Really can't say I expected Passenger to even be challenging for the #1 album, especially after that reminder of 'Whispers II' not even shifting 5 figures in its first week which this new album has done already! Thought it'd be a pretty easy #1 for Bruce Springsteen but at the moment I wouldn't call it between any of that top 3. Exciting ~ nice to see a vaguely unpredictable race for #1 on the singles chart for once as well.

Although of course the main chart story of the week...

THE RETURN OF ALBUM CHART SAVIOUR SIR BONAMASSA IN THE MIDWEEK TOP 10!

I was thinking just last week it had felt like a while since the last time Joe Bonamassa graced the album chart! My Bonamassa senses were tingling *.*

James Arthur, so impressive!

Shows how a good song will ALWAYS do well, no matter how much people think an artist is over.

Good song?? Where?

That is an incredibly blinkered way of looking at it.

Tis a pity about the large number of 'good songs' that haven't gone anywhere near to doing well then...

Okay well fair enough, his name gave it the platform to launch off, I don't mean that every good song ever will shoot to #1.

But what I mean is that.. even though nobody I know really cares about or likes James, the reception to the song itself has been incredible.

I think the battle is between Bruce and Passenger and Shawn will be number 3 as a lot of his fans would be more the style to purchase instantly.
I agree somewhat, but I also think Shawn will get more casual buys than Bruce or Passenger, plus he'll have a streaming advantage over them so the #1 could certainly go in his favor.

Yeah I got what you meant! Basically with somebody like James Arthur, his comeback single by rights should have bombed, but the fact that it's (arguably) a decent song has turned that around and made it a hit. I'm all for shock Numbers 1s anyway so I'm happy :)

He actually had a #3 album this April but, I've got to admit, it completely passed me by as well!

Shawn Mendes had tweeted earlier in the week that if his fans streamed his Album "Illuminate" on Spotify you would automatically be entered into a competition with a chance to meet him.

The reality is this is only eligible for US based entrants but this was not really made clear in the tweet.

Seems a bit of an underhand tactic to inflate streams in the week of Release, this tactic would surely not be allowed for UK chart?

oh my, and how does he know if you've streamed it? (just did incidentally) :)

sounds a bit desperate

It's not underhand, it's called promotion  He's so close to #1 so who could blame him? Rick Astley's tactics were even more ""desperate"" earlier in the year :P

Yes, who can forget Rick twerking with "Loose Women".

Both in category of "Whatever it takes"...

^^ There's lots of that kind of promo going on, Sam Bailey was calling/face timing fans last week that proved they bought her album on Thursday which I assume was her attempt to stay Top 40. Looking at the tweets many fans bought a 2nd copy in order to get a call.

That really is a new level of desperation

At least Shawn didn't go to Westfield Shopping Centre and give a pair of Nike trainers to anyone that bought his song
