November 24, 201312 yr I do love it being so close so I can't tell what's gonna happen, just a shame they're nowhere near either artists' best work :( I would like Bastille themselves to get number 1 but not with this, GAH, so hard to choose. Given how much I love the original Rhythm Of The Night helps me love Of The Night more I guess. It really is quite a polarising single though it seems.
November 24, 201312 yr I would like Bastille to be #1. Not because I prefer the song (I prefer Lily's cover but I do like the Bastille song as well), but because we need a good song to be the fastest selling #2 of the year. And I don't think Bastille are gonna sell as much as Lily did last week. Edited November 24, 201312 yr by Tommy G
November 24, 201312 yr Today's random retro dates back to 1982, the first appearance in the Top 10 of one of the worst records ever to chart. Week Ending : 27/11/1982 1 (1) Eddy Grant - I Don't Wanna Dance 2 (9) Human League - Mirror Man 3 (2) Dionne Warwick - Heartbreaker 4 (10) Wham! - Young Guns (Go For It) 5 (4) Marvin Gaye - (Sexual) Healing 6 (3) Tears For Fears - Mad World 7 (12) Blancmange - Living On The Ceiling 8 (5) Clannad - Theme From Harry's Game 9 (24) Renee & Renato - Save Your Love 10 (6) Daryl Hall & John Oates - Maneater Starting off at Number One, Eddy Grant had been around since the late 60s (having a number one with The Equals in '68), providing the commercial side of Reggae to the public. This was his only solo chart topper, but surprisingly wasn't one of two songs he had remixed and that reappeared in the charts in 2001. Right behind Eddy we had the Human League. "Mirror Man" was their first single of the post-Dare era, and leaping 9-2 it was expected to move up one more notch next week but it wasn't to be and "Don't You Want Me" remained their only Number One Dionne Warwick hadn't had a solo hit since 1968, so was perhaps a surprise top tenner with "Heartbreaker" but one listen to it will indicate it is almost a Bee Gees song with a featured vocalist. In contrast to the veterans above, we have a new act at number 4 - yes this is Wham!'s first hit and the first emergence on to the world wide stage of George Michael (and the other one I suppose). It wasn't their first single (Wham Rap had been a flop in the summer and needed a re-release on the back of Young Guns) Back to the veterans at 5, and a Motown Legend (although this wasn't actually on Motown) Marvin Gaye. (Sexual) Healing was his last big hit, winning Grammy award for best Male R&B Performance. Within 18 months, Gaye was dead, shot by his own father. He has since been given numerous posthumous awards and honours. At six, the original version of "Mad World" (and despite the Michael Andrews/Gary Jules version being a decent effort) still the best. The song, the duo's debut hit. was fifth in John Peel's Festive Fifty for 1982. Another duo at seven, Blancmange's highest peaking single "Living On The Ceiling". Later on in their career, they were one of a very few acts to succesfully cover an Abba soing ("The Day Before You Came"). Vocalist Neil Arthur had onevery minor solo hit to go alongsde the duo's ten. Clannad were one of those bands that everybody now seems to recognise as exvellent, but struggled to get much success when they were together, the "Theme From Harry's Game" being their only top ten single. "Harry's Game" was an ITV mini-series about an attempt to infiltrate a British soldier into the IRA. One of Clannad's former members, Enya, had a solo number one in 1988. Then we come to number 9. I'd pass over it completely, but after what I said in the intro I'd better not. "Save Your Love" turned out to be the surprise hit of the season. An operatic style Italian male vocal paired with an off-key female vocal, and a Romeo And Juliet style video (the original Renee had already packed up and moved on) saw this pile of dirge rise to become a number one. If you don't know of it, I urge you not to go to Youtube and dig it out. It's three minutes of your life you will never get back. Finally at ten, we have a typical example of a Hall & Oates song (and of course the fifth duo in the top ten) Always more successful in the US than here, tjhey did knock over a dozen charting singles, but only this and "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" made the Top Ten.

November 24, 201312 yr Hi everyone, I will join the chart show thread only later, but: Today's chart presenter on Radio 1: Jameela Jamil 7 entries
November 24, 201312 yr Was that 15 copies on Wednesday or Friday? :o Wednesday :) So close! Edited November 24, 201312 yr by Jade
November 24, 201312 yr I'm really not a Bastille fan but this is probably my favourite from them so far. In an ideal chart, I'd like Lily to be #1 this week with her cover and I hope for Gary to be #3 or lower.
November 24, 201312 yr 40 (from 56) Lana Del Rey vs. Cedric Gervais - Summertime Sadness (Cedric Gervais Remix) [D] http://a1.mzstatic.com/us/r2000/015/Features/v4/ae/60/1a/ae601ad1-962e-afd9-3393-ebf77e3336d8/dj.ropryayj.170x170-75.jpg Chart Run: 32-4-4-4-5-4-5-7-12-12-15-19-27-39-39-47-56-40 [18 wks] Release date: 24-07-2013 Format: download only single Label: Polydor Sales: 300k+ Video here: akhmS1D2Ce4 Biography Vocalist Lana Del Rey makes atmospheric, orchestral, retro-'60s-sounding pop that showcases her torchy image and sensuous singing style. A native of Lake Placid, New York, Del Rey released the single "Kill Kill" under her given name, Lizzy Grant, in 2009 before remaking herself into the pop femme fatale character Lana Del Rey. A video for the single "Video Games" appeared online in August of 2011 and drew considerable buzz, as did a secret show she performed at Brooklyn's Grasslands Gallery that September. Del Rey's EP, featuring the songs "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans," was released in fall 2011. Amidst a heavy dose of hype, her debut album Born to Die was announced by Interscope for release early the following year. Del Rey cemented the anticipation around the album with an appearance on Saturday Night Live, becoming the first artist since Natalie Imbruglia in 1998 to perform on the show before the release of her debut album. Born to Die hit number one in several European countries, reached number two on the U.S. charts, and eventually sold several million copies worldwide. By the end of 2012, Del Rey had released her next work, a mini-album titled Paradise, with a trailer single called "Ride." - iTunes Chart history (Year peak title): Lana Del Rey 2011 09 Video Games -1- 2012 09 Born To Die -2- 2012 32 Blue Jeans -3- 2012 60 Blue Velvet -PS- 2012 32 Ride -4- 2013 23 Young And Beautiful -OST- 2013 04 Summertime Sadness (Lana Del Rey vs. Cedric Gervais) -5- Cedric Gervais 2012 26 Molly -NAS- 2013 04 Summertime Sadness (Lana Del Rey vs. Cedric Gervais)
November 24, 201312 yr The NOW effect is probably helping this song re-enter more than the Miley performance, surely?
November 24, 201312 yr SO glad to see this back! Amazing track, definitely one of my favourites of the year! Miley's cover was also great.
November 24, 201312 yr 40 - Summertime Sadness (post to follow) That's two of us not prepared for this to re-enter
