Macklemore would be good!

Great week for albums again. Would be great to see Haim in top 10/15 which is very good for such a song.

Chvrches, Arctics, London Grammar, Haim... Good times!

Intrigued to see New Model Army higher in the midweeks than Mazzy Star and the In Utero reissue.

Bloody hell, I'm currently listening to the Jessie J album and I never thought I'd say this but... it's quite good :o
Kings of Leon or Jessie J for #1, I haven't the faintest idea who'll get it.

I don't think Ms J has a hope in hell of getting number one but I may be wrong. I just assume Kings of Leon will get it

Kings Of Leon are seriously gonna walk it by a mile. I'll eat my shoe if Jessie even comes close.

Not Birdy?
