My favourite bit of the Oborne article is that last, more general bit.

Others take the view that all politicians lie, and just shrug their shoulders. But it’s not true that all politicians lie. Treating all politicians as liars gives a licence for the total collapse of integrity of British politics, a collapse that habitual liars such as Johnson are delighted to exploit. The British media is not holding him to account for his repeated falsehoods. It’s time we journalists did our job, and started to regain our self-respect.

Β

Absolutely right. 'All politicians lie' is a sweeping statement with no basis in reality, and sticking to it makes real liars like this all the more dangerous.

I’ve been saying that for years. Some people choose to take the more sweeping view.

A few of us here have highlighted that last bit over the past few years, seeing as Vidcapper highlighted it by repeating that right wing point all the time. They have destroyed trust by lying constantly. The thing is, this distrust that extends to ALL politicians. Then, no one believes anything and the right wing can lie and lie, following Goebbel's tactics, and not even be challenged on the lies. In fact they lie so much, that by the time one lie is debunked, they've said 10 more. This is destroying democract. Meanwhile, Vidcapper just shrugs and repeats that right wing lie!
Rumour has it we have our own email scandal going on with Aaron Banks?? Not sure how true that is.

Ian Hislop's recent documentary on fake news included an example of where this can lead.

In the first World War, a story started to circulate about how the Germans were using cadavers to make glue. The story made it into the press with the clear implication that the cadavers were human. After the war, it became apparent that they were using animal corpses. The government knew this all along, as did the press, but they colluded to spread the false version to boost support for the war. When people realised they had been misled, they started to be more cautious about believing everything they read in the papers.

Β

A little over twenty years later, we were at war with Germany again. Reports started to reach this country about Jews and others being murdered in huge numbers in concentration camps. The press duly reported the stories but many people, remembering the WWI story, dismissed them as propaganda.

The Daily Mirror are claiming that their reporters have been banned from travelling on Johnson's campaign bus. In a sane world, all other papers would withdraw their reporters in protest.

Home Secretary Priti Patel has said during a visit yesterday to Barrow, where Labour are defending a 209 majority, that the Government is not responsible for poverty. Underneath is this Tweet.

"She’s right - lost count the number of times my husband visited homes to install broadband for huge 56” TVs on wall & the rest of the house & family looked like war on want. It’s some people’s idea of priorities"

I've always said that the reason a lot of people can't manage on the incomes they're on, whether benefits or low wages, is because they don't know how to prioritise. If you're on a low income you don't need Sky TV or a car or to go out for meals regularly or buy take-aways. We're not on a huge income between us but we know how to budget. Maybe there should be some free council run classes.

No gov't, of whatever colour, should be blamed for some people's poor ability to prioritize.

Β

If you don't want your children to go short *don't blow your dole money on cigs/drink/drugs*. Giving such financially incompetent people more money, as Labour aspires to do, will just result in even higher levels of frittering away. Only if you *earn* your money do you learn the value of it.

BBC deleted the interview in Barrow. I wonder why. Luckily, it's been uploaded elsewhere.

Β

So, the government isn't to blame for growing poverty because it's the fault of local councils β€” whose funding the government cut?

Growing poverty has nothing to do with austerity over the past decade. Or the bedroom tax. Or universal credit. Sanctions. Benefit cuts. Every public resource underfunded. I could go on. It's all on the people that don't 'prioritise' their pennies, apparently. Finally, an explanation for the 250% increase in homelessness since 2010. Unbelievable.

It's not so much who cut public spending, but *why* was it done...

So, not because the economy was f*cked at the time Tories took over, then...

Β

Not at all. Austerity is an economic myth and a way for the rich to smash and grab wealth, as all statistics have since confirmed x Gideon Osborne even admitted it wasn't necessary. The UN criticised them massively for it.
