Posted October 7, 20177 yr MkElfR_NPBI After the solid and successful but somewhat declining era of Salute Little Mix had to do something big because historically, once an album's success declines, the next album's sales decline even more. Not only did Black Magic save them from a decline, but it pushed them to into an imperial phase that they're still living in and had the public eating out of their hands. Radio plays them without hesitation and they're national treasures. So looking back, what are your memories of Black Magic? Do you remember your initial reaction? Has it changed?
October 7, 20177 yr Author For me, the decision to (possibly) go back to the cheesy pop stuff would be one of the strangest career moves ever. It leaked: Genuinely already my favourite Little Mix single. I am in love with this! :wub: Agree with the above, probably my favourite single already. :kink: Black Magic >>>> Wings > Move Sonically, it's not what I wanted from them. I wanted them to improve on their 'Salute' sound and stick with that. However, as a pop song, it's SO GOOD. Really loving it. :wub: Yeh, disapointing really, I was hoping they would continue the 'Salute' sound but I guess Fifth Harmony have taken over their R&B sound in Simon Cowell's eyes. It lacks identity for me, it could be sung by anyone. :( Parts of it I love, but others, I feel a bit "eh". Not bad though, more of the chanty bits woulda been nice. Slain omg this is SO good. Seriously. Very underwhelming after the bops Salute produced... This is so cheesy and absolutely NOT the kind of music that they should be making four years into their career but I can't help but love it 😬 Hopefully the album is made of stronger material but I'll take this for now as they've not released anything for 15(?) months. The verses are ok, but the chorus too cheesy. It sounds like a album track I'd rather avoid. Not a fan.

I don't think it's actually a regression as such, it feels very 80s which I wouldn't say the first album sounded like, it's just a different variation of pop. It's kinda going along a Carly Rae Jepsen kinda line and I'm really loving it, undeniably so catchy. I can see the Disco Love comparison actually, but I do prefer it to that. OH THANK GOD I can finally hop back on board the Little Mix train after being resolutely nonplussed by basically the entirety of 'Salute'. HUGE chorus, overwhelming sense of joy and just generally a super catchy, fun pop song. This is awesome, so much more instant than 'Move'. The intro is incredible. I am so unbelievably hyped for the video now. :wub: This is really good and not as cheesy as some of you are making out. Still packs some punch especially in the verses and the chorus is SO catchy. I can't really take the single cover seriously though. Jesy looks GONE with that smile & hairline so far back :S This is amazing! Completely sold on first listen. Yeah I'd love another Move but this is still amazing and very instant. I hope it can be a big hit for them. I really like this! :wub: Love the 80s vibe. I wouldn't say it's a regression, but maybe a diversion... we'll have to wait and see re: their third album sound and find out if they've stepped away from the r'n'b present on Salute, or not.

It's nothing special and their fanbase alone will get it tip 10 but it's such a step down from previous material, low sales should help it get top 5 but it will drop 'faster than the speed of light' crazy how i miss you, i'm hurting deep inside . Lovely little pop song, but it does feel like a step backwards after the last album, and that this will be the beginning of their decline. Perhaps. Pure pop could always use another flagbearer, but I doubt it'll be this for very long. I'm not getting very excited about this while I was after Move hit me. Finally listened to this in full, it is a fantastic pop song. I still stick by my initial opinion that it seems they've got back to a more 'DNA' type sound, but with a bit of a twist but that's no problem when the song is as good as this. However, it doesn't scream #1 hit to me but top 5 should be certain considering they've already got Capital on board for the radio premiere tomorrow. The pre-order for this is doing astonishingly well considering it's not out for ages. The initial fan-buys will have died down now, so it looks like the little airplay it's getting is actually generating proper interest. I don't want to jinx it, but #159 5/6 weeks before release would usually say number 1 to me. It's doing incredibly well, I'm so shocked! Usually pre-orders with fanbases have quite a 'Pretty Girls' run, go top 40 and then slump back to about #500/600 until closer to the release date. That's what I expected, but instead it's sitting at #132 now with so many weeks to go and it's reminding me more of how 'I Will Never Let You Down' did on pre-orders. I hadn't really thought they were capable of getting another #1 until now where I'm starting to think MAYBE just maybe it could happen. I won't get my hopes up too much but this is very promising. what a shocking disappointment and a total bump in the road for their career. it really will be a flash in the fanbase pan sort of hit...

October 7, 20177 yr 'Black Magic' is my least favourite Little Mix single (I just find it so bland and pandering to the kind of basic pop that Capital were churning out at the time) but I do really appreciate that it catapulted them into a whole new level of stardom, 'cause I do love the girls <3

October 7, 20177 yr The video definitely helps - the videos prior to this were sort of just them not doing a lot but the GW vids were top notch, especially Black Magic.
October 7, 20177 yr Not my favourite as it's so 'basic pure pop' and we've already seen Little Mix do more exciting things with their music - I appreciate it's very good at what it does and panders perfectly to appealing to as much of the public as possible but it never quite hit the target for me.

I get the criticisms of it being "basic" and whatever else, but it's just too irresistible to anyone who's a fan of pop imo. Such an important song in their career. It really elevated them from Stars to Superstars. :wub:
October 9, 20177 yr Black Magic was a lot of things - one of the first #1s when the chart moved to Fridays, one of the last held-back releases to be #1 (in fact the last held-back song to be #1 for more than a week), and of course SUCH a milestone for their career, exceeding most people's expectations based on the comments above and connecting so well with the general public. I have a similar opinion that it's quite basic and not as groundbreaking as their stuff on Salute, but still a totally solid song and I appreciate it even more for the context of being a 'turning point' for Little Mix and all the other great songs that came after this!

October 9, 20177 yr I liked it a lot at the time, then preferred 'Love Me Like You' but this has been such an integral part of so many great nights out since then that it's worked its way to classic status for me. Such a pop anthem! It is absolutely a song about date rape though.

October 10, 20177 yr Ah, I'm pleased I loved it from the outset. It's not quite as infectious as it once was for me, and I'd probably rate it in the bottom half of their singles discography now, but it's still a banger. The build-up to its release was so exciting, especially when it became apparent that it was going to be huge!
