Yeah if they're going for Christmas #1 (which I assume they are) it definitely would have made more sense to release it a bit closer to Christmas. I think it will be #1 for a couple of weeks, hang around the Top 10 for another couple of weeks, and then climb back into the Top 5 or Top 3 on Christmas week.

Well I think it'll be No.1 until January and keep XF off too.

I know they've chosen a load of popular current artists to raise the most money, but looking at that list I can't help thinking this is going to be awful. Guess we'll find out soon enough though...

It shouldn't be about current artists. But I suppose they don't think I'll sell otherwise.

How much do we reckon this will sell in the first and second week? Similar to the last record?

The last 3 were all about the 'current big artists' and the popular sound at the time so it makes sense to follow this. I am just curious how they are going to make Do They Know It's Christmas sound like a 2014 single (expecting an Avicii rave breakdown to replace the chorus now).

(I hope the song starts with 'IT'S FUUUUUUUUSE')

What's the point in updating it if it's not focused on current artists? Surely the whole point of the remakes is to continue the message/spirit to a new generation of musicians?

I think it will underperform. So many charity records lately seem to?

Watch it sell a million now and show me up!

You may be right, charity singles just don't seem to shift downloads. Even Military Wives largely sold physically didn't it?

I have no idea how big a CD seller this is likely to be, but I'm guessing not as big as Bob Geldof might expect, times really have changed and good cause or not, when people are so used to spending 99p on a download or streaming, I doubt many people will be happy to shell out £3.99 for a CD single in this day and age.

What's with everyone saying it's "too early" to be released? :/ I think it's the perfect timing and it annoys me that it would only be used for that one or two weeks i the run up to christmas. At least it'll get good use out of the song being played on radio for this christmas and tbh, it'll be nice to FINALLY (well, hopefully) have a genuine christmas song challenge the XF winner for a change as opposed to these crappy, non relevant facebook campaign songs.

I question updating it at all. At the very least they should be trying out a new song. Last time they updated it with the current artists it was almost universally panned but at least the artists had something about them. This list looks horrifically bland.

The point is to drum up publicity-for charity or the artists involved. Call me cynical, but last time it felt like some artists were more interested in being seen then actually helping. Joss Stone not knowing who Bob 'Gandalf' is was a particular lowlight and seeing the list of names involved I can't see it coming across much better this time.

I assume the proceeds of the original still go to charity? So one could buy that. Or SHOCK HORROR donate of your own free will without having to get a crap cover version in return.

That is not what I mean. Cowell wants the Christmas #1 for X Factor, has he leveraged availability of 1D? Has he said that 1D can do it but only if its brought out early freeing up the Christmas #1 for the X Factor winner

Funny listening to Bob though, he's so out of touch. He thinks you can get a number 1 on 20,000 sales. Not in the singles chart in Q4 Bob.

I don't think Simon Cowell has that much influence, and from my knowledge he's very charitable. I'm old enough to remember Band Aid 20 being released, and he postponed the release of the winners single so not to interfere with Band Aid 20. This time with it being released earlier who knows. What I do know is that Syco will not want a repeat performance of 2009

I just started maniacally laughing in front of my family

I still think the 17th is a week early - will radio play a Xmas song next Monday?

I just checked iTunes and it says the 2004 version was released on 18th Nov 2004 so maybe not. I remember back then radio 1 didn't have a track of the day but it was played on every show that day on radio 1(which was strange back then for a non playlisted song). Then it was added to the A list straight away(which wasnt actually that unheard of at the time With artists like Madonna/Eminem having that privilege with brand new tracks!

Actually the official release date for Band Aid 20 was 29th November 2004.
^^ I thought that might have been inaccurate - I was sure it was more around the date you are quoting!

I think the 18th is probably when it premiered. Last time some stations banned it for being awful.

I assume that more of the line up is still to come, as that doesn't feel anywhere near as long as the previous line ups. No big surprises on the line up, didn't see Sinead O' Connor & Underworld coming, if the latter are involved in production like they were for the 2012 Olympics songs, it should sound amazing!

It will be interesting to see how well it does, it obviously sounds like a number 1 even without hearing it but all these charity songs haven't really adapted well to the new download climate - although this one is a bit of a 'one off' and does have a lot of current artists so that should help it in theory. 17th feels a little early for a Christmas song, may have quite a strange chart run if it doesn't get to number 1.

I'm so glad there's another Band Aid version that's happening anyway, I was just starting Secondary school when the last version came out :o
