Biography

Boyzone was Europe's most successful boy bands during the second half of the 1990s. Comprised of five Irish vocalists and funded by music manager Louis Walsh, the group embraced a similar style of pop music as Take That, whose breakup in 1996 created a void that Boyzone happily filled. By combining boyish charm with slick songwriting (much of which was co-written by the bandmates themselves), the singers found enormous success throughout the U.K., where 16 of their first 17 singles became Top Five hits. Six of those songs made it to number one, establishing Boyzone as the first Irish group to top the British charts so regularly, and bandmate Stephen Gately garnered additional headlines in 1999 by announcing his homosexuality, making Boyzone one of the only boy bands to include an openly gay member. The group didn't fare nearly as well in America, where acts like *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys reigned supreme, but Boyzone's success in Europe was nearly unparalleled during the group's heyday.

 

Boyzone was founded in 1993 by Louis Walsh, an aspiring music mogul who — like Maurice Starr and Lou Pearlman — formed, funded, and managed the group from day one. Over 300 vocalists auditioned for Walsh's project, including future actor Colin Farrell, but the competition was ultimately narrowed down to five males: Mikey Graham, Stephen Gately, Shane Lynch, Keith Duffy, and lead vocalist Ronan Keating. The quintet initially honed its sound by performing covers of '70s pop tunes, including Detroit Spinners' "Working My Way Back to You," which became a number three hit on the Irish charts, and the Osmonds' "Love Me for a Reason," Boyzone's first single to chart in the U.K. When it came time to write original material, however, the group hired Ray Hedges of Take That to lend his songwriting assistance.

 

With Hedges' help, Boyzone filled their debut effort, Said and Done, with five high-charting singles. Released in 1995, the album eventually went triple-platinum in the U.K. and paved the way for A Different Beast, which arrived in 1998 and spawned three additional singles (including a pair of number one hits). Similar groups were concurrently reigning the airwaves in America, but Boyzone rarely concentrated their efforts overseas, focusing instead on the fan bases that had sprung up in Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Austria, and other European countries. By the time Where We Belong arrived in 1998, the boys had become certifiable superstars at home, selling more than three million copies of their new album in the U.K. and sending Where We Belong to the top of the charts in five countries.

 

As the decade drew to a close, Boyzone released a popular greatest-hits album, By Request, and continued touring the continent. Meanwhile, Ronan Keating jumpstarted his solo career by releasing "When You Say Nothing at All" in June 1999, the same month that Stephen Gately announced he was gay. Attention continued to swirl around the band, but Boyzone nevertheless called it quits after a final performance in January 2000, citing intra-band tension as the reason for the split. Both Keating and Gately gained additional recognition as solo artists during the following years, while Duffy pursued an acting career.

 

In light of Take That's successful reunion in 2006, Boyzone re-formed two years later. A 29-city tour proved to be fairly lucrative, as did the release of Back Again...No Matter What, a compilation album that scored another Top Five hit with the new song "Love You Anyway." Additional new material was recorded for a proper studio album, but Stephen Gately died before the album's release, passing away in October 2009 due to an acute pulmonary edema. Carrying on as a four-piece, the band dedicated their 2010 release Brother to Gately and subsequently toured the U.K. and Ireland. This new Boyzone song sounds very The Wanted. If they sang it I'm sure it would be a flash in the pan top 10, not a fan of this.

I've never been bothered about their music. This track is alright.

Oh I didn't expect this to hold on. Boyzone can be OK on occasion, but this is really terrible.

Jameela seems to think that Radio 1 is the reason why every song is re-entering this week.

 

This is my favourite of the recent Eminem singles, but that's not saying too much.

She's trying very hard to make this Eminem re-entry sound interesting. But not succeeding.

Wish this'd been Rap God, Berzerk is probably my least favourite out of the four that were released.

I honestly only really like 'Picture Of You' by them, pretty terrible act.

Not a fan of this Eminem track. From the songs I've heard from his new album, this is my least favorite.

Biography

Keane's piano-driven pop/rock is created by vocalist Tom Chaplin, drummer Richard Hughes, and pianist Tim Rice-Oxley, three childhood friends from the small town of Battle in East Sussex, England. Formed in 1997, the group started out as a college-aged cover band. Guitarist Dominic Scott was also part of this early incarnation, having previously played cover songs with Hughes and Rice-Oxley in a band named the Lotus Eaters. Keane toured the East Sussex circuit for several years while internalizing the epic sounds of their set list, which included songs by Oasis, U2, and the Beatles. The quartet began performing original material in 1998, although Chaplin left for Edinburgh University shortly thereafter to study art history. The move proved to be brief, as he returned to London in 1999 and doubled his efforts with Keane.

 

Buoyed by Chaplin's tenor vocals and Rice-Oxley's inventive keyboard effects, the group made its studio debut in 2000 with a self-released single, "Call Me What You Like." Wolf at the Door followed one year later, but the band still struggled to find its momentum as Scott left the lineup in July, leaving the band without a guitarist. Keane continued performing as a trio and happened upon their big break in December 2002, when Fierce Panda Records representative Simon Williams (who had helped discover Coldplay several years prior) was summoned by a friend to attend a Keane gig in London. Williams was impressed with the band's performance and offered to issue Keane's next single, Everybody's Changing, on the spot. The limited-edition release became a success on U.K. radio and attracted attention from major record labels, several of whom began to swarm around the group.

 

Keane signed with Island Records in 2003 and released This Is the Last Time, the band's final single for the Fierce Panda label, before the year was up. They made their major-label debut one year later with Hopes and Fears, which hit the top of the U.K. album charts during its first week of release and beat out Morrissey's You Are the Quarry. The ballad "Somewhere Only We Know" became a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and Keane received two Brit Awards (for Best Breakthrough Act and Best Album 2005) while earning a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. The album went on to become the second highest-selling record of the year in the U.K., barely losing out to the Scissor Sisters' debut.

 

Keane opened several shows during U2's 2005 tour in support of their debut, which was followed several months later by the Live Recordings 2004 EP. When it came time to return to the recording studio, the band once again enlisted producer Andy Green and fashioned a darker album titled Under the Iron Sea. Arriving in 2006, it debuted at number four on the Billboard Top 200, topped the U.K. charts, and spun off the band's most successful single to date with Is It Any Wonder? Keane chose to pursue a different agenda for their next project, however, returning in 2008 with a slightly retooled sound — including the presence of electric guitar — and a new album, Perfect Symmetry. Two years later, they changed directions yet again with the release of Night Train, an eight-song EP featuring collaborations with the Somali rapper K'NAAN. Released in 2012, Strangeland, the full-length follow-up to Perfect Symmetry, married that album’s use of guitars and über-pop sensibility with the anthemic, piano-led sound prevalent on the band’s first two albums, particularly Under the Iron Sea. - iTunes
