They just need a more relevant winner (although I expect Impossible was the last mega winner's single that the competition will ever produce). I love Sam but she's about as much of a singles artist as Steve Brookstein was. This isn't an age thing (Pharrell is 4 years older than her!), more the type of music that she sings. Most of her voters will have probably been older women saying 'ooh how lovely' when she performed but having no intention of actually buying any of her music.

I wonder how Nicholas would have fared if the votes swung the other way and the age gap would be half her age.

I'm pretty sure 'Drunk In Love' is only that high due to it being a big name collaboration...

I've seen the video several times on TV so I think it's more like that rather than the collaboration. Jay-Z is a big name but I think most people expect only a short verse when he features on a track.

It's probably a combination of lots of things. I've heard it on the radio (not on any big stations though), also its got its music video uploaded to Youtube and the TV airplay and some Jay-Z fans getting it. I think it will start dropping fast by next week though.

I'm not sure he would have done much better. His song was weak as hell and despite being half her age, he's no more relevant than she is. Luke Friend would have had a 200k+ seller had he won, he'll almost certainly get some hit singles in the near future.

I doubt Luke will have a big hit at all. Despite the show trying to promote him as some commercially viable artist, I just can't see it. The only three contestants from this year's series I can see having any real chart success are Hannah, Tamera and Rough Copy. Although I've read that Tamera is going to take a few years out to perfect herself and by that time I doubt anyone would care. I really hope Rough Copy get signed to a great record label. They have the most potential from the class of '13.

Not even looning here but Luke definitely has the best chance of commercial success. Rough Copy might have one successful single or something but they're hardly gonna be the next JLS, and I can't see Hannah being a big selling artist as much as I'd like her to be. Tamera could if she does take a few years out like you said. Luke exceeded expectations and made the final, and he has more star appeal than anyone else in the final 12 IMO. He'll at least be a big album selling act (more in a Mumford & Sons kinda way than Richard & Adam, if you get what I mean) if handled right and will probably have a few hit singles too.

I agree, I think Luke has the best chance of commercial success - if he releases the right songs. Agreed that Rough Copy probably won't be the next JLS but they should at least last beyond one successful single, probably one successful album and then one lesser one before being dropped. Hannah might have Misha B level of success i.e. a couple of hits. Tamera will be forgotten about if she takes a couple of years out. And I can't see Nicholas having much success at all really.

What was Nicholas' song?

Yeah Luke definitely has the potential to be big but it very much depends on the song(s). If they get that wrong he could just do a Frankie Cocozza.

He delivered a completely unmemorable cover of Superman (It's Not Easy) by Five For Fighting.

I still see Luke having a few hits, or at least one big hit. Rough Copy might be about as big as Union J and I can't see Hannah getting any success at all. Tamera would probably have been better off launching her career in a few years without ever going on X Factor. I'm still waiting for Ella Henderson to release a single, she was the last 'next big thing'!

They were both pretty bland but I preferred Nicholas' 'Superman (It's Not Easy)' to Sam's 'Skyscraper'.
ROFL at pharrell going back to number 1... Sam bailey to miss out would be hilarious.
Hate to be a humbug but I really want Skyscraper to fall fast. Boring version and hopefully means Sam can get cracking with her album (not to be some covers album for mothers day though). Luke has a much better chance of doing well along with tamera but she needs to release music once she's taken some time to develop her niche in the music industry. So a year or two break roughly.

I think one of the problems is that Skyscraper already had a boost into the Top 10 earlier this year and the same thing happened with Cannonball in Little Mix's year. All the other years, as far as I'm aware, hadn't had the same level of exposure for the original song before the winner's single had been released.

Simon said he doesn't want her to churn something like that out, and he wants her to have a say in what happens, so that hopefully eliminates a Jahméne Douglas type album.

Both The Climb and Many Of Horror were released the same years as their covers. Although neither had recently rebounded into the top 10 before the cover was released

I may be wrong but wasn't 'Hallelujah' also used earlier in the series? And that did the best of the 'original versions of winner's singles' (well, not quite an original version but you know what I mean). Plus the original of 'Impossible' did worse than 'Cannonball'.

Diana Vickers did "Hallelujah" I believe, and a damn sight better and with tons more emotion than Alexandra Burke eventually did.
